Key claims

Civility and rapport enable psychological safety, allowing people to share outrageous ideas and speak candidly. Kind “straight talkers” who challenge ideas are essential for learning, creativity, and innovation. In polarized times, tolerance for conflict drops, so companies must create conditions for critical thinking “relatively safely.” Conflict is a driver of change; aim for an optimal balance between challenge and baseline rapport, varying by industry and company.

1:12So it's helpful to have candor. It's helpful to have people that are kind of straight talkers sometimes that will challenge your ideas. It's essential, right, for us to be able to learn and be more creative and innovative. But in times like this where our broader cultural ethos is so polarized and oftentimes so triggering, people have less tolerance for that. So I think it depends on the company. But if you really want people who can think critically and challenge each other, you need to create the conditions where they can do that relatively safely. Right. And that doesn't mean no conflict. I'm a big fan of conflict.

1:54Let me put it that way, right? It is a driver of change. So you want to have some kind of optimal balance of both, of sort of people that take on issues, challenge ideas, but you also want to have a baseline of a rapport.
