For a recent HBR article, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the football legend as he reflected on his career. When we talk about success, we often focus on individual achievements. But true leaders know that nothing significant is ever achieved alone. It's all about the team. Tom and I identified seven key behaviors for great team leadership.

1:14First, put the team first. Even when facing personal setbacks, always prioritize the team's success. Two, appreciate the unsung heroes. recognize and value those who work behind the scenes. Three, you set the standard. Create a culture where everyone gives 100 % effort. Four, understand individual motivations. Know what drives each team member and use that to inspire them. Five, complement the former leader. Balance your own leadership style with that of your coach or manager. Collaborate with other teammates who can also play complementary leadership roles. Six, counteract selfish behavior. Be aware of the external pressures that can lead to self-centered actions and always reinforce the team-first mentality.

2:02Seven, connect outside the office. Build relationships and trust through shared experiences beyond work. Leadership is about caring deeply for your teammates and the collective goal of winning. It's about trust, passion, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to give their best. Still waiting in line? Again? That's time you'll never get back.
