In short

“Ways to Build Routine Courage” argues that leaders face backlash and risk even for routine decisions, and that “everyday courage” is a muscle built through small, non-headline actions. It presents a six-part playbook: Moral (choose principles over profit), Social (speak up and name risks), Emotion (stay present and lead with honesty), Intellectual (challenge assumptions and invite others to test ideas), Create (offer bold ideas via low-stakes experiments and “smart failures”), and Physical (show up in tough conditions by practicing presence with frontline teams).

Key claims

courage is dominant, not one-off bravery; expertise helps map strategy amid uncertainty.

Notable examples

hiring/budgeting/speaking up causing public backlash; meetings where silence feels safer; “proven wrong” celebrated; lowering stakes for experiments.

0:28Alex Budak:Chevy is called the heartbeat of America for a reason. With SUVs made to move with your rhythm. The versatile Equinox tackles your entire day. The spacious Traverse fits your crew and your whole weekend. And Trax brings style with value you can count on. All infused with tech that has your back. So your drive always hits the right chord. Chevrolet. Together let's drive. Imagine making a business decision. Maybe it's hiring, maybe it's budgeting, maybe it's speaking up on a social issue. Any one of those choices could start a public backlash, put strain on your team, or even shake investment confidence.

1:08That's the reality for leaders today. Economic shocks, political uncertainty, polarization have created an environment where even routine decisions can carry real risk. In today's climate, expertise can help you map a strategy. When the road ahead is unclear, the state's personal, the fault is public, and your people are looking to you for guides. Courage is what will carry you through. To be clear, I'm not talking about bravery, that one-off heroic act. Courage is dominant. It's like a muscle you build by acting on your values, even when there's doubt, risk, or fear. I call this everyday courage.

1:40And it's most powerful in the small moments that won't make headlines, but still shake your organization's culture, your team's trust, and your legacy. Drawing on research and my work with senior leaders, I've created a playbook with six types of everyday courage. Moral. Choosing principles over profit. Build it by clarifying their values early and committing to them before a crisis puts them to the test. Social. Speeding up what others say sound. Build it in meetings where silence feels safer by naming the risk, voicing your perspective clearly, and rewarding dissent on your team. Emotion. Staying present with our feelings, your own and your team's.

2:15Build it during challenges by naming your emotions and leading with honesty, instead brushing past the scum for it. Intellectual. Questioning your own assumptions. Build it by regularly inviting others to challenge your thinking and celebrate your proven wrong. Create. Putting bold and tested ideas on the table. Build it by lowering the stakes, running small disturbance, and normalizing smart failures along the way. Physical. Showing up in tough or risky conditions. Build it by practicing presence. Steady real time with frontline teams. These aren't dramatic and live routing ads. They're everyday choices.
