In short

Why people care so much about being liked, linking it to an innate need to belong and modern self-worth. The episode argues that acceptance once determined survival in ancient social groups, but now “likability” functions more as a measure of worth. It claims many people equate being good or worthy of love with how many people like them, even if they don’t reciprocate. Key claim: the best way to satisfy the desire to belong is to look inward rather than outward at others’ opinions.

Well, research says that humans actually do have an innate need to be liked, and the origins of this feeling lie in our desire to belong.

1:14In ancient times, people relied on social groups for food, shelter, and security, so you needed to be accepted to meet your basic needs and survive. But today society has evolved and so have technologies that help us meet many of those same needs on our own. Likeability as a result has become less a mechanism for survival and more a way that we measure our self-worth. That's why today many of us still equate being good or worthy of love with the number of people who like us even when we don't like them all back. But one of our authors says the best way to fulfill this desire to belong is not by looking outward to others, but inward to ourselves.
