Imagine telling Taylor Swift fans two years ago that she would announce her 12th album on a football podcast hosted by her boyfriend and his brother.

1:04You'd get blank stares, but that's exactly what just happened. I'm Kevin Evers, a senior editor at Harvard Business Review Press. I'm also the author of There's Nothing Like This, a book about the strategic genius of Taylor Swift. And what just happened? It's a masterclass in marketing. This was her very first podcast appearance. For years, she has kept a very tight grip on her narrative. Very few media interviews. Very few unscripted social media moments. That's a classic scarcity strategy. Limit access to make every interaction, every moment feel more valuable. But here's the pivot. She used that pent-up demand to turbocharge her announcement and to give fans something extremely valuable.

1:42She offered them a moment of radical abundance. A rare two-hour personal interview with the person who's been at the center of her most talked about relationship. This guaranteed massive attention and she offered a big emotional payoff for her fans and brought along some new fans in the process. In business, the goal shouldn't be to speak all the time. The goal should be to carefully choose your moment, your message, your medium, and your audience for maximum impact. Build up demand and then give people more than they expect. Way more. In Taylor's case, a simple Instagram message might have been enough to build up a lot of hype.

2:18But she did more than that because her actions show that she understands that how you deliver a message can be just as powerful as the message itself.
