In short

Planning for retirement while preserving one’s “legacy,” and reducing workaholism without losing impact.

Guest backgrounds

No guests mentioned; the host answers a listener’s question directly.

Key claims

Only the individual can define their legacy; the listener should write down the impact they want to make and what life/work should look like, then work backward to redesign their role. The episode also argues that boundaries outside work often force better prioritization at work.

Notable examples

The transcript uses no real guest examples, but includes a “work a little bit less while still making a difference” scenario from the listener.

I've had a long career and I'm starting to plan ahead for retirement in five or so years. I'm just not really ready to totally give up. I'd like to figure out a way to still add value and leave a legacy without being such a workaholic.

1:10How do I figure out how to work a little bit less while still feeling like I'm making a difference? Well, first of all, congratulations. The fact that you're even thinking about legacy and you're thinking about retirement. I mean, there's nothing better than that, right? So here's the thing. I think the first thing you ought to think about, we should break this question a little bit up because there was a lot in there. The first thing is about legacy. Only you can define what that legacy is. So a question I would have for you is what does that even mean for you? What might look like a legacy to me might look very different than what it is for you.

1:41And you don't, if you don't have a clear picture around what that is, then it's time to put pen to paper and articulate that for yourself. What's the impact that you want to make? What do you want your life to look like? What do you want your work to look like? And really nail that. Then you can work backwards and figure out in what way do I need to approach this role that would enable me to have that impact. It sounds to me like you're in a situation now or a time where you need to start redefining what's most important for you in your role, as well as what happens outside of your work. Because it's often those boundaries outside of work that then force us to really prioritize onto what's most important when we're at work.
