Across the country, more employees are stepping into care for aging family members, and most of them are doing it without support from their employers. Hi, I'm Ken Dyke-Walt, founder and CEO of AgeWave, and I spent five decades studying aging longevity and the future of work.
1:11In our new article for Harvard Business Review, my co-authors and I take on a challenge that's about to reshape the workplace, elder care. Right now, 23 million working Americans are elder caregivers. More working adults now care for an older adult than for a young child. And that number is only expected to rise as Americans live longer and need increasingly complex care. And many of them, elder caregivers, are in their prime career years. Most are women, and one in five are also raising children. When employees are overwhelmed at home, they can't perform their best at work, and the cost is real.
1:49If you factor in lost employment, distraction, higher absenteeism, and compromised employee health, Family caregiving now costs$264 billion each year, and yet most workplaces aren't built to support these employees. So my co-authors and I set out to understand what these employees actually need. We surveyed over 800 working adults providing elder care. 92 % of respondents said they need more support, including from their employers. If you want to keep your workforce healthy, focused, and committed, the most important thing you can do is make support visible and easy to access. That means clear communication, manager training, and benefits designed for real-life complexity, not just policies on paper.
