In short
Steelers training camp updates and mindset changes, focusing on padded-practice “thud” tackling, improved communication/scheme understanding with Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy, and a crowd scuffle over autographs. The hosts also discuss Steelers Hall of Honor inductees and a separate guest segment about NFL-style body-care routines.
Guests (and backgrounds)
No named guest interviewees in this transcript; it’s mainly hosts James “Deebo” Harrison and Joe Hayden. Mentions include Aaron Rodgers (QB), Mike McCarthy (coach), and TJ Watt (defensive player). A separate quoted athlete segment features Shador (a young Browns player) discussing strict sleep/communication schedules.
Key claims
Padded “thud” practice improves tackling technique (balance, pad level, meeting force with force) and reduces lunging. Rodgers/McCarthy bring “new voice” and earlier, clearer route/communication so players don’t second-guess on game day. Rodgers is in a “peace” mindset for his final season and wants limited preseason snaps.
Notable examples
DK Metcalf describing easier communication with Rodgers; a New England example where Tom Brady’s team knew the game plan early; Steelers camp autograph scuffle involving Pat Fryer moving to stop a confrontation.

4:01James Harrison:I'm doing great, brother Debo. Beautiful day. Great weekend. Saturday. Kicked it with the kids. You know what I'm saying? Had a great pool day. Weather was amazing. Sunday, church, you know what I'm saying? Pops, goes to my pops church, you know what I'm saying? Master's Child out in Bowie. Great service, you know what I'm saying? And then after that Sunday, you know, Sunday nights, had my little gang. So, yeah, great, great weekend. Came out healthy. Yeah, pool and all that. You got a pool? You got a pool and all that? That's crazy, Joe. Yeah, you know, got a nice little pool. You know, play a little 12, save a little cheese, got a little crib.
4:39Talked out the way.
4:40James Harrison:You know, I'm out the way. Joe, I ain't gonna even lie. My weekend was uneventful. I really didn't do much, but that's a good thing. The fact that I'm here is the greatest gift. Waking up in the morning. Yes, sir. Waking up in the morning, brother. That is the greatest gift that you can get. Yes, sir. Now, let's go on here and get to some more of this still news that we got going on. A lot of stuff that we got to get into. Please, let's get to it. We got the Steelers. They announced their 2026 Hall of Honor inductees. The class will have former GM Kevin Colbert, Craig Wolfley, who passed, was it a year or two ago?
5:28He was offensive lineman drafted in 1980. And he was part of the Steelers radio crew from 2002 until his passing, I believe. And then you got JT Thomas, first round pick, 1973. Played corner 73 to 81 in the backfield with, of course, Mel Blunt. Congratulations to you guys, man. Look forward to them guys being inducted as well. Deserved honor and couldn't have him to a better GM. No, I'm lying.
6:07James Harrison:yeah but deserve i'm messing with kevin good dude kevin good dude no question about it brother let's jump on in over here man see what we got cracking over here at training camp over the last what was it what's it been three four days well the last couple days let's just see what the last couple days have had for us right now it's monday so the stillers actually will have their first padded practice. Okay. Man, see, look, my braces is getting to you early. Hold up. I might be off. I might be off. I might be off. They might get taken off next weekend, Joe. They might get taken off. Okay. Okay. After 25 years, 318 ,000, 50 ,000 days, they might get taken off, Joe.
6:51James Harrison:Man, I am rooting for you, brother. Hey, I'm rooting for me, too. But today, Monday, will be the first day of a padded practice. So. Let's go. All the not tackling that actually is going to be tackling, which I believe, yes, it's going to be thud up. It's the hit, wrap, release, releasing so, you know, other guys can pursue. Yes. It's a small carry. I don't think any of this is going to affect the physicality of our team, you know, because you're still going to have to hit. I think it'll make us, like I said before, it'll definitely make us better tacklers because now you have to get up there.
7:29You have to come to balance. You got to bend your knees. You got to form tackle because you can't lunge. You can't just reach out. You got to get yes. You got to get all that in place. And you know what? Now I think about it, it might make us more physical.
7:42James Harrison:Come on, man. You have to put your pads on somebody. And the guys that's not used to coming down there with that force, you got to come with that force and you got to bring that force. You got to meet force with force because you don't know if that running back is going to do you that or if he's going to try and psych you. So you got to come to balance and realize that, you know what? I got to meet force with force. It's no longer me cutting and diving that tackles and all that. No, I mean, you're speaking the facts. Because that getting in position where you can be able to reach out your arms, it's really watching the tape.
8:11James Harrison:Are you in football position to be able to stud a man up? That's tougher than being able to run, kind of chase down, lunge, dive. You got to put a body on a body. That's putting you in position that you're not. You don't have to get to that. It makes it more. You got to do it. You got to take a couple more steps. You got to get yourself in position a little better. So, I mean, with this, technique-wise, for sure. Tackling, you want to get people on the ground, but that's just causing injuries. Where I feel like end of the day, you're in the NFL. Like, you know what I'm saying? You know how to tackle.
8:40James Harrison:You know how to get people on the ground. So, thudding them up, getting yourself into that position. Yes. And now, okay, boom. And I'm stopping the momentum. Like, when you're watching, like, for practice with the thudding up tempo, that's legit. Because if you make me tackle him, let me get to right where I need to go and I can shoot his legs. Like, that's what I'm trying to tackle there. When I got to thud him up, it's like, all right, bring your pads. You might get pushed back a little bit, but you got to really, you know what I'm saying, still, man, put your pads on him. It's going to be a nice little thud.
9:07James Harrison:It's like, okay, boom. Tackling right here, that would have been easy. I had to tackle him, no problem. Yeah, definitely. I guess we had Ian Rappaport. He flew up to a training camp, I guess, stopped up there for a visit. And he said that it's a lot of people or a lot of people said that it's great or it's good. It's a good difference that they're seeing. I think. I can't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A lot of guys says that, you know, it's good to have. I think when, you know, when you say or when guys say that or whoever is saying that, it kind of depends on the person who says it. Because when you, you know, you talk about it, I think a big part of it is just like new, you know.
9:53You don't know what you don't know. You don't know what you don't know. Right. And a big part of that newness is, I believe, is a greater understanding on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively, schematically. That's what I think. And you actually have it where DK a few days ago, he was talking about it where he was comparing communication that he has with Aaron Rodgers. I think we got sound. We got sound on that. He would ask me what routes I won or early in the week I could have said, hey, I like this route. I don't like this route early on in the week instead of letting it bleed until Sunday.
10:30And then we get in the game and we're both like on eggshells, not knowing what the other one's thinking. But now it's like an open form of communication. I like X, Y, and Z. He likes X, Y, and Z, and we can both move forward. And, yeah, like I said, that's one of the things I think is, like, the scheme-wise, communication-wise, you have a better understanding. There's no, like he said, second-guessing. They even talked to, I believe it was, they talked to TJ. And TJ said, you know, it's a good change. And, you know, when you think about, like, you know, a guy saying it's a good change is this.
11:03I think part of the thing he was, you know, alluding to is that, you know, know, he was talking about, you know, some things get old. It's messaging. You know what I'm saying? Like, you start hearing the same thing over and over, then, you know, it don't hit you the same way. Especially, you know, like, I can't motivate you with the same thing for 10 years straight. It's hard work. It's hard work. Especially if I can't come with anything new. And he was talking about, you know, it's kind of different not hearing, you know, having the timeisms and all that stuff. And for me, that was, again, that was, yeah, it's great.
11:34It's great motivation. It's great things to hear. It pumps you up, gives you what you need. But he also talked about Mike McCarthy, like really, you know, giving them an understanding of what it meant to be a Pittsburgh Steelers in the city and how he had made a video and how he related the city and the steel workers to the team and how that the steel mills and how that, you know, actually is integrated into it because, you know, he's a person that grew up here. You know, you go back and you look at Mike's interview where he's actually talking about the Steelers and he he puts in what he calls the what was the six was it six fundamentals to Stiller football.
12:15So it's distiller six, he called it, I should say. And one was ball security, obviously. Another was blocking. So ball security, getting the ball, taking the ball away. Okay. Blocking and getting off blocks. So basically, you got to stay on your block. And when you're on defense, you got to work to get off your block. Tackling, breaking tackles, all this is just fundamentals. You know, it's big plays. That's just things that happen through the process of the game. And it's a certain number of big plays that each team has. And once you get to a likelihood of a higher number of those plays, you have a higher chance of winning.
12:55Pursuit and finish. And, you know, that's just being relentless after the ball, maximizing your effort, finishing. No lows. Knocking. Finishing when you're tackling. Finishing when you're chasing. It's 100 % no matter what you're doing. And then when he talked about, what was it, mannerisms and disguises, that was something that he was talking more of like body language, like showing faking blitzes and things where quarterbacks need to understand and realize what they're looking at, the receivers understanding what they're seeing and having that communication going together, you know, with the quarterback and everyone else being on the same page.
13:37So, you know, I think that's what a lot of those good things that they're talking about or that they're seeing and being positive about is coming from. Would you take any other different look from that or would you be on the same page? How would you see it, Joe?
13:58James Harrison:I would think that basically I think you're saying the same thing that I'm on. T.J. Watt is saying that Mike McCarthy is a new voice. And when I was saying just the way the training camp flows, the no benches out there, it's just for real, for real. It's just, you know, it's new. It's new. It's where this coach is not playing. It's execution. And when you're saying that they're learning that the schemes on offense, the schemes on defense, the getting in and out of the huddle, Mike McCarthy has always been productive at having great offenses. So with them being able to him and Aaron Rodgers, they need to be on the same page.
14:34James Harrison:So with him making sure that the team is moving in a different direction, you're not just loafing. There's no lull time. There's time for us to always be able to get execution, be able to get communication together. So the skilled players, the players have never been the problem. We've always had T.J. Watt, Hyde Smith, Jalen Ramsey. It's the execution of people running open. It's the sky-free. So basically, we're just bringing back to the basics and making sure holding everybody accountable. So I think that's what it comes down to. When Coach T is there, loved Coach T. But like when I say it was a little flowy, there was people you could sit on the side.
15:14James Harrison:It wasn't as much like attention to detail. So the attention to detail is I think what they're talking about is where it's like there's no gray. There's no gray. Right. There's no gray. There's no gray. What everybody's learning is the same exact thing. And everybody's being told the same. Everybody's being told the same thing. So I think that's kind of what people are saying without saying it. Amazon Pharmacy presents Painful Thoughts. It's been a long, bumpy road dealing with yet another bladder infection. And driving to the pharmacy to pick up meds, I went over a pothole and a little pee came out.

When DK Metcalf is saying, now I can go to him and talk, and now we don't have to go about on Sunday with not knowing where routes we were running, that's crazy. You're DK Metcalf. You should be able to go talk to Aaron Rodgers.
18:53James Harrison:You know this early by Wednesday. We're already, by Monday, we know what's going on. We've already watched the tape from last game. Tuesday, Wednesday practice, we knowing exactly what's going on. So that's what we're doing first and second down. By Friday, we're knowing what I like in the red zone. We're doing that earlier in the week. So when we're saying just basic things of now, I know what I like, you know, I need to be. And that's what the eye in the sky don't lie. So it's just execution, everybody being on each other. Yeah. And that's like you said, that's top to bottom. When you have it at the top and it goes straight, it goes the same at the top as it is to the bottom.
19:28Everything in between, it connects, man, and just flows. And matter of fact, I'm going to give you an example. So when I was in New England, I went to New England and we had just made the Super Bowl, bro. And I'm going to play against Philly, right? Bro, it was Monday going into team meetings. And that was like that week before, you know, the week you stay at home and then you go the next week after. Yes. I know about that. But you know, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But anyway. Sorry, Joe. I can't help myself sometimes. Sorry, Joe. But anyway, as soon as we came out of that meeting, bro, Tom walks past me, bro, and he's like, hey, get ready.
20:13We're about to score a lot of points. Bro, the man threw for 500 and some change that game, bro. We couldn't stop a damn nosebleed, bro. But he went, and when he said it, dude, if they hadn't put little cooks to sleep, Oh, man, it would have been a tough road to hold for him, bro. I don't even know if they'd have been there to stop him then. But he still threw for, what, a record 500-something? But anyway, my point is this, brother. He had already knew what was going down because everybody over there had the same communication. They had the same understanding. And that was literally as soon as they came out from, you know, the Monday meeting.
20:54Yeah. Where you're putting in your game plan and all the other stuff. So another thing, I guess Aaron, he talked to Mike Silva over the weekend. And I think another part is, you know, he's like real good with this last year thing, you know. He actually, I guess, reconnected with his family and all that through that process. I think like the full circle thing for him, as he talked about the full circle of being, you know, with McCarthy, this being his last year, all that other stuff. I think all that through that process, you know, and reconnecting. And I think all that is just like part of you getting older and realizing like things come to an end as far as his career being to an end.
21:41And you start connecting that with other things. And, you know, like he said, through, you know, that process, it was it wasn't like a quick thing. It was a couple of year processing, you know, and I guess his his wife was a big part of that him getting married and different mind change, different mindset, understanding and wanting to basically try and kill that narrative that was that was built up over the years and reconnect that. I think that's something that happens as you get older and realize that, you know, this little thing that happened here that you thought was a big thing and as big as you thought it is.
22:16You know, it's something that you need to be able to go back to and you can use and actually say, you know what, building that back. And I think, dude, like he's like, he looked like he he feeling this stuff. He looked like he feeling real good. Like everything is like his talk is is way more positive than it was, you know, in last year, especially around this time. Like, it was cool, but it wasn't that energy that came with it.

22:40James Harrison:What do you think, Joe? I feel you. I think you come to a place of peace. I think A-Rod knows where he is in his career. He knows that this is the last dance. He's happy with his family. He comes to a happy spot. So now when you have Coach Mike McCarthy, you know that you're going to be, you're Aaron Rodgers. You're going to have to do your job. You're going to have an offensive coordinator coach that's going to be putting you in positions to win, helping the team, making sure everybody else is going to have to be on their spots. Offense is going to be, he's been in Mike McCarthy's offense before.
23:09James Harrison:So he's confident to be like, look, if I got these guys, I got DK, I got Michael Pittman. He sees the weapons that he has around him. It's not like we don't have a mob. So with A-Rod, I was like, all right, this is going to be my way out. I got Mike McCarthy. I've done damage with him before. I got a nice squad around me. I got some vets. I got some young dudes. Defensively, we have ballers. So it's not like you're going in there with a half clip. You're going into the game with a fully loaded clip. You got your offensive coordinator. You got your coach. And now you went to New York, and it didn't go the way it went.
23:42James Harrison:It didn't happen the way it wanted to. So you still wanted to continue your career. Came to Pittsburgh with Coach T. New vibes, good vibes. Okay, didn't happen like last year. Now you got – now you announced, this is my final season. Mike McCarthy's here. I played with him before. And all that history that they had and not being able – he's been to the Jets. He's lost before. He knows like now all that, let bygones be bygones. We are here now. You're new to Pittsburgh. You're trying to come win something. I'm trying to come win something. Let's do something great together because I know we know how to run this offense.
24:15James Harrison:Now we got a good defense. We got a squad. Let's make something happen. So I think A-Rod just being able to come to like the realization of just life is life and the end of the career is happening for everybody. And now he's like, he doesn't want to go out weak. You know, he's A-Rod. You want to go out at the top? Yes. They're showing dudes. You know what I'm saying? At the same time, like, Tom Brady wasn't running around crazy. A-Rod still got that arm. He can still throw the ball. He's still slinging that ball around beautifully. Now you're back in that West Coast where he's been doing it. And now, guys, let's catch the rock.
24:49James Harrison:Rico Didal, let's run the pill. Jalen Warren, let's run the pill. You know what I'm saying? Defense, let's lock up. So with TJ, with A-Rod, he's like this, boom. We got him all. I got Cam, got Jalen. So he's looking at his team like, man, my defense is nice. Like, these dudes, they go out there and play well. I can see them. They wouldn't have to be the reason. And then offense, we got mobbed. So we don't need to be the reason. Let's go out here and see what's up. So I'm loving the mindset, though. Because, you know, you realize your football, everybody has a football date. Like, you're going to retire.
25:25James Harrison:It's over. Football mortality. Nobody's immortal in football. No question. Nobody's immortal in football. He said about the West Coast offense, he said, I can run this offense well at my age. I beat teams with my mind. Listen, he's trying to tell you, like he was saying, as he said earlier, like, you know, it's timing. There's a lot of it is timing, having that good timing with your receivers and your receivers knowing like, yo, I can't let this dude cut me off. I'm supposed to get inside here because he's going to throw the rock on time. Yes. Some things aren't timing. It's A. It's going to be that one-on-one.
25:57You'll want to make a play. Come on. Like, whoever going to make the play, make the play, you know? Yes. I guess he said Mike McCarthy wants Aaron to play two preseason games, I guess the Packers and the Giants. And Aaron told Mike Silver, he said, he wants me out there 30, 40 plays. I said, Mike, if you want me to play, I'll play. I'm not saying I want to do it, but he wants me to do it. Listen, man, you understand, he don't want to be out there in no preseason game, They had somebody come to slap around the corner on him. For sure, for sure. Yeah.
26:33James Harrison:Hey, bro, handoffs, quick game. You know what I'm saying? Get out of there. Let's just get the flow going. Look, if the drives, get the good drive going. Get out there. Look good. Look good. Boom, boom. Get two first downs. Get a field goal. Chill. Don't go out there. Give me 15 in the touchdown. Give me 15 plays in the touchdown. I'll pull you on up out of there. Give me a drive. Give me three first downs in the tutty and you're out. Look smooth. Make it look like clockwork. You control how long you're in. Yes. Yeah, I know what I want to go for. I know what I want to go for. I know for sure.
27:09James Harrison:So look, Averick, you go out there. If you go out there and you give me that high 15 and it look like they can't stop you, I might have to pull you out. You know what they would say? When the defense— Second preseason game, I'm definitely going to have to give you at least third. They like, look, they tell us— You ain't going to see the third. Y 'all got a couple drives. You go out there and get two three and outs. They're like, God, okay. Y 'all did okay. Y 'all feeling good. Y 'all looking good. Now you go out there talking about, hey, you got a couple drives. You done let them hit for 15. Oh.
27:36They come back out for another 10 plays. For another 10. Oh, you're right back out there.
27:40James Harrison:What are we doing? Every first down, they get reset. Come on, guys. Come on. First and 10. Let's get them behind the sticks. They just marching it down. Second and six. All right. Okay. Third and two. Come on, let's get a stop. Dang. Run for three. And that's the ones that hurt. The methodical drives. Like, okay, you popped me from 15 to 20. Okay. Go ahead, sit down. No, you going to - They walk it down on you? Walk it down? In the preseason? You got your starters out there? Y 'all, we're hype? Oh, man. You already know, man. All you got to do is get two, three, and outs. You up out of there. Two, three, and outs.
28:19Look good. Everybody's hype.
28:22James Harrison:you get a tackle for loss on the first run deep bomb boom second and 12 you're off the field in your mind a little dump off second to 10 to anything 9 we're getting off the sticks in my mind we getting off it ain't nothing that can be done unless somebody mess up but that ain't gonna happen that ain't gonna happen I guess they had a little scuffle out there. Oh, no. Pat Fryer moved. He had to save the kid. The fans was out there scuffling, Joe. Grown men. See, they got to do better, man. Grown men. We got the clip, but I guess we might not have had no sound. It was a little too much cursing. Look at that.
29:12Oh, Fire Move. Slow that back. Slow that back. Slow that back. Fryer Move had to come get the kid. He had to come get the kid, man. He had to come get the kid, man. They got him pressed up against the fence, man. Joe.
29:29James Harrison:Debo, I don't know the exact what's going on in this situation, but I... It's autographs, bro. You know it's autographs. No, no, no. I'm saying who was pushing who and why, but the autographs... You know how some people be... They're trying to get... I understand. Some people put their kids in the front. A lot of the time... I understand. Try to get them to sign up because a lot of people are selling these autographs. If it's an old man, though, at the same time, that's a fan that's just standing there the whole time, I don't know. Some people are janky and just using their kid to steal autographs.
30:03James Harrison:If it's a kid that's been standing up there. I don't care, bro. If it's an old man, too. You can't smash the kid in your disagreement with another grown man about an autograph. You can't smash a kid. You can't smash. You got to know where you're around. And how ain't nobody get kicked out? the security at the joints has kind of seemed fluke where's the security you know and it ain't no real it ain't no real security around you know they got like little kids volunteer the volunteers yeah one of those kids you know came over there they been up put their hand on them or something like that you know you don't expect nothing like that two grown men out here scuffling over autograph i think that's the first time i'd have never seen a scuffle man yeah that's the first time i've seen the legitimate scuffle.
30:43It's usually on the field. You know, we acting stupid. It's hot. We ain't, you know, we ain't got to go home in two days. You know, you got all that built up testosterone and everything. You ain't had no, you ain't released nothing. You know what I'm saying, Joe?
30:56James Harrison:Yeah, he got to chill. They got to chill. They real, real, real aggressive over there with the kids all in the way. You want a grown man. Listen, man, we got to be a little bit of security, I guess, when we get up there Monday and Tuesday, brother. next Monday and Tuesday. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. Yes. We will be at camp, y 'all. We will be at camp. That's what I'm talking about. Women's from camp. We don't know what time yet, but depends on the still of schedule, but when we figure it out, we will let y 'all know. And we gonna go, whoa, he getting rough with it too, Joe. Yeah, bro. That's, I don't understand that.
31:39James Harrison:He gotta chill. The kids right there, man. That's something you would do, huh? No way. Are you kidding me? Not even close, Debo. I'm making sure. If I see any children there, they're going to get the autograph. That's what the Browns, I'm saying. That's something you used to seeing at the Browns camp. No, when I was coming to the Browns camp, I had all the kids making sure I got their autographs. I would be the last one out there. I'd be out there for hours at the practice, Debo. I ain't going to lie to you, Joe. I was signed. I used to sign, sign, sign, sign, Joe. And then I realized that no matter how much you sign, you can't do it.
32:19So I was like, you know what? I just picked two days. I'm like, all right, I'm going to get 30 minutes. Or I'm going to go and I'm just going to make sure I walk up the hill here. And then I'm going to hit this side. And the next day I'll hit the other side or whatever that may be. And then when I didn't want to sign, I'm like, yo, I'm jumping on this cart. I'm going around the backside. Dang.
32:40James Harrison:Sometimes you got to get, you know what I'm saying? Bro, sometimes, bro, you just don't feel it, bro. You tired. You got to get up there. You know, like, I got to get in this cold tub, man. I got to take care of my body. I got to get to eating. You know what else? Don't let you get bombed up. I got to go watch this film. And I got to watch this film. You go out there and you go ahead. You done caught two picks, Joe. You signing everything up. Oh, I'm signing. You ain't worried about it, Joe. You ain't worried about it. We about to go watch this tape. I'm about to slow it down. I'm about to jump in the crowd and walk through there and go ahead.
33:12James Harrison:Seven on seven. Seven on seven. Play 16. Yep, just wait on that one, guys. I got a good one for you. Listen here, man. 36:23James Harrison:Joe. Joe, I don't even want to think about that, man. I don't even want to think about that, huh, D-Bo? I ain't going to lie, because I would have felt a little, like, I would have grabbed the kid, no question about it, but I'd have had to get some words in there. You know what I'm saying? You'd have had to get some follow-up words or something, but at least, like, tell them to come here, you know what I'm saying? Like, look in their eyes. Let them know. That you serious? You know? Maybe y 'all here fighting for no autographs. Sir, you look nuts. Oh, man, that sounds like something Cleveland would do.
36:52Anyway, man.
36:52James Harrison:It was at Pittsburgh. It was at Pittsburgh. That was crazy. There was probably old Cleveland friends that just converted this year, and they ain't got that Browns out of him. Right there. It was stillered up. Boxing in the damn crowd. Bumping in the shit. Listen, man. Listen, man. Pat Fyro, shout out, baby. Do it to good. Shout out, Fyro. Always. Next time, go ahead and jump out there and put your hand on one of them. Just touch him. No, don't, don't. You good, Pat. You good, Pat. Listen, just touch him. He would have tried to sue Pat. No, you just touch him. Say, hey, don't do that. Pat did exactly what he needed to do.
37:32James Harrison:There you go, Deebo, trying to get him playing. No, I said, touch him. All you got to do, Pat, would just touch him. Don't touch him, Pat. Just stay exactly where you at. Just touch him. Just touch him. Hey, talk nice to him and smile on his face when you say it. But let your eyes, smile on his face, but let your eyes say, I'm going to kill your punk ass. See? You know what I'm saying? Like that. Oh, you talking about like the Joker. Like this. Ah, okay. Like that. That's it. You know what I'm saying? That's it, Joe. I got you. I ain't tripping, Joe. I ain't tripping. Look here. Shador, your boy Shador said it.
38:01Yep, yep, yep. He's making major daily sacrifices to improve, emphasizing strict sleep. That's something I need to do, too, man. My sleep is garbage. I ain't going to lie to you. Strict sleep and communication schedules as he prepares for the season and aims to help the Browns. Joe, we have the sound. Let's do it. Let's run it. But, man, your attitude on the field, how you talk about you're in grind mode. Yeah. And it's training camp mode and grind mode and focus mode.
38:30James Harrison:See, it was so hard. We just got done doing the interviews over there. And, like, what matters to me at this point in life is ball and getting better every day. So that stuff doesn't help us win as a team. So it's like I don't really care about it. You know, so I angle my life and change my life to if this isn't helping us win, then why would I'm not I can't put my best foot forward with that what do you think your first impressions of the actual practice first couple days out here I think it was amazing I think uh a lot of players was flying around I was excited to be able for for the vets and everybody to get back you know we had rookie uh camp and during camp I'll say for me I was just figuring out my schedule figuring out my time figuring out what I need for for me personally like within the schedule to help me get to a place of autopilot.
39:21And what do you think that needs to be for you to kind of up your game, get to autopilot?
39:25James Harrison:Well, I'll say I time slot every one of my hours. I don't waste minutes in my day. Every day, you know, is important. And every day, you know, you either add into your goal or getting farther away from it. So all I do, strict sleep schedule, strict communication schedule like it's a lot of sacrifices I would say I made because of of of what I want to be able to bring to this team and what I want to do for this uh community and this whole program Joe um I um I love please saying I'm gonna say love because I'm a person that loves people who take care of their body. I love the process of taking care of your body and the upkeep.
40:16That's something that he's understanding right now, Joe, as a young man. Your old ass still don't understand it. That's why you got that janky hip. But listen, stop, stop, stop. Go, go, go. Now, the reason I don't like it is because he played for the Browns and that may possibly make them better. That's a positive factor. That's where my hating come into effect. But I will say, like, that is, especially for him to start doing that year two, he already had, I ain't going to lie to you, it took me almost three years before I realized that, you know what, I can't do the things that I'm doing right now, trying to burn the candle at both ends, you know, partying all night and getting up early and getting it.
40:59nah, the process got to slow down. You got to do what you can. You got to do what you need to do to make sure you can take your body for as long as possible so you can play this game as long as possible, so you can stay as healthy as long as possible. I think a big thing that happens with a lot of guys is they don't see the end of the rainbow or the end of the tunnel coming until they're already sitting outside of it. And now I'm trying to back into the back door to see, oh, what can I do to get better? What can I do to get healthier? What can I do to make myself feel better? No, you should have did that in the process.
41:27And that's why the career time frame is three and a half. It's very few guys that get the amount of time that you and I got. So I love what he's saying. I love the mindset and the process that he's actually understood. I'm pretty sure he got that from his daddy. Daddy probably, you know, hey, listen, get right. He got this already in year two. And the big thing, man, sleep, like I still didn't sleep much of anything, but I just was able to get away with four to six hours, usually run between four and five. But where are you at with this, Joseph?
42:01James Harrison:Debo, this man Shador, like you said, the only reason why you had a negative for this is because it would be a positive for the Cleveland Browns. That's literally your only negative for what Shador said. Because you don't love too much of nothing. You don't love too much of nothing. I love body weight, baby. You love taking care of your body? Yes, sir. You love what Shador just said. Lord, no. Because my thing is this, Debo, and you know this as well as I do, you just basically said it. The quicker you understand that you're not going to play in the NFL forever, this is going to be max for quarterbacks like 20 years when you're a quarterback.
42:36James Harrison:But like skill position, you get 10, you get 15, like 12 for me. That's a long time in the NFL. So when you first get in, you don't realize that the end is as soon as you think it. Yes. You're not going to be in the NFL forever. So it took me about six years until I really got my PT person. So you're going to have to live and learn, learning an off-season routine. This was only his first off-season. So how are you going to have a routine when this is only your first one? You have to learn a routine. You got to get your schedule. You haven't been able to have this much time off to figure out where I'm going to live, who I'm going to train with, how is this going to actually work, because this is your first legitimate off-season.
43:16James Harrison:So trying to get your schedule, trying to figure out all this stuff is a lot. So with Shador saying this, I'm just like, I love it too. Because the quicker that you understand that I have to change my lifestyle, I can't be staying up all the time. Because it's going to be 20 years that I can just have a good schedule, take care of my body. Like the season is the whole year. There's no real off season. Your off season is part of your season. So you're never not staying ready. You're never not getting right. You're never not trying to learn. You're never not studying tape. So there's things that you really have to change.
43:54James Harrison:Lifestyle changes that the sooner that you do, because you realize that after 20 years, I can do whatever I want to do. I'm going to be retired. I'm going to live my career. And I maxed it out because I gave myself every opportunity to be the best player I could possibly be and not try to do too much. like have you you're going to live still but not like the main thing is the main thing i want to be the best quarterback in the nfl the main thing is the main thing you're quarterback of a professional football team so for receivers for cornerbacks dbs tight ends it's a little different because like it would be it would be better if you could get your body right instantly like just don't do the other stuff me myself personally it took me too long but i was not i was good at corner i was athletic and I didn't have to start doing the stuff because I was like, I'm just waking up.
44:42James Harrison:I was drafted at seven and just, you know, but at the same time if I would have still been like, Jody, lock in, take care of your body a little more, I could have silently still had my hips wouldn't be as a little jack, but I did it and I made it. But Shador saying this makes me feel good because from year six I was going, doing everything I had to do. Never, not a minute wasted because I'm like, this is what I have. I got seven more, eight more years to do this. But when you do it from the beginning, the earlier, after year one, after year two, year three, now you're locked in to like, man, I'm going to have to change this lifestyle and be a quarterback.
45:20And with quarterbacks, you got to be the most smartest.
45:23James Harrison:And you literally, because these dudes,$65 million a year is what they're paying these franchise quarterbacks. That lock in, son. You know what I'm saying? Because once you show that you're actually a quarterback, you're very mature. You handle your business the way that it goes. You seen Daniel Jones got the$44 million a year. You see my man Jordan Love, Drake May, 55, 56. So you're just like, okay, all I got to do is be very, very competent. You paid for May already? Go out here. No, no, no, not May. Not May. I meant it was Jordan Love. I was about to say, what's the flip? The ones that Baker Mayfield was comparing his contracts to.
45:59James Harrison:It was - Oh, I know you're talking. It was - I got you. Them dudes. So just in the mindset of if Shador, you're at a quarterback and you understand this, the earlier, the better. I'm all for it. Yeah, definitely. That was something that I ain't going to lie, like through the course of my career, because I was just doing it so much. When I retired, I was like lost. They're like, James, why are you working out like this? I'm like, shit, that's what I do. I don't know what else to do. Get up, I go work out, you know, and then, you know, I'm retired. Like, that was my life for, you know, 16 years, you know, so.
46:37And that was just, you know, my process. And when you go to taking care of your body, you probably didn't have no OGs that was like, yo, you got to do this and do that to take care of your body. See, I came into the situation and it was like I had James Ferrier. James Ferrier actually introduced me to the acupuncturist that I still use today. And then, you know, from there, it was Charlie Batch. He introduced me to a lady that I used to use that he had in Detroit. She used to come down and do that process and me just using, you know, different body workers here and there. It was a group of, you know, whatever it may be, people that I kept in a solid rotation.
47:10And, you know, year in, year out, I may add somebody else different depending on what it was that, you know, they did or how it affected, you know, how it made me be able to perform. So it came down to, you know, it was it was years where I'm, you know, spending 300 to 500 K a year and, you know, body working and taking care of my body and bringing people in and out. And, you know, I've probably used, I don't know, hundreds of people through the course of time. And when it came down to it, most of them aren't good. I ain't gonna lie. Most of them aren't good. Some of them are good, you know, decent.
47:49Some of them are very good. Very, very, very few are great. and through that process of just adding and realizing and seeing uh different people then I had a rotation like five people I had my chiropractor that would come through I had my my doctor would come through I'm a trainer that would come through acupuncturist I had a person a dry needle had a person that was cupping and I also had um another uh physio cryoperson so it was like uh like a jimmy bluff type of person but he was also a chiropractor uh and through that whole process like it was like i got to the point to where i didn't even need to use a chiropractor bro like i just like yo my chiropractor is great he's this and that okay is he all right watching work all i gotta do is watching work on three people if he worked the same way on three people i know he ain't what you say he is because there's no way three people got the same issues on their alignments like he got he got one technique he got he got he got a he got a checklist he's going through and that's it he's not you know i i've been using my guy since 2012 13 and he still has different ways that he's adjusted me up to this year that he hadn't used before because of an issue that i may have or not have depending on how it works where he needs to get it to be able to move and it won't move you know you get the guy that's like oh there it go no i ain't nothing move bro yeah you know you can't sit there and force something to make it move.
49:16So what he does, he just tries different ways of making it move because he has the knowledge and understanding of how to make it move. And then what relates to that thing that he needs to make move that may be in a totally different part of the body that's locked up, that's not allowing it to move. So that is great for Shador, man.
49:34James Harrison:Okay. Laundry stinks. Literally. I mean, you could just keep buying new underwear. Not that I've ever done that. Or maybe sort your clothes into piles based on how re-wearable or filthy they are? Or just use Arm & Hammer Deep Clean. It's made for real-life stings and stains.
