In short

Helios CEO Mert Mumtaz argues Solana is massively undervalued for the 2026 cycle and explains why traders miss it. He frames crypto investing around “physics” (scaling architecture) and “incentives” (ecosystem value capture), claiming Solana’s ecosystem is set up like a “global Silicon Valley” for building internet-native capital markets. He also defends Zcash after a recent “Zcash is down/dead” FUD wave, describing a patched security issue plus block-explorer node lag, and claims Zcash is strengthening formal verification as AI increases exploit risk.

Guest backgrounds

No separate guest is clearly identified; the main speaker is Mert Mumtaz, co-founder and CEO of Helios (Solana infrastructure provider for internet-native capital markets). He references other figures/teams (e.g., Akshay, Eugene/Jerry at Phoenix, Zcash CEO Josh, Zcash teams like Zotal/Valar/Tachyon, and investors like Tushar from Multicoin Capital).

Key claims

Solana’s token upside comes from Solana becoming the biggest crypto/financial economy plus monetary changes (governance inflation reduction expected around fall; burn mechanism tied to compute). Solana’s “block space” is scarce and sticky, so demand should translate into SOL value. Zcash FUD is “non-event”; funds were safe; “infinite minting” claims are wrong due to the turnstile/notes mechanics; Ironwood migration and formal verification reduce future bug classes.

Notable examples

Solana token fell from ~$260 to ~$8; Helios seed funding late 2021; Hyperliquid as perps/trading platform; Solana leadership changes (Akshay stepping down); Zcash bug patch + block-explorer lag; Ironwood upgrade; “turnstile” explanation; comparisons to spaceflight-style guarantees vs consumer-software bugs.

0:00Solana is very clearly the obvious choice. So how come people aren't seeing it this way? It's because you're getting your source from CT and CT is dominated by traders. And what do traders know? A trader can always make money by following the wave and maybe seeing certain things earlier than others. But fundamentally, the people who are actually deep down in the ecosystem are the ones who can get enough conviction at$8. What's the thesis for Solana in 2026? Since it's a general chain. Mert Mumtaz, the co-founder and CEO of Helios.

0:27Mert Mumtaz:a leading infrastructure provider for Solana, a builder advancing internet native capital markets and blockchain innovation. A few friends asked me to look at the new scaling roadmap that Zcash has. It was out of the top 100 as a coin. And I looked at it and I was like, oh, shit, that is actually quite interesting. But just like Solana at$8, Zcash at$18 was the exact same thing. I don't do this game of what's everybody talking about and then maybe let's do some rotation games. It's more like, does it have the physics? Does it have the incentives? If the answer is yes, then that's your edge. I don't hold any NIR coin.

0:56What am I failing to understand? I don't think NIR is there today, but I do think NIR has a lot of potential. It's not as high of a conviction plate that I have with Zcash and Solana. But first of all, what are the set of things that you want to look at when you're evaluating a project? But if you look at crypto as a whole, it is one of the only things that stands out to me for how undervalued it is compared to the things above it. Solana has all the talk the last two cycles. And you tell us, while the token was down only, what has been happening behind the scenes to prepare the ecosystem for the future.

1:26Yes, well...

1:31Hi everyone. This is the little bit that I know none of you like that can help us make a huge difference for this show and we want to take it next. 71 % of the people who regularly watch When Shift Happens have not subscribed. And so all I'd ask you if you want to make a huge difference is the following. If you've seen this show before and you like it, help me help my team hit the subscribe button and we'll continue to build this show for you thank you how are you doing uh i'm a little sick to be honest uh nothing infectious just stomach but um otherwise good life is good still on the zines i i i cycle i'm on it sometimes i'm on not on and sometimes because otherwise it's just you build up a tolerance what do you do when you're not on zins what else do you take or do

2:24just coffee coffee yeah a lot of coffee yeah until 4 or 5 a.m no i have a routine i go from coffee and then black tea and then green tea and then diet coke but you have this i mean i don't know if it's true i was talking with um um one of the zcash guys he was telling me you don't you you have this sleep cycle where you work at night is it still the case is it what still the case yes so you work until like 5 from zcash dev maybe zuko shop whatever uh yeah i mean uh because arjun oh yeah arjun um yeah i mean arjun is completely opposite he goes about like 8 p.m it's actually crazy but like invite people over in Dubai and then like everyone will just start and he's like I'm going to bed but yeah we start I go to bed at like 4 or 5 a.m.

3:23usually is it like the some people say ADHD brain works better at night oh for this is what you have well it works better for some things it doesn't work better for other things for writing and creativity which is useful in marketing and Twitter and even writing memos to the team or strategy docs. I think it's useful to do stuff at night. For super analytical stuff, like actually looking at the numbers, it's better to do in the morning. Anyway, did we? You're one. Huh? You're one. Oh, shit. Okay, I did not know that. One, but we'll cut like whatever is interesting. Okay. How do you have a relationship when you have these weird sleep cycles?

4:14If you have a girlfriend whose cycle is like Arjun, you never meet. That's why the relationship is amazing. No problems. It is difficult for sure. I think just being in a relationship is difficult as a CEO. especially in crypto which is a global thing and it's a remote company as well right but i'm also not i also do other things on top of being a ceo of helios obviously i need to advocate for solana and zcash and people don't see almost 99 of the things i do but that's mostly behind the scenes of unblocking things getting things listed and i think just in general being a relationship for the other person uh for the partner is difficult because my attention is very spiky in in how it's directed right sometimes i can give attention but sometimes i'm at a family dinner let's say and then i get paged and it's hard to describe like hey if i don't get this then 90 of the solana ecosystem is going to be in trouble and as a result so will my team and And as a result, sold my revenue.

5:34And as a result, we might die. There's all these considerations that are hard to reason about unless you're in that seat. What do you do? Do you explain or just say, guys, I don't have time now, so I need to go? Without sounding like an asshole. It is really hard to do without sounding like an asshole just because I'm already foreign. And so I have a naturally unwarm demeanor, let's say. but I think it's what once it's something I said up front I say we can do all sorts of these different things but the one boundary is that when I need to work I need to work it's nothing personal it's just I liken it to having a child or a baby if the baby is crying at night somebody has to deal with it it obviously can't be you it's my baby in this case which is the company and so you either take care of the baby or the baby kills itself in some way or just completely breaks everything in the house and so it's really no different than that i'll have extra practice for when we actually have kids in dealing with random fires all the time are you not going to be one of those who says hey my baby is the business our baby is your baby i need to sleep sometimes i don't have time no no definitely not i think If you're having an actual child, then the child needs its father just as much as its mother.

7:04Now, obviously, that might look different depending on the expectations you set up. Some people are more traditional. Some people are not.

7:15But I would like my children to be extremely, extremely, way more successful than I ever was. and so they come first for sure since we last spoke i think last time we spoke was about six to nine months ago you have now like six times more followers on x like 1.2 million i saw some people saying oh is that possible is an industry plant are you of course yes that's why i joined in 2020 and everything broke. Well, it's because, so when you make a new account on X now, they rolled out these things called starter packs. So how that works is back in the day, they used to just make you follow topics.

8:09So whether it's cryptocurrency or World Cup or politics, now they give you, when you click one of those they give you a list of five to ten accounts that are recommended for that and I'm on the crypto list so when you let's say you're a new account you say you're interested in crypto then it's a starter pack of me Anatoly Vitalik I think Raj Robert Leshner from compound and I think a few other people and then myself. So it's just, it's a very good top of funnel. The best. Yes.

8:51Crypto never sleeps, but neither do opportunities in traditional markets. Variational is bridging both worlds with 50 plus new market listings every month, giving you access to stocks, commodities, indices, and more. all through a modern trading platform. Because sometimes, the biggest alpha isn't finding a new coin. It's remembering the rest of the world's markets exist. Big thanks to my friends at Bitwise Asset Management for backing today's conversation. Bitwise is a global crypto asset manager with more than$11 billion in client assets and more than 70 crypto solutions. That includes ETFs, index funds, SMAs, custom option strategies, staking, vaults and more.

9:37However you want to invest in crypto, the experts at Bitwise have you covered. Solana was all the talk the last two cycles. The first cycle you were not in yet, at least not as a builder like you are now. In 2020-21, Sol did like a 500x. It was mostly speculation on narratives, FTX, SBF, mostly speculation on the token. Went up to like$260, went down to$8, which is more or less when you decided to go in the ecosystem. Then it rose from the hashes, 2023. Then we had this crazy cycle, which was fundamentally driven with activity, but still mostly based on speculation mainly meme coins token went from like eight to three hundred dollars and now the token went down another i think 80 back to 60 but some stuff has been happening in solana can you tell us why the token was down only and so many people calling so enough dead again what has been happening behind the scenes to prepare Solana and the ecosystem for the future?

11:00Yes, well, first, I wasn't very well known on the first Solana cycle, but I was still in the ecosystem. So, for example, Helios raised seed funding in late 21. So we were already building things there, except I was mostly focused on NFTs and bots and arbitrage and all sorts of different things and writing salon educational things. And then when the SPF thing happened, that just gave me a lot of ammo. So I felt like it was target practice. I was just in the ring and then all of a sudden all these dummies started popping up for me just hit in the face with some facts and so that was just a good moment or good opportunity so as far as why the token went down well there's a few things here one is it's obviously the case that everything went down so I was so funny enough this whole time I've been vibe coding a project called Chuck Price.

12:10So when Opus first came out, the day it came out, I started using it. And then I was vibe coding prediction markets. And I bought this domain called chuckprice.com just for the memes. And then as I was vibe coding it, I have to check the price all the time, right? Because it's only job is to show you the prices. And every day I look at the site and the total crypto market cap is like 3 trillion, 2.9 trillion, 2.7 trillion. Every day, it's just check price, awful price. And obviously, Bitcoin went from, I believe, a high of 120 to obviously as low as 57 or something around this range. And since I was extremely focused on

13:00developer activity on solana but also in terms of investments obviously zcash was actually doing very well so the entire market went from i think the market lost about two trillion in market cap combined but zcash went from 18 to like 600 and then it went down again then it's so like it's been i haven't really felt the pain so to speak and so So at first, I was a little late to feeling the pain on Solana. Obviously, Solana with the rise of hyperliquid as well. So a few things happened, right? Obviously, crypto just as a market went down entirely. But then also two things happened. One is geopolitical instability.

13:45And why that's important is because that allowed people to speculate on things they couldn't speculate on before. So oil, for example, right? Imagine how interesting it is for traders to just leverage trade oil without KYC on the Internet based off of monitoring the situation on Iran or whatever Trump tweets and all sorts of different geopolitical considerations, right? So that's this addictive loop that makes you feel engaged. And so Hyperliquid obviously enabled that. But then also you have all these AI companies that are getting colossal in private rounds and they're about to go public. And so you have the pre-IPO price discovery for a lot of these stocks.

14:36And so that's another place where perps are perfectly suited because you can just speculate on the price and maybe that helps with true price discovery. I think like the cerebrous price discovery before their IPO was actually shown on the NASDAQ from TradeXYZ, right? That's pretty awesome. And so those things are happening. Hyperliquid is getting a lot of attention. The market is going down. And then there's concerns of Sol's monetary policies, but also how does it compete with Hyperliquid and all sorts of these things. And obviously, I also maybe stopped talking about Solana as much. I was still talking about the boring stuff, which most people don't care about, like the building and the data infrastructure.

15:25Really, it's a ton of products in that meantime, by the way. And so that CT is very much a high school cafeteria. It's people, it's monkey see, monkey do. Somebody copies somebody else's sentiments and now it's everybody else's sentiments. independent thinking is very rare. And so that, and then obviously there were leadership changes at Solana Foundation. Many people seem to have missed this or maybe didn't care about it as much as the Ethereum one, because everybody talks about the EF Foundation leadership changes, but Solana had probably just as big of a change. Now it wasn't a net outflux on Solana, it was more like a rotation so to speak right so a lot of the super highly competent people so my favorite guy is akshay who you probably know um he stepped down for example after breakpoint and that was actually i was very concerned about that because i was like akshay is like me too the smartest guy i know with like the best messaging he's one he's one of the reason i i put 80 of my portfolio in solely in 2023 in summer because I talked to him and I was like, this guy did like Uber IPO.

16:39He's like Balaji's right arm. He's like mega smart, mega high signal, low noise. Like, and now he's leaving. I was like, shit, like this is bad. What do I do with my soul? That was my, well, I wasn't like this, you know, I wasn't thinking about portfolio allocation, but I was like, oh, this is actually kind of, that's not great because actually I would say is He's the most competent foundation type person that I've seen in all of crypto. And it's not even close. He's also a good friend. And for example, he's the one who basically convinced me to pull the trigger on moving out of Canada. So he's very good at sort of telling stories.

17:20And for example, he came up with Internet Capital Markets, ICM, right? That was all him. He's the one who organized Breakpoint, all these different things. Anyway, so I was like, oh, shit. and um just one more thing sorry he's the one who came a bit less than a year and a half ago and said kavin there's only two projects that re-interest me today solana and zcash that was a year and a half ago yes yes uh i would say on the zcash part this is the time where i returned the favor of convincing him uh it wasn't just me of course there's a whole community around it biology is also interested right um but anyway so you you take all those different things the leadership changes and the hyperliquids rise and and then you know certain builders expanding chains and certainly we've been offered this as well people were paying us offering us money to expand different chains and so i really i was doing some thinking and i was like okay what do we do here, right?

18:20And basically, I came to the conclusion that, okay, look, I always look to Jeff Bezos for basically advice on most company related things. And so I looked at myself, and the facts, and I thought, okay, here's how to think about this. There's only two things that are important, that are fundamentally important. One is physics, and two is incentives. And what I mean by that is assuming a blockchain is structured such that it doesn't fight physics. So for example, I would argue that Ethereum's L2 approach fights physics because if you don't scale the core engine, then fundamentally you're limiting the scaling of everything else.

19:06And so you're moving physics around, but you're not actually improving. It'll come back at you at some point unless you tackle it head on. And then number two is incentives, meaning if you have an ecosystem where the sum of the individual parts is actually greater than the whole that's really what you want because the alternative is for example ethereum l1 loses value capture to the l2s but then the l2s don't benefit from one of the other l2s succeeding and so they're in this knife fight against each other and it's this weird incentive game but on solana for example you saw this with a bunch of the recent launches like world xyz where it is in my best interest as just a random rpc provider for world xyz to succeed so i help distribute them okay well so do the wallets so does a foundation so do the dexes and basically the entire ecosystem can incentivize amongst themselves such that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole And so you have those two things.

20:16And then the only thing remaining are soluble problems that require entrepreneurs and builders to push forward. Right. That's all that's needed at that point. And so this is where my framing of what I want Salon to look like is sort of a global Silicon Valley, where to build a business on chain, whether it's about money markets, capitalism, finance, whatever it might be, you just have an internet connection. And you get a Helios plan or whatever, you join super team or whatever you want to do. And you just write code and you build a business and you solve a problem. regardless of your background you can be from bangladesh you can be from estonia it does not matter what your name is where your father was all these different things and you can succeed on pure meritocracy but then you're also helping the entire ecosystem just on top of yourself as well and so that's how i thought about it and i said okay clearly this is a soluble problem because we have the two hardest things already on our side and those things are impossible or highly unlikely to replicate, right?

21:29I don't see any sign of anybody else coming close to replicating those. Now, people will say Hyperliquid and Hyperliquid certainly could. But as it stands today, Hyperliquid is a great exchange and a trading platform. I compare it much more to perhaps a much better Binance than a very successful blockchain, which I don't even think there's been really a successful blockchain, so to speak. It's sort of been changing. The ball has been being thrown around every different cycle. And so, for example, if you look at HyperCore, the blockchain itself, it doesn't really do too much. It's more about using the exchange to get front-end integrators to distribute via builder codes like Phantom and all these different things.

22:20And that's perfectly valid, by the way. But it's a fundamentally different thing than a neutral, scalable blockchain where it's just a different model, which is to say you can obviously. So people at that time would ask me, what does Solana need to do to compete with Hyperliquid? And I would say that's actually the wrong question because Solana doesn't compete with Hyperliquid. What would happen is Solana needs to organize the chain such that builders on top of Solana have everything they need to then compete with Hyperliquid. Right. That's all that's required for Solana because Solana Foundation is certainly not a quant mastermind like Jeff.

23:06right they cannot compete there anyway it's not their core competence totally score competence is scaling blockchains and distributed systems so that's what you focus on and then you get folks like eugene and jerry from phoenix and whoever else going into the future and if you if you if you make the chain such that it has enough liquidity enough builders enough integrations and distribution all these different things then you've shifted the numbers in terms of well somebody could build the next hyperliquid here right that's what you want for an l1 and i don't think the answer to whether a team could compete with hyperliquid on solana last year was yes because the chain didn't work well enough right people most people aren't technical so they don't see the fine details but for example if you were um building a risk engine for example on solana you'd have to take some weird shortcuts such that the fundamental tech wouldn't be as competitive in the in the final stage and so there was a lot of bugs that we ironed out to make it such that okay now it's in a place where a team can come and try to compete with hyperliquid or they don't have to compete with hyperliquid they can just take a different approach maybe they're more maybe they just want to do forex perks or something maybe they have different opinions right but that's the goal of Solana.

24:28And so then the only thing that matters at that point is, first of all, are new startups coming to Solana? Or are they abandoning Solana? And I'm an angel investor, and I get all sorts of deal flow. And at some point, I saw a big uptick in the number of new pitches right so everybody's saying everything is dead uh and this happened the past two cycles but what i look at is one the developer numbers because i own a developer platform and then two is the number of startups because the the trader mind does not see those deals right they don't see oh mert got pitched 50 times this week on like different startups so they have no idea that there is tremendous builder interest and so that is all to say when did you start seeing this uptick maybe a month I would say mid spring maybe I would say mid spring around heading into Miami consensus and where do you think that comes from well people give me shit for this but i think fundamentally so like if you're building a business on chain today if you need to enable any sort of crypto functionality what are your choices okay like seriously what are your choices you're not going to use bitcoin almost certainly not are you gonna use base i mean base was down three times last week and also do you trust coinbase and also is there enough liquidity there is there enough builders there and and you know obviously they'll say yes and and i think they have like a sufficient amount but is that the best place to do it okay so then what else do you have sui maybe but uh it's still quite early and is also going down a lot because scaling is hard as solana found out years ago and okay so then fundamentally you arrive at this thing where it's like okay you have to do on hyperliquid in which case you're pretty limited in the types of things you can build because it's an exchange fundamentally or you have solana where you can build anything it doesn't have to just be an exchange you can you can build payments you can build collectibles you can build literally anything but then you also have this global uh this global movement of tons of founders that are in person and on the internet through super team you have four or five accelerators you have totally personally quote tweeting you yes you have developer infrastructure and and we have a startup program where we give people eight months of free credits so that they can build their businesses.

27:32So you have all these and you have, for example, if you want to look at track record, well, let's look at the last kind of few giant companies in crypto. Axiom, Pumpfun, Magic Eden, Phantom, right? Jupiter. Now, they're not all on Solana, but compared to Solana's market cap versus the others certainly the highest per capita of greatest companies come from solana and so then you look at it that way and you're like okay so solana is very clearly the obvious choice so how come people aren't seeing it this way well it's because you're getting your source from ct and ct is dominated by traders and what do traders know price is now right that's it that's it they don't know about What is done is dead.

28:21Correct. And that's why they're always... My thesis on this is that a trader can always make money by being sort of... By following the wave and maybe seeing certain things earlier than others. But fundamentally, the people who are actually deep down in the ecosystem are the ones who can get enough conviction at$8. Right. And then once you get that, and then CT can have all the big traders making calls and stuff. but fundamentally they're always kind of following what's happening they're a lagging indicator

28:56Mert Mumtaz:right my job is pretty good at that too because i talked to the yes to the guys right so i know i actually tells me hey look into zikash a year and a half ago then he's like hey do you want to do zuko and i'm like yeah let's do it but then zuko is in the middle of the u.s and because i do only in person then we don't do it yes then you come last year in uh september you say hey kevin z cash and i'm like oh yeah no z cash is a good great example of this where the frameworks i just mentioned which is the incentives and the physics and so you look at i looked uh the way i got into it was and i think i said this on the last podcast is a few friends asked me to look at the new scaling roadmap that Zcash has.

29:42And this was maybe late 24, early 25 or something. Price was like, it was out of the top 100 as a coin. And I looked at it and I was like, oh, shit, that is actually quite interesting. This could scale. It does solve a meaningful problem that people are completely sleeping on. And all you need to do is tell the story properly such that other people are aware while executing. So, you know, just like Solana at$8, Zcash at$18 was the exact same thing. Nier was the exact same thing. These are all, I don't do this game of, well, what's everybody talking about? And then maybe let's do some rotation games.

30:22It's more like, does it have the physics? Does it have the incentives? Is it a distressed asset? Is it slept on? Is there asymmetric upside given that basically nobody knows what they're talking about? If the answer is yes, then that's your edge. What's the thesis in a nutshell for Solana in 2026 that would get people excited again?

31:51with with solana the there's one of its problems has been that since it's a general chain so for example with hyperliquid you can very easily make the case that people will always want to speculate and they'll want to trade binance exists coinbase exists robinhood exists but now you can do it in this crypto forward way where there's a token the team makes the revenue in that token or or whatever and then they buy back the token and burn it very simple with solana since you have so many different options it becomes very difficult to meme it in the same way right with zcash it's extremely simple it's private money that's it bitcoin digital gold with solana i say that the the frame from earlier which is that it's a global silicon valley which is to say it's the most usable scalable and battle-tested chain with the highest concentration of products startups and talent okay so then the usual objection is something like so what so maybe even if i agree with you that solana is going to be the most used chain and maybe it'll power tons of things that i use in my everyday financial life why should i invest in the token right and i would say historically that has

33:30been to to to give weight to the critics i think that's a valid criticism because so for example if you ask that question atoli what will he say he'll say something like well the token is for spam preventing spam such that we can ration resources correctly and it's like yes that's technically true but that's not super interesting that's why him to stop tweeting yeah and i do that a lot by the way yeah i know i see you all the time stop tweeting please i had him on i mean actually you did an introduction like i think it was a year plus ago and he was saying i don't i don't really care about the talking yeah stop tweeting stop talking it's like a metallic uh He's like a more pragmatic Vitalik where like they'll just, their brains operate on such different dimensions, which is how they were able to build these systems to begin with, that they don't care, for example, what the dentist's investment thesis is.

34:36We have this meme in crypto where it's like, if you can't sell it to the dentist, then it's too complex. Gavin Wood is the same, by the way. He's like, I don't care. I just want to build the best tech all these guys they have this very complex different brain very abstracted brain and they just say how do I build this thing that helped the world get into a better place not how do I make people rich yeah yeah no and I totally get it because I was like that as well and when you don't need money for example it's very easy to be like that they're all billionaires So I don't care if whatever all I care is that the thing works and it lasts after I'm dead and all these different things.

35:22That's that's really cool. That's what gives me satisfaction. OK, that's great. However, for to actually work, you need to organize capital and capital in terms of humans and money and cash. and so then you need to get into kind of CEO mode into into wartime kind of general mode to be like okay so what is the story here like why should people actually put their money in this thing and so depending on who you ask there will always be different sort of answers for example Ansem will say something like well in a world where all these on on chain you know we're onboarding all these different people and retail attention is back and all these different things like how could the most used chain not benefit from that right and so he'll give a price target or for example i was on his podcast yesterday he said ethereum's all-time high in market cap which is like 600 billion would put solana at like 990 or something and he thinks that's reasonable i think like just by that logic it's probably reasonable but there is no real things that connect the dots.

36:34Okay. So I have a different take on this. So there's a few ways to think about it. Okay. So imagine a world in which Solana, what I'm saying is true. Solana is the most used chain and it's where price discovery happens and you're doing tokenized stocks trading and you're trading Pokemon cards and you're settling stable coin transactional different things. Well, in all those things, you have competition across the big boys, right? Whether that is a Citadel, whether that is Jane Street, whether that is a Singapore Bank, all these different things. And the way, and this already happens in the traditional finance world, where you pay to get edge into market information or do the trade before others.

Read the full transcript

37:22And it's not necessarily front running, but it's more like all these different micro trades that happen to kind of balance prices across the globe. Well, to do that, you do need Sol, right? So I know this firsthand because we run Helios, which is the largest RPC platform, but also it is the largest trading infrastructure on Solana. So for example, if you are Ken Griffin and you're trading against all your competitors and you have a market view you want to express by placing a trade and you don't want to and you want to beat this other team that like Jane Street that that just also got the same information from Bloomberg or something well you need to have some soul and a good amount such that such that you actually do win that trade right it's this very little trade but those add up over the course of many different hours and days.

38:19That's how Robinhood makes money, how Citadel makes money, how most of Wall Street trading firms make money. And so nobody thinks about it this way, but fundamentally Solana is an economy. And the word economy or the study of economics is literally about the allocation of scarce resources. Blockchain is never going to, or block space is never going to be infinite, which means you will need the native currency in order to be able to allocate block space accordingly. And so as more activity happens on block space, and by the way, block space is not a commodity. I hate when people say this when they're like, oh, block space is a commodity.

38:57Is it? Okay. So why don't you go do your trades on Cardano then? It's also a blockchain that has block space. Why aren't you doing it there? Right? Why aren't you doing it on whatever, Aptos? Right? So clearly you can't just switch it, right it is it is a sticky thing liquidity is extremely sticky state is impossible to replicate okay uh ethereum is a good example of this why are there still so many stables on ethereum why there's still activity going on ethereum where it basically is impossible to use for anything over 12 tps right it's because no no it's not a commodity there are things people pay for that they're expecting um from the blockchain given its properties anyway so if it's if there's scarce resources and there's high demand and there's increasing demand elasticity, well, then you need the asset to be able to transact, but also you need the asset to be able to compete, right?

39:50Whether that's fee markets, right? Whether that's people competing to get a new NFT drop or collectible drop, whether that is placing the micron trade before Jane Street, whether that is even on Solana storage costs money, right? Like if you want to be able to store funds, you need to open an account which for an individual user doesn't really matter. It's like 30 cents. But if you're a team, so like a circle, for example, and you need to open a million USDC accounts, that ends up adding up, right? And so you combine that with the fact that if you stake Sol, you get all that back to some extent, right?

40:28You get the MEV back. You get the trading fees back. You get protected from inflation. And then now you combine that with two things, the inflation reduction coming to Solana, which Achilles is pushing forward. And I'm 100 % sure it'll pass. So Solana's inflation will reduce by half much faster than before in half the time. And then we're also now considering adding a burn mechanism in proportion to how much compute you're using on the network. So, OK, you want to use, you want to place a very complex trade. That's OK, great. You have to obviously pay for that, which is same as today, but some percent of that gets burnt.

41:09Right. So it's very simple. It's like the hard problem is building the chain such that it can support activity and have future demand. Right. That's the hard part. Once that part is settled, you have to use the asset in order to be competitive, in order to transact. And how could it be the case that that combined with a few monetary adjustments doesn't result in upside exposure to that entire economy growing, right? Like if you want to buy a house in, let's say Dubai in 2005, right? You're looking at Dubai, you're like, okay, well, there's some stuff here, but like, it's not all there yet. However, in the future, perhaps as you know work goes more global and and people are the governments are more draconian and so some people want tax sheltering and all these different things and now they're investing in the airline all these different things now there's demand and so now the real estate you already own in that place is worth much more than it was right and so i'm still we still need to work on saying this in one sentence, but fundamentally, Solana is going to be the biggest crypto economy at first, and then it's going to be the biggest financial economy.

42:33And if the economy is growing and has good monetary properties, then the currency, there is no world in which it doesn't benefit, right? And there's a few fixes that are being done. right now. Do you know, do you have a timeline more or less on when this inflation change might happen?

43:05Probably. So we're, Solana is adding new governance mechanism. And so we waited for that to go live i would say probably around fall it'll be it'll pass um which is really just like two months out from now um the burn thing is a bit more you'll probably need a bit more work but i would again expect it to be uh like we're not talking on the order of years we're talking like solana moves very fast and then there's of course other things that people don't necessarily think about that are quite important so for example solana's block times today are 400 milliseconds we're actually cutting that in half so it's already the fastest chain but now it'll get twice as fast and we're also increasing the tps so someone just hit an all-time high in transaction activity right so people are looking at the price i'm looking at the things that are actually reality that are there's actually usage and you know who's moving the oil so to speak who's constructing new houses are people immigrating to this place right what does the economy look like and the economy has all the signs of in my view being by far the most powerful crypto economy

44:22i check calchi sometimes to look at what traders think slightly less than 20 of them think that sol is trading above 150 us dollar by the end of the year are we so back are we finally so back i would say

44:49there's a few things outside of solana's control here which it's hard to say how it'll turn out as a result so one is that a lot of the smart people I talk to that are not in crypto, which may be sort of an oxymoron, but some of them think that there will be an AI bubble pop heading into perhaps a Q4 or early next year. Now, if that happens, it doesn't matter if Solana is doing 3 trillion TPS or if it has

45:27whatever the chinese economy building on it or something it does not matter you just people are going to be risked off and so barring macro conditions like that which they're obviously very hard to hedge against or predict properly then i would say yes i do see a very viable path in which Solana makes up another very gradual but very consistent run as it keeps releasing these things like World, which is on-chain prediction markets, which don't require Kalshu or Polymarkets. As Phoenix goes live with on-chain perps, as JTX goes live with on-chain trading, and Backpack continues to list more assets, and Helios Privacy gives institutions and payment providers and confidential DeFi, the tools they need, and wallets improve and all these different things, borrowing and lend, RWA issuance and all these different things continue to consistently budge up.

46:34Then there is a moment in which you look at it from a year from now and you're like, oh shit, that's interesting. I was only focusing on the candles on TradingView and I missed that it is now

46:47Mert Mumtaz:undoubtedly the biggest economy right and so i think that will happen i think it's all about execution from here on out right so you're underwriting really the execution of the ecosystem and one thing i would say is given that there's so many people and so many teams globally that are building on it even if 90 % of them fail, you just need 10 % to succeed wildly, right? For example, you just one pump fund, one collectible crypto collector of crypt, one Axiom, one Jupiter, one Phantom, right? And I'm sure there'll be many. Quick shout out to the legendary team at Jupiter, the DeFi super app. Anything you want to do on chain, from trading to earning yield, you can just use Jupiter.

47:40Personally, I'd recommend getting the Jupyter wallet on either your phone or your laptop. 10 times faster and 10 times cheaper than the competition. You're going to love it. Thank you to the awesome team at Athena for backing today's conversation. Athena is one of the fastest growing projects in DeFi with over$7 billion in stablecoin supply and an average 11 % APY on SUSDE. And importantly, zero DPEGs since launch, which is exactly what you want from a stablecoin. Go check them out by following the link in the description down below. You mentioned Zcash and NIR multiple times. So we have to talk about these projects a bit.

48:21First of all, as simply as possible, can you clear the Zcash FUD that happened a couple of weeks ago? I talked to Tushar from Multicoin Capital. He says it's a non-event. Yes. Can you explain why it's an on-event when I would say most of these people that don't really know what's happening would just say, ah, Zikash is dead and dismiss it? Yeah, so there's actually a few things that happened.

48:56And so what actually happened is there was a bug found, or let me start earlier. In anticipation of AI getting much stronger, what happened is Zcash has a few core teams. It doesn't just have one team. It has the Zotal team. It has the Valar team. It has the Tachyon team. It has Zcash Foundation. It has Shielded Labs. It has several entities. What happened is in anticipation of, for example, Mythos and all these different models continuing to get better, it was decided that, look, we need to really ramp up security, auditing, and finding these things in the open before any bad actor can find them with these advanced tools that are going to come out.

49:47And so that's what they did. So everybody started working with many security firms, auditing, some of them had access to much later frontier models and all these different things. And one of them, a very established security researcher that is top three person most familiar with Zcash. so it wasn't a random vibe coded thing that some guy on the internet just found now people will say of course well i was able to replicate this bug that he found was just clawed and it's like you already knew where to look because you already found it if you started from scratch good luck right good luck understanding the zk arithmetic circuits which i don't even understand okay so they found a bug they then patched the bug and with a security patch these things for obvious reasons have to be done in a way to move fast, but also not disclose too much information in case there's a leak.

50:47There's a standard practice for every blockchain, every security team. So it was patched. And then what happened is that some of the block explorers didn't update their nodes, right? Because it's a global network. And so everybody has different time zones, and all these different things. And then a few people who really hated seeing Zcash rise for several understandable reasons, mostly of being sidelined, started saying things like, oh, Zcash is down. And so then I woke up and I'm like, oh my God, what the fuck is this? And then I open up my wallet and I do a transaction, goes through. I look at the node, I look at the mining stats, everything is live.

51:31What's happened is like a few of the block explorers just didn't update their nodes yet. So they're not. So the block explorer itself is not updated, but the chain is working fine. And so that starts going viral. A little Zcash is down, Zcash is down. And I'm like, oh, Jesus Christ. It's like Solana back in the day, where it's just a bunch of trolls just saying shit to milk a few Elon bucks. Anyway. And at that point, Josh from Zoto, who's the CEO, disclosed that, hey, we found a security thing. We patched it. funds are safe all these different things so i thought that was the end of it okay and then uh zuko tweeted basically what josh said but again and for whatever reason zuko's post just people still think zuko is like the founder right yeah but like first of all zcash has many founders.

52:24It's not like Zuko's role in Zcash is nowhere comparable to Vitalik's in Ethereum or Trolley's in Solana. It's not even close, right? But anyway, that's the actual perception that they have. Fair enough. Anyway, so then people then are like, wait a minute. So So this bug was a counterfeiting bug, which in theory implies that you can mint shielded notes in one pool, the orchard pool. And you can just print in that pool specifically. Now, obviously, nobody and this is something I think is valid criticism. I think people, when they invest in Zcash, didn't actually understand what private money means.

53:16right if the money is private that by definition means it's private meaning there are some trade offs you make in supply versus auditability right and i've had this chat on twitter like six seven times in the past year so i thought people were aware but obviously nobody follows me right so the the steel man here is if somebody exploited that bug we technically cannot know unless the attacker moves out more funds than went in. But then people don't know how this works. And so they start saying things like, well, you can print infinite Zcash. No, you can't. You cannot print infinite Zcash because there's a thing called a turnstile, which is to say, assume this coffee cup is the orchard pool.

54:04What went in, which is the liquid coffee, is the only thing that can come out. You can't just print more coffee. now what you can do is if you print notes inside the coffee or inside the orchard pool then you can take it out and trigger the turnstile but the other people haven't been able to withdraw and so you make that pool insolvent now for many different sorts of heuristics i'm a 99 confident that didn't happen because you know the price went up price went down the shielded pool kept increasing in size, which would not happen if somebody was draining it the whole time, right? Like, how are you overcoming this?

54:47And then people will say something like, well, they were trying to hide their tracks. And then, you know, you had like, retarded posts by like Sisyphus saying things like, oh, well, like, you can just pay KOLs with infinite money. And like, they can just sell and make infinite money. And it's like, so how's the price going up then? Is there infinite buying pressure as well as infinite selling pressure? Like, how does this work. It doesn't. Anyway, so that's kind of what happened. Now, to prove that there was no exploit, what's happening is there's an upgrade called Ironwood, which will migrate those funds through interaction.

55:22So when you send money on your Zcash wallet, it'll actually migrate it to Ironwood. And once the funds are migrated, you'll be sure that the turnstile wasn't triggered and And so no exploit had happened. That's only half the story. The much more important part here is that with AI, the likelihood of bugs being exploited is going to go up, right? You've already been seeing this this whole year. Drift got hacked and there's been like 12 DeFi hacks and people are saying DeFi is dead forever. And I wrote a piece on this and that's actually completely incorrect.

56:06The thing to understand here is that crypto has been built sort of like consumer software, right? There's two ways to build software, serious and unserious. The unserious is something like, for example, Facebook. You build Facebook and, you know, you add features for people following their friends and chatting with them and whatever. And if you wrote a bug, so what? Facebook can just patch that bug instantly. Nobody's going to lose money because of this. Now consider something like space flight or pacemakers. You cannot write bugs, right? Because if you write bugs, either somebody dies or billions of dollars are lost.

56:51And crypto has been built, a large part of it at least, has been built using the Facebook approach versus the space flight approach. And with AI, that just won't cut it anymore. And so what you need to do is this thing we call formal verification, for example. So what Zcash is getting, and by the way, as of this conversation, it already has been formally verified, right? The Ironwood and the Orchard Pool have actually been formally verified. They've also been audited using Mythos and the latest GPT model to show that mathematically speaking, which is the highest possible guarantee you can get in software that the same class of bugs cannot exist again right that's a very very important claim because it gives you mathematical certainty that this thing is completely provably sound right it's the same thing that spaceflight engineers use to build spaceships and space software and biomedical stuff right and so this what's what what's this what this has done is bullet made zcash much more anti-fragile than before in the sense that now while there's all these other bugs lurking in the shadows and all these different ecosystems and all these different smart contracts this is the ecosystem that took all of its resources and did the extremely difficult work of proving mathematically, extremely cumbersome process, by the way, which AI now actually helps simplify, to show that mathematically speaking, this functions exactly as specified, and you mathematically cannot get a better guarantee than that, right?

58:39And fundamentally, this is how all of crypto So we'll need to evolve, right? In a world where AI is everywhere and there's exploits happening all over the place, you want spaceflight guarantees on the things that store your funds. And you should, right? Because it's the same thing. You launch a spaceship and it crashes. There is no turning it back. Everybody's dead. With crypto, it's kind of the same thing where you put a billion dollars in there. Well, if it's gone, you might as well just die. Right. Like, so it has to be that. And Zcash is doing that. Right. And all serious teams in crypto will have to do that.

59:22Ten thousand, ten thousand, trillions. You like to say that? What's the potential time for Zcash? So people like to say that Zcash, a good comparable or a good target is 10 % of Bitcoin. right and currently it's nowhere near that right zcash is smaller than dogecoin it's smaller than tron smaller than pretty much anything in the top 10 i think that 10 is a very conservative target i think once you get people used to this idea of formal verification and provable soundness then why would you not want your bitcoin to be private What do you gain in a world where you have mathematical guarantees of supply?

1:00:12What do you gain by simply not having the option to shield your funds? Right? Is that it's strictly inferior technologically speaking. And so then it becomes a matter of, can we tell the story effectively enough? Are other wallets and payments providers and all these different guys building and executing enough? Is the chain scaling enough? Are the miners decentralizing enough such that it can start to make way towards Bitcoin's market cap? But I think so like Ansem will say something like 10 % of Bitcoin is my target. But I'll say that's a good first target. But once it gets to 10%, then you have kind of this momentum, this liquidity and all this attention.

1:01:05to then make people stop and think, wait a minute, why wouldn't I want my Bitcoin to be private, right? That's a fundamental property of one, fungibility, because if a coin has history, then it's not fungible. It can be frozen. See the Canadian truckers. Or it can't be like frozen, but you can just surveil where it goes forever. But two, why would you want to disclose your positions to people who just should not know them? Like, what is the sense in this? There is no sense, right? Right. Once the communists are in charge. Right. And we say like I say, the antidote to AOC is ZEC. Right. And you're seeing this all over the world right now.

1:01:43I don't have to talk to probably your audience about how much wealth seizures and taxes and all these different things. And, you know, big father, big brother kind of just coming in on all sides. So there is, in my view, almost zero. And by the way, Zcash, you can keep it transparent like Bitcoin if you want. Sure. I'm not sure why you would, but you can. And so I think there'll be a lot of work required to kind of convince other people of this and actually ship and prove this. And there's, you know, quantum recoverability is coming. Quantum proofing is coming. Like a 5x, 10x scale upgrade is coming.

1:02:24Formal verification. There's a new pool that will be even simpler than the current pool in terms of mathematical proving so there's basically several orders of magnitude and risk reduction and so you have all these things and you have these new wallets and the exchanges and all these different guys kind of integrating it and it's like this is the thing that brings crypto back its ideals right private unsolvable money a swiss vault on the internet that gives sovereignty and liberty to individuals who want it you don't have to want it that's fine nobody's forcing you to buy this nobody's forcing you to hold your coins in this but if you do then this works and the ten thousand dollar i mean obviously round number is a big number but this is if zcash was worth 10 of bitcoin today more or less well currently it's at i think six to seven billion market cap and i think it's about 450 in in price or something so uh and bitcoin is at like what uh 1.5 trillion, so 150 billion.

1:03:30So a 10x for Zcash would be 70 billion, which would mean 4 ,000. Yeah, so that comes to around that range. So if you look at the market cap of what's above it and how small it is, and compared to like Ethereum all-time highs or some other thing, I think it's pretty undervalued. I think it's a clear thing that needs to exist. And you don't have to, like you can, it's super functional. Like what you can do is you store your funds on your Zcash wallet, like Zodal or Visor. And let's say this person only accepts USDC on Solana. Okay, fine. You click pay. You select Solana USDC as a currency. That's it.

1:04:15Nobody knows where that money came from. But you just paid for it on a different chain in private. it it's composable using near settles on solana using zcash's privacy at the core and it's just awesome right like you're using all these different these these minds of giants and the words of giants to actually do p2p internet unstoppable money you just mentioned near yes i don't hold any near coin oh no what am i failing to understand you said before Solana at$8 Zeke at$18 and then you said Nier was it too I think Nier is so I don't think Nier is there today but I do think Nier has a lot of potential so

1:05:11and I'm still forming my thesis around this it's not as high of a conviction play that I have with Zeke Asch and Solana But first of all, what are the set of things that you want to look at when you're evaluating a project? Well, you want to look at the pedigree and the determination and the resourcefulness of the founders. Well, Ilya is an absolute monster, right? Ilya is the only guy I know in all of crypto that can go head to head with Anatoly in a technical battle. And he used to do this, by the way. There's all sorts of YouTube clips of them doing this. He's a very smart guy, right? Both Ukrainian, both Slavic kind of, they really kind of have that like old trauma where they're like, we're going to win.

1:05:58It's like no bullshit, kind of all these different things. He's also one of the authors of the LLM paper, right? All that AI that you use today. Jess, who was one of the authors of the work that made it possible? It was Ilya. Very, very smart guy. now everyone knows ilia but then he also has a bunch of co-founders and and all these different guys um you know bowen and alex and and when you look at on paper near actually also scales it also has a very interesting edge in ai given one it's scale but two obviously ilia's knowledge And he saw most of this like intense stuff and agentic stuff really before most people in my view.

1:06:47So I used to talk to him at, you know, different parties and whatnot. And I'd be like, dude, shut the hell up. What are you talking about AI? Like whatever. It's just a shitty chat interface, whatever. And he would just tell me, no, no, that's not true. Like you can use it for all sorts of different things. And I just completely faded him. And this is like 2024. And then I was like, oh, shit. Okay. He was actually, I probably should have trusted the author of the fucking paper. Maybe. Yeah. And so then I'm looking at like, OK, what do I need to transact in Zcash? What do I need to list Zcash on Solana?

1:07:21What do I need to have like a truly on-chain KYC-less exchange for spot that's across chains and that actually scales? And that has interesting economics and has like a sharding architecture, which is Ethereum's original vision, by the way. Right. Which Ethereum abandoned, but Nier actually did it. well it's near right um and so i think they have to be clear i think they have a good amount of things to iron out so it's a very high risk play because it depends on them actually ironing those things out but if you look at crypto as a whole it is one of the only things that stands out to me for how undervalued it is compared to the things above it now you might also see the things above it are overvalued okay sure but like you really you only have so many tools as an investor right and so that's why that's where the risk is but if i look at crypto today what are the things that are actually used okay solana ethereum bitcoin zcash to an extent it's still getting there hyperliquid obviously and then the other one is near.

1:08:35Right. And they're in my view, they're kind of just getting started. And so I don't know how it'll play out. I don't have like a huge position or anything like this. But it is hard to see how some project with that many things going forward in terms of team and direction and the fundamentals, right? What did I mention? I mentioned physics and incentives. Well, they have both of those. So now it's about can they attract builders to help them solve the soluble problems? Teams like Helios, for example. We're not on it in case Toli is watching. But can they get these other teams to come and build businesses on top of it?

1:09:22And I think that's a very doable job than helping bootstrap the 50th L2. Thank you so much Mert for doing this. Third time on When Shift Happens. Third time amazing episode. I loved it. And as I said before, this job is amazing. I can get all the alpha, sometimes a bit late, but still earlier than most people. And that's what we try to do then to put this out there without talking about price target and all that stuff. So people who are there doing bear market can just watch and build conviction thank you so much yes if you're building a business in crypto shoot me a dm on twitter at mert also good stuff nice i go go and buy some near now i mean i think it's just fundamentally

1:10:18asymmetric like there's not too much downside because like what could happen it could reduce in price to half okay so you lost half that money sure but what's the upside is the upside just a 2x i don't think so because look at his market cap it's tiny look at what's above it look at the sheer amount of things like when i work with them and i guess i didn't mention this but i should have so i work with um due to my role as both an investor but also you know a loud person but also the CEO of a company. I work with a lot of teams. I work with hundreds of teams and, you know, with the Aslana Foundation or whatever foundation or whatever big company.

1:11:02Well, when I work with the near guys, I'm like, these guys are fucking pros. They're in there like a Navy SEAL team. They know what they want. They have deliverables. They work with you and then it gets done, right? Just operational excellence. That's the biggest alpha actually. As a builder, when you have a company, you work with others. For us, it was as simply as do invoices get paid on time, all that kind of stuff. Like, is there like some, is it like a, you can feel very good if it's a complete mess on the other side or not, right? Or people are just like, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, organized.

1:11:37And I think one of the biggest, I find it so simple, but it's this, when you interact with these teams, what do you see? That was amazing. Thank you so much, Mert. Thanks for having me. From the publisher

Mert Mumtaz, co-founder and CEO of Helius, breaks down why he sees Solana and Zcash as two of crypto's most undervalued bets heading into 2026, using his "physics and incentives" framework to separate real conviction from trader noise.

He also debunks the recent Zcash security scare, explains why AI is forcing crypto toward "spaceflight-level" security standards, and weighs in on Near's high-upside, low-conviction potential.
