In short

Scott Melker (Wolf of All Streets) argues that in 2026+ you can’t “get rich” via crypto luck or constant trading; the practical path is long-term, boring Bitcoin investing plus selective exposure to a few other large assets.

Guest backgrounds

No other guest is clearly identified; the episode is primarily Melker speaking in an interview format.

Key claims

Most people won’t make it in crypto because they don’t learn from mistakes. Trading is stressful and often leads to emotional “sell to buy lower” behavior. Bitcoin is positioned as the simplest, most durable wealth store and the mainstream gateway (“Bitcoin and chill”). Many altcoins failed due to broken tokenomics (value not accruing to token holders). Yield strategies are risky; DeFi hacks and broad AI/bad-actor attack surfaces make yield capital riskier.

Notable examples

Melker’s early DJ-to-crypto timeline (late 2016/early 2017 alt seasons/ICOs). He cites Voyager’s collapse as part of his yield skepticism. He references MicroStrategy’s early Bitcoin purchases and says his first Michael Saylor interview (Sept/Oct 2020) was unexpectedly impactful. He also mentions his media shift toward institutional/ETF-focused audiences and a Yahoo Finance daily crypto show.

0:00What's possible if you work hard enough and never give up in the crypto industry? I would love to say that everybody's going to make it. We're all going to make it. But no, most people are idiots and don't learn from their mistakes. So most people are not going to make it. If I was just a guy still trying to trade crypto assets in the trenches or something, I would not have made it. Do you think it's possible in 2026 and beyond to make it in crypto without building a business? Yeah. How? Bitcoin doesn't. Scott Melker, host of The Wolf of All Streets.

0:27Scott Melker:A leading crypto podcast reaching investors worldwide. He's a former professional DJ turned full-time market obsessive. Making digital asset markets more accessible. I think it's a superior way to store wealth. When you know what you know about the central banks and the United States government and the way money is created, all of a sudden that volatility doesn't feel like a problem. You don't feel like you're speculating. I don't need to go into the meme coin casino to try to figure out what the next thing is. It's like, you know, Netflix and chill, just Bitcoin and chill. Just buy some Bitcoin and hang out.

0:56It's not that hard. What's your goal with your media company? My goal has for a very long time been the same, and that is to bring Bitcoin to the mainstream. I really believe with deep conviction that people should own Bitcoin. I'm not going to tell them what price to buy it at, but I really think it's the most important financial asset ever created. What's the biggest myth that you want to help us debunk today about investing that you learned through your career and also through all the interviews you've made? I think the biggest myth is that you... Hi everyone. This is the little bit that I know none of you like that can help us make a huge difference for this show and we want to take it next.

1:3271 % of the people who regularly watch When Shift Happens have not subscribed and so all I'd ask you if you want to make a huge difference is the following. If you've seen this show before and you like it, help me, help my team, hit the subscribe button and we'll continue to build this show for you. Thank you. it's ran who put us in touch oh yeah a long time ago and he said oh man she's ghosting me also now all the time that's she's you know they come around when they need something which is fine like you know if he wants to talk about a certain topic a lot you'll see he like does everything for two weeks you know like you'll talk about strc yeah you were saying before about dressing up i when i started my first company at 22 i was saying i want to start a business because I don't want to dress up, right?

2:18Because I did two internships in my life before and I had this suit and I was like, I can't wear this shit. But I ended up having to go and sell was business intelligence services, data analytics services. To go and sell, I had to dress up. I was like, fuck, my goal of being an entrepreneur with a hoodie is not working, right? And so I did that for a few years. And since I'm in crypto, I'm like, I'm not going to dress up anymore. I'm just going to have my Zara t-shirt. Yeah, like a tuxedo t-shirt. A t-shirt that's a tuxedo. How are you doing? Good. Happy? I'm always happy and optimistic. I see you're always very optimistic.

2:55It's my permanent state. I don't really see the point in being a pessimist. Where does this come from to be hyper-optimistic all the time? I just feel like things always work out. Optimists always win with time. Just like bulls always win with time in markets. If you want to be a bear, you have to have exceptional timing and you're only going to be right for a little while. And even after you're right, you're going to look like an asshole when you're finally wrong because markets only go up and to the right. And I feel like life only generally improves. Would you rather be a king in the medieval times or like a normal guy with a job in 2026 with healthcare and antibiotics, air conditioning and plumbing?

3:38So I just feel like the evolution of things is always in a positive direction. Is there something in your life that actually didn't go as planned and never really became better? And did you have to abandon at some point? I mean, a million things. I think I've failed at most things that I've tried. And the things that you succeed at stand out for everybody. But sort of the old joke, it's like it takes 30 years to become an overnight success or whatever it is, right? And everybody says you're lucky and they don't see all the failures that you had the entire time. but I started countless little businesses and ideas that lasted for a month or two months, complete failure.

4:18I had businesses that were moderately successful but never really took off. I tried a lot of things in my music career that were horrid failures that I thought would be extremely successful. A song you make that you think is going to be a hit, you spend all this money and energy on, it doesn't even make the light of day. It's endless. But I view all of it is sort of you know falling forward advance the puck that's all that really matters you know who are you uh i'm just a guy honestly people always ask that it's like really funny they're like wolf of all streets such an egotistical name i'm like it was a joke you know i'm just i'm just a guy uh who you know i'm a guy with adhd like growing up was doing everything all the time and i've always been the one when i find something that's worth focusing on i can kind of actually get hyper-focused on it and it just becomes my thing for that period until the next thing.

5:13But I think at the core, like I said, I'm just a pretty optimistic guy. I love people. I love having conversations. So this job that we have here is the ultimate, the best job in the world. It's like, people ask me, they're like, don't you get exhausted talking? I'm like, no, it's like getting to go to college, but A, you get paid for it instead of paying, which is amazing. but B you get to have a one-on-one with the most brilliant professor in his field for an hour and for some reason they'll answer any question you have and then you move on to the next class right who wouldn't want that opportunity so I think it's just incredible I was actually talking about that with Pomp saying it makes no sense like I was I was telling him like because he he understood podcasting fairly enough I think 2019 or 2018 yeah which is like before COVID and then during COVID like that's where like a bunch of podcaster actually took off a lot.

6:04But I was saying, if you actually think about it, you have three cameras, sometimes more. You have two mics. You have a chair, two tables. And for some reason, this thing enables you to talk. If it's well done, compounded over time, et cetera, you can talk to anyone. Literally anyone. Literally, within a couple of months, a couple of years, you can get to the top, which makes no sense. It does, though. It's like anything else. It compounds. hey like you said but all you need is the one person that you interview that says yes to give you the credibility to get all of the other people and at the end of the day people just love to hear themselves talk it's an ego game for sure and i don't listen i don't i don't i don't say that in a negative way at all but you know as much as you and i love to sit and ask the questions and get the education people love that opportunity to teach you that thing that they're so passionate about it or to have a conversation about it.

7:00You were a DJ before doing this crypto media stuff. There's actually something with DJs and crypto. I used to DJ for five years from 16 to 21 in Switzerland, in Spain, in Croatia. And I noticed a bunch of the DJs whose music I was playing 16 or 17 years ago were also pretty early in crypto, 2017, 18, 19, 20. You were one of them too. what's the deal with DJs that went down the crypto rabbit hole like fairly early? It's because DJs are DGNs by nature. For some reason, I think you have a job that's primarily at night and there's a lot of free time during the day and you're sitting on cash from the night before and for me it was because trading culture was big among DJs that I knew and crypto just happened to be the flavor of the month at that time.

7:54I got in late 2016, early 2017, and that was the first real iteration of alt seasons and ICOs. And so one guy would do it and he'd be like, I bought Bitcoin and I sent it to this place, Bittrex, and I bought this thing called the Ripples, right? Because you had to pluralize it because you didn't know how to say Ethereum's and Ripple's shares of Ethereum, you know, like nobody had any idea. and people were just making a lot of money. So it got around that you could kind of go speculate in this thing. That's how I found it. And I don't know, I think for me also trading, which is how I started, for some reason clicked in my brain the same way music production did.

8:32Like charting and drawing lines, I could do it endlessly and it kind of had this formulaic feel to it the same way that being in Logic or Ableton or Pro Tools did. I don't know how to explain it, but it's true. So I think there's just a familiarity there. It's still a creative pursuit. Did you make any money actually trading? Or you realized, oh, actually you fell down the rabbit hole. Okay, I come for the ups and downs and all this potential money I can make. But then I start to understand what's happening and what's the potential of this thing. And then I want to build something and become part of this industry.

9:08I made a lot of money trading, but it was mostly because I had lucky timing. So first of all, you would think you were making money trading and then you would look at your Bitcoin balance and realize that all you had to do was hold Bitcoin and it would have gone up more, but you were still making money. But trading's not for me, which is funny because I built my entire career in crypto on trading for those first few years. And not that I wasn't good at it, but I do not have the brain for 24-7, 365 crypto. I've got a family and kids and things to do other than stare at charts. And it becomes a real impediment, I think, on life.

9:44It's very stressful. You don't know if you're going to do well or poorly the next day. So I think you have to be really uniquely built for it. And I think for me that lasted for a very short period of time. What's the moment you said, I need to go all in and do something more than trading in crypto? You know, there was no moment. So people asked me that question. For me, everything that happens is always kind of organic and natural. And that's how it was for me. You know, I was trading. so I started talking on Twitter about my trades and all the people who followed me for music for all those years unfollowed me.

10:18So I lost half my followers. What the hell are you talking about? The script I think. But then I think I had enough of a base of people who were interested in it from music and I had the blue check back when blue checks mattered. It was like 2010 or 11 I got a blue check for music. And for whatever reason I think that used to give you this credibility that you were like a real important person or something. So for whatever reason, I think people assumed I had that blue check from crypto, which I didn't. And I started following and believed that I was an expert of some sort. But for me, it was like a tweet back then.

10:56You couldn't write an article or a long thread. You had a short tweet. That wasn't enough. So I was like, I'm going to write a newsletter, a free newsletter. I would do that twice a week. And then it was like, I could do a little more. So that became daily. and then someone said launch a podcast I said okay I'll do a podcast once a week and then I was like I'm bored doing it once a week so let me try to launch a YouTube channel I'll do that twice a week and then eventually just the nature of how I am I'm now working 18 hours a day in this one industry that I never had an intention to be working 18 hours a day in and I just I have a very hard time saying no to new things working 18 hours a day with your wife not now but I think that's how it was for a long time.

11:36I'm pretty good actually now at compressing that time. But yeah, I mean, it's a lot. It can be a lot. Crypto never slips, but neither do opportunities in traditional markets. Variational is bridging both worlds with 50 plus new market listings every month, giving you access to stocks, commodities, indices, and more, all through a modern trading platform. Because sometimes the biggest alpha isn't finding a new coin. It's remembering the rest of the world's markets exist. Big thanks to my friends at Bitwise Asset Management for backing today's conversation. Bitwise is a global crypto asset manager with more than$11 billion in client assets and more than 70 crypto solutions.

12:22That includes ETFs, index funds, SMAs, custom option strategies, staking, vaults, and more. However you want to invest in crypto, the experts at Bitwise have you covered. Is crypto still relevant in 2026? It's more relevant than ever. It's just that a lot. Well, because now it's so funny. People are so bearish on it when it's finally actually happening. It's absurd. Right. I think they're bearish because the thing they hold and believed in went down. But that means that you were only here for speculation, not for crypto in the first place. And I don't think that that's a criticism. It's just you have to understand yourself and know why you bought what you did or why you believed in it.

13:07It's kind of the joke. Like you start as a trader and then you lift your stop loss when it's going against you because emotionally you don't want to lose a trade. Then you become an investor because now you're down so bad. Then you become a passionate community member. And forever you're a part of like the Link Army or the XRP Army or whatever it is or Bitcoin. It doesn't matter. Non-exclusive to any asset. But right now is when it's all actually happening.

13:33But does that mean that crypto goes higher in the future? Because as we've seen, there can be a big disconnect between what people hold, tokens, and the fundamentals and how it's actually difficult to invest in most of these things that are actually happening. Well, it turns out most things didn't need tokens. and those that maybe did need tokens didn't properly structure their tokenomics so that the value actually accrued to the tokens. So basically you just had a bunch of lottery tickets with the name of a project on them and the project could be making money but you weren't. Or their shareholders in some of the cases could be making money and the value didn't accrue to the token.

14:12So I think it was structurally broken and that was hard to see at the time when things were actually going up because the price going up convinced you that there had to be something fundamentally there. But that means that the next iterations of these things will be built in a way that have more value accrual to the actual token and utility and to the holders. And maybe for better or worse, it'll look more like shares in a public company. But crypto is not dead, it's just changing. What do you do personally? I mean, you have a thriving business, so you're indirectly benefiting from crypto, doing, I mean, having good fundamentals and things happening in crypto, because there is things to talk about and there's money to be made as a business.

14:57But what most people who are listening to you or even to us want to know is how can I participate in this thing if I have a normal job and I don't want to build a business. I want to invest. But it turns out that most of these assets are uninvestable. I think you just buy Bitcoin and go about your life. And listen, I've never been a Bitcoin maxi. It's funny. I've managed to thread a very rare needle where Bitcoiners call me a shit coiner and shit coiners call me a Bitcoin maxi. It's a very, very rare place to be that I can be right in the middle. But I think that that's the most simple way. And then you'll find your way falling down the rabbit hole in different directions as you become more passionate about it.

15:42But But I feel like that should still be the gateway if you're going to go any deeper is you have a life, you have a job, take some of that cash flow because you know that inflation is real and that money printing is real and just buy some Bitcoin, see how it performs, give it some time and you'll probably end up further down other corners. But like most people come into crypto through Doge in that cycle or NFTs in that cycle or Or meme coins, the Trump token, and that cycle. None of those things are lasting, right? What do you do every month with the money you make? I buy Bitcoin. Just Bitcoin.

16:21Okay, so I run an algorithm. Okay. But it's not a trading algorithm. It's called ArchPublic. I've been working, like I'm an equity holder in it, but I've been doing it very publicly for quite a long time. And it basically just algorithmically buys the dip better. So if you want to buy Bitcoin and buy Ethereum, buy Solana, you'll get the best price in that four hours, the best price in that day, or the best price in that week. So you end up beating normal dollar cost averaging. So it's dollar cost averaging smart, right? And so basically I'm at like 80 % Bitcoin, 10 % ETH, 10 % Solana is effectively how it shakes out.

16:55Right now I can't imagine what else I would possibly be interested in buying. But these are things, right, if I'm buying them as investments, I'm not trading. So those three things have institutional bids, they have institutional adoption. And I didn't sign up to be like on riding with, you know, JP Morgan. But it is what it is, right? And that's where the, I think we have an industry right now of have and have nots. We either have institutional adoption and interest and that wall of money has access or your coin number 75 on coin market cap and good luck. So your focus is on generating cash flow through businesses and then saying, I will only buy crypto assets that I think I can hold forever?

17:38For a very long time. Ethereum and Solana, I love them. Not in the same way. I think there's Bitcoin and there's everything else. I actually utilize a yield generating strategy with those where it buys dips and sells rips and creates cash flow and puts more money into Bitcoin. That's the kind of strategy that I have running. But I do want to hold those assets for a very long time but I can't call them forever assets. I think there's too much disruption in new layer ones and tech that you can't make the claim that they'll be successful forever. Bitcoin has bridged the gap. But yeah, that's how I think people should approach Bitcoin.

18:20You take money that you make. This is the problem I had with Bitcoin treasury companies, which I was very loud about in the beginning. You can't beat Bitcoin by buying Bitcoin. You need to do some kind of weird magic or financial engineering to figure that out, you should do exactly what people do, what we tell people to do. Take 10 % of your money and put it into Bitcoin. If every cash-flowing business did that, we would have incredible Bitcoin treasury companies that wouldn't be a drag on the market.

18:50How do you form your opinions? For example, now you're saying Bitcoin. Is it through experience? Is it because you're talking to all these people and you realize that's what all these people are doing? Or do you actually think that your own opinion is not that much influenced by the people you talk to? It's even more conservative. My opinion is definitely influenced by people I talk to. Going back to the beginning of the conversation, it's because I talk to really smart people and I take it as an education. I'm a strong believer in the idea of strong opinions loosely held. So I don't have 100 % conviction in anything.

19:29I'm a skeptic. And if I'm presented with new and superior information, I have no problem being very publicly wrong and changing my opinion and saying I was wrong and now this is the thing. So I can't say that I will fundamentally stay this way forever or that this is the exact view that I will have, but most of it is from my experience. If I had just bought the thing I actually believed in the most, I would be in a much better situation than I am now. It's very simple. what about what about yield um it's not a four-letter word anymore uh i was one of voyager's top creditors so that's why i'm asking for the yield trap as much as i mean i think we all got like massively fucked like a couple of years ago and we have crazy ptsd about all these yield stuff well i think maybe a bit too much sometimes yeah i think um it depends on where the yield's coming from and what the product is and what the disclosures are and the risk.

20:25I don't see how you can look at what happened in DeFi with all the hacks in North Korea. And it's like a hack every two days over the past year. I mean, these numbers are not for dispute. And listen, there was 10, 12,$14 billion of capital flight from platforms that were largely unaffected just because of a fear that DeFi was broken. I think that the attack surface right now with bad actors and AI is so broad that it's very hard to want to put capital at risk to earn yield. So it depends on where the yield's coming from, how transparent it is, and your risk tolerance. What's possible if you work hard enough and never give up in the crypto industry?

21:12Well, it depends on who you are. Well, let's take you as an example. A previous DJ. I would love to say that everybody's going to make it. we're all going to make it. But no, most people are idiots and don't learn from their mistakes. So most people are not going to make it. Unfortunately, I'm not saying that that makes me special or anything. I happen to be passionate about it in a way that I could carve out a business. But if I was just a guy still trying to trade crypto assets in the trenches or something, I would not have made it. Do you think it's possible in 2026 and beyond to make it in crypto without building a business.

21:46Yeah. How? Buy Bitcoin. Do you believe that Bitcoin will trade at much higher prices than it is now? I do. That's why I buy Bitcoin every month. Right. So why, you know, it doesn't have to be that. I think that what shocks people is the simplest answer is the correct one. And it's never changed. People are always trying to find a better play to everything, right? But it's the same. It was the same if you look at tech stocks, right? Apple, a long time ago, it's like, okay, this one is too big already. Actually, I think it's Chamath Palipati, he was talking about Bitcoin since a long time and saying Bitcoin.

22:27And he was giving other examples. He was saying, you buy Apple, you buy the category leader, you don't buy the number two. It's counterintuitive, but that's how it works, right? Yeah, and at one point, I think he owned like 5 % of the Bitcoin supply or something absurd. I don't remember what the number was. But astounding. But yeah, I think Bitcoin doesn't get you rich quick and most people come to get rich quick, but it definitely lets you get poor or avoid getting poor slow, right, from inflation. So listen, I mean, anybody, almost anyone, I challenge you to go back and do the math on anything you've put into crypto.

23:06If you had just bought Bitcoin with every one of those purchases and sat on it, where you'd be? This is a tough one. Because if you've been here since 2017, you were buying it to$3 ,000,$4 ,000,$5 ,000. And even if you went all the way up and back to$3 ,000 and back to$126 ,000, you're still probably very happy with those purchases. I made this calculation many times, actually. Yeah, really. It's like the meme of the guy in the mirror pointing at himself. You're fine. You're good. You didn't do that.

23:41how do you take a crypto media business to the next level uh for me i think that i made a very conscious decision a few years ago part of it from the ptsd of what happened in the past um that i wanted to focus pretty heavily on the bridge between crypto and tradfi or the mainstream adoption of it but primarily on the institutional level or at least that's where i i believe that things were headed. And I think it was pretty early to having high conviction that that was going to happen. And so I really converted most of my content with that in mind. It started becoming very interview based. A lot of people from institutions that were crossing over bigger names in the crypto space, but they were focusing on institutions and really trying to focus there.

24:34So my audience kind of turned over from 20 something DGN traders. Now my audience are guys like me with kids who want to invest some of their money in Bitcoin, but have jobs and large portfolios and are buying ETFs. I meet them every day. And so for me, I think directionally I was in a good place and now I can kind of capitalize on having that conviction. So like I have the Yahoo show now, you know, On Yahoo Finance, to my knowledge, is the first and only daily crypto show on a mainstream network. I mean, they're three times bigger than CNBC. I don't think people realize it because it's Yahoo.

25:15How does a show like that happen? They came to me, actually. And I'd been on Yahoo as a guest many, many times. I'll actually tell you. So one of the producers, I was pitched by basically the head of content who's new at Yahoo. and they're kind of looking to build a more personality-based roster. I think that's a little less guys in suits reporting the news, a little more personality and hot takes. That's why you dress like that. Yes. I don't dress like this on my own show. On my own show, I'm in a T-shirt, right? Thank you for dressing up for this podcast. I did this for you. and uh and um you know we kind of got it to a point where it made sense for for both of us to do it uh but to me that's the answer so now like i have a show there i own the show right so it's my own property um and i can leverage that to create new shows that exist hopefully on mainstream media and build a brand around that and so that that's the we're only you know i'm not too deep into doing this, but that's the plan.

26:24I really understand on the business side how much it makes sense. And you said a few years ago you understood that and now it makes even more sense and probably very lucrative. How do you not get bored? Because it's a more kind of boring side of crypto. It's less exciting than all the kind of crazy shit that's left and right that ends up losing people. But all that other stuff is fun in the same way that playing Russian roulette is fun. it was really exciting until the bullet goes off right and so like first of all i have no conviction in any of that stuff anymore and i did so the my my like what i was guilty of was being an idiot in those early cycles i believed that this hundred projects were all going to go up forever and people followed me and of course you know they lose money and i lost more than anyone but you know that does not an excuse for it i was wrong you know so i i think that uh it's not that i'm taking the safe play.

27:17I just think that, first of all, we can all scream at the same echo chamber, but the echo chamber is not growing. It's the same people that have been here for 10 years. Absolutely. So what's the point of me talking to them? Not saying I don't want those people to listen. They do to some degree, but I want the new guy who's thinking about it. This guy who's got a portfolio, where does Bitcoin fit into this? Why should I care? Go orange pill that guy. At least get him, even if you don't orange pill him on Bitcoin itself, tell him why it's good for his portfolio construction and get a couple percent in there.

27:49You're wearing a Bitwise t-shirt, right? Those guys do that better than literally anyone. Matt Hogan is the master of doing exactly what I would hope I'm able to do, right? To talk to that audience, come up with a great catchphrase. Hunter, those guys, they're amazing, right? Absolutely. Because they can go out and speak the language of TradFi, but give them that little bit of crypto conviction. quick shout outs to our legendary long-term when shift happens partners without whom none of this would be possible thank you to cast my go-to global money app to store earn move and spend stable coins across 170 plus countries directly with apple pay or a physical card on top of that i can also get paid in usd and euro with my cast virtual account use my promo code shift S-H-I-F-T and my link below to get 10 % off your membership, earn up to 3 % instant USD cashback on every card spend and get up to$250 in cash for referring your friends.

28:51No banks, no borders, just money that moves with you with stable cash rewards. Absolutely. That's the reason also why we built, I mean, a couple of years ago for me was just I was thinking, man, crypto media is so bad. The quality is terrible. We need, for me, it was more instead of saying, let's go institutional, it was more, we need like a safe space for like two hours to talk to the biggest people, to make the industry look more credible towards the outside world. Same as you, different angle, right? Different approach. But I was thinking crypto Twitter is a circle jerk. Like people just, it's, I mean, it's, people might not like to hear that, but it's retarded.

29:34And so they're thinking they're so cool and all that stuff, but how you grow the pie? Well, you need to make things simple, explain things to your mom, all that stuff. And that's what we do, basically. Crypto Twitter is a drag on crypto adoption. Nobody new looks at that and is like, wow, this is awesome. Can't wait to be a part of this. Yeah, absolutely. This is inspiring. Absolutely. You talk to everyone in the industry and some big people at the intersection of finance, entrepreneurship, and crypto. You talk to a lot of investors too. What are the most important lessons you've learned from interviewing the biggest people in finance and crypto?

30:21From a perspective of investing? Investing. I think that the hammering home the old adages of zooming out, the power of compounding, the power of dollar cost averaging, the power of having high conviction in something and sticking with it, especially if you feel like you're early. Those kind of things, because everybody has hot takes on everything. But at the end of the day, people have accumulated wealth the same way forever in markets. And we try to overcomplicate it and play the lottery with meme coins once again and all these things. But all you really have to do is start relatively early and don't touch it once you put it away.

31:04And never stop. But I used to joke about trading. It's not like you don't look at the billionaires of the world and think, wow, he probably like was really good at technical analysis. these guys didn't accumulate generational wealth by like trading lines on charts i have nothing against technical analysis i let you know but like or by like taking a position in a meme coin and perfectly timing the exit those are not ways to wealth right and i think at the end of the day we need to switch people's mental gears from speculating to win the lottery in the casino whether they think that's what it is or not to like long-term focused investing those will always be the most powerful lessons.

31:45Absolutely. But for some reason, I mean, you have crypto Twitter DJs who love the charts and the lines and the one minute chart, fine. But your audience or my audience could be 25 to 55, 60 year old. You said, for example, a dad of a family who says, ah, I'm interested into this Bitcoin thing. What do I do? well when they see the crazy volatility of this bitcoin thing without even thinking about any of the other altcoin they still think for some reason that i can buy this thing here and i can sell it here and i can rebuy it back lower probably because it's hyper volatile and it makes them think that they can trade it because it's more volatile what do you tell these people your audience, my audience, on how to internalize this, what you just explained.

32:46Buy and hold and dollar cost average and do nothing and don't break the compounding. There's no more dangerous belief, I think, in trading and investing than I'm going to sell this to buy lower. Because no matter where your target is lower, when it gets there, you want to buy lower so if bitcoin's at 80 i'm definitely buying at 70 when it gets 71 wow this thing looks terrible it's going down to 50 oh my god i can't believe it's going to 30 the people who sell to buy back lower are the ones who fomo in at the top and buy back when it's time to sell and so you're just not a genius you're not gonna time the market better than the most brilliant people and also you're not trading with the same full equipment and knowledge that the people you're trading against are i i just think you just don't trade this thing it's i mean and bitcoin's the boring one kind of as you alluded to right without even taking a look at the rest of them also at this point like it's not more volatile than meta stock or nvidia right i mean we have multi-trillion dollar companies that move more than bitcoin and they'll do it after hours on earnings when you can't even trade it.

34:03At least Bitcoin, you can make a decision if you wanted to at 2 a.m. on a Sunday. So yeah, I think it's boring and that's the beauty of it. As a recap, how can the average Joe and Jane or mom and pop get rich from investing in crypto in 2026 and beyond? Do I have to say buy Bitcoin again? I don't think it's a get-rich group. So I will say this. I don't think the same opportunities that happen to get rich quick and lucky will exist that existed in the past. In the past, I don't think we ever see an alt season like we did in 2017 where something you hold goes up 20 times and then you sell it and then you buy something else and it goes up and you can throw a dart and get totally lucky.

34:55I think those days are over. But does that mean that the opportunity is gone and that people should look elsewhere or that there is still a massive opportunity in doing that boring buy? Massive opportunity. I think it's a massive opportunity just you have to not treat it like the lottery or like a casino. And by the way, anyone who got rich in those previous cycles lost it all. Of course. Right? So nobody's getting rich and staying rich are two wildly different things. The reason they got rich is the reason why they lost it all. Of course. And yeah, of course. I've been there. I've been there.

35:28Welcome to the party, guys. Don't do it again. Nice memories from 2022. Terrible. Terrible. What did you learn in 2022? I mean, everything I'm doing now is a result of the lessons of 2022. Give me a few lessons from 2022, the beginning of the last crazy bear market. most of the lessons that I learned are lessons I knew that I finally accepted. So that's actually the unlock, right? Like if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Like there's things like this, but you don't feel it. And then when it all actually went away, I was like, I'm not going to pursue these too good to be true opportunities anymore.

36:15They actually are too good to be true, right? And so like chasing those yields that happened on those C5 platforms, no interest in that anymore, right? But I would have continued to do that for years if that had been successful or had not blown up so spectacularly. Like I said, being slow, dollar cost averaging, focusing primarily on Bitcoin, the way that I approach my content and my business. Like, you know, listen, I'm 49 years old. Kids, young kids. Like, I don't have the stomach for the volatility that I used to. Not that it's not exciting enough, but I want my life to be very boring. I want my investing to align with that.

36:52Probably you're doing way better financially like that. Yes. So on a steady bit, my number's not as big, but that number was fake anyways. Yeah. So, right, people psychologically compare the problem with portfolios and trading and stuff. The only number that matters is the highest your portfolio ever was for humans, right? That's not the way it should be. I've literally asked the question and I've been like, okay, so you start with$100 ,000, okay? and you turn it into a million dollars in a week. And a week later it crashes and you have$200 ,000. Did you make$100 ,000 or did you lose$800 ,000?

37:31And people mentally are like, I lost$800 ,000. You're like, no, you actually doubled your money. You did great, right? But you'll never, you'll always compare yourself to that million top number. So I don't do that anymore. Like it really like, I don't track my portfolio. I don't even have a portfolio. Like getting rid of Blockfolio and Delta and all those things over the years was the best thing I ever did. Don't care. That's not real. Whatever number there, I'm not benchmarking my life to. I'm concerned with how much I earn on a month-to-month basis and how much Bitcoin I can buy with that and select other few assets and move on with my life.

38:07What other few assets are you interested in except Sol ETH? You know what? I'm having a very hard time wanting to buy stocks. I always dollar cost average since 2007, 2008 By the way, I bought the entire tops of those markets too. So S &P 500, NASDAQ, what do you? Yeah, SPY. Dollar cost, mutual funds, SPY. But I don't really pick stocks anymore, like individual stocks, which I always used to do. I always trade stocks and options and such. I mean, I still think being a little bit diversified is important. I own real estate and other things, and I've invested in some private equity and hedge funds and things.

38:47But largely, I can't look at anything out there right now and think, if I had 50 grand sitting here right now, what should I buy? The answer always comes back to Bitcoin. So every month you buy mostly Bitcoin? Every day I buy Bitcoin. Every day. If there's an up dip.

39:10I have an old retirement fund that's passively still buying. You know what? That's a lie. I sold it all because it was tax-free and bought STRC.

39:22What's your most unexpected but best interview ever? Unexpected but best interview. That is a really, this one. Hopefully. That is a really, really hard question. I've interviewed so many people. Honestly, I hate to say it, but probably my first interview with Saylor when he was brand new. What was that? September 2020. That's an amazing timing, actually. Or October 2020. It was right when MicroStrategy bought Bitcoin for the first time. And I reached out. I think I actually commented on something he said on Twitter, like something, and he like, I can't remember the exact DM. I would love to find it.

40:10But he DMed me. He was like, LOL, I'll come on your pod. Ha ha. That kind of thing. I think I invited him passively as a joke. And we did the two-hour sailor thing. And he said so many things that blew my mind. And this was, you know, he was not like Michael Sailor yet. Not in the Bitcoin world. And I was like, who the hell is this guy? I have a clip that I've run a thousand times. I said, you're a billionaire. He was already a billionaire. People forget. It's not like he made his money in Bitcoin. You can do anything with your money. You know, like, why this? And he went on this diatribe about, you know, how there's the cypherpunks and the hard money advocates and the deep believers.

40:58And, like, that's the side of history he wants to be remembered for being a part of. And it was more of an emotional and, like, legacy decision than it was a financial one. And you think about it back then, you know, nothing relative to now, you know, and his purchases were tiny and he just saw it, man. And like, I look back, he saw it and he built it like he's carrying the entire freaking industry on his shoulder, which is scary to a lot of people, but not not. When did you understand that building a personal brand was a game changer? I'm pretty sure I still don't understand that building a personal brand is a game changer.

41:39No, I mean, I think it was intriguing to see how much people would follow, especially when I started as a trader and such, but how kind of fragile that was. So I think the more important question is not like building a brand being important, building a quality brand. Because I think we've seen a lot of people, and we've all flirted with it to some degree, but build a brand and then explode spectacularly very publicly in front of everyone. You've got to be a honey badger like Bitcoin and survive all the bad and stick through the bear markets and keep showing up every single day. But I would say that even though I was big-ish, I think once again post-2022, I realized that your reputation and your brand is kind of everything.

42:29And I think those are interchangeable. The question might be your reputation because you can build a brand but that doesn't mean that you've built a good reputation. Think about how many cartoon avatars there are on Twitter that people treat like gospel who knows who they are but unserious and waiting to launch that meme coin and perfectly fine to blow up their integrity for a paycheck. But I think if you want to be here for a very long time you just have to be very careful. It's a minefield. Absolutely. What's the biggest myth that you want to help us debunk today about investing that you learned through your career and also through all the interviews that you've made?

43:17I think the biggest myth is that you can trade your way ahead of the market. It's kind of the same thing. In those early days when I would trade altcoins and be like, how much money I'm making, The biggest shocker was the day that I hit the button that showed my portfolio in Bitcoin instead of dollars. And I was like, I did all this and I have the same amount of Bitcoin or less, right? So you extrapolate that to investing in the S &P or whatever. How many times did buying some individual stock do better than just dollar cost averaging into the S &P? It's just so boring. But it's great. That boring is terrible when you're young because you want excitement.

43:53But it's amazing when you're older because it unlocks so much time. I feel like investing in Bitcoin frees so much time from waste on the speculation and the deep research into the project and reading the white papers. That's an amazing lesson, actually. Who cares? Quick shout out to the legendary team at Jupyter, the DeFi super app. Anything you want to do on-chain, from trading to earning yield, you can just use Jupyter. Personally, I recommend getting the Jupyter wallet on either your phone or your laptop. 10 times faster and 10 times cheaper than the competition. You're gonna love it! Thank you to the awesome team at Athena for backing today's conversation.

44:35Athena is one of the fastest growing projects in DeFi with over$7 billion in stablecoin supply and an average 11 % APY on SUSDE. And importantly, zero DPEGs since launch, which is exactly what you want from a stablecoin. Go check them out by following the link in the description down below. What's your goal with your media company? My goal has for a very long time been the same, and that is to bring, I would have said crypto to the mainstream. Now I would say bring Bitcoin and a very select piece of crypto to the mainstream. I was really an ardent believer, you know, it's always a Bitcoiner at heart, but I really believe with deep conviction that people should own Bitcoin.

45:21I'm not going to tell them what price to buy it at or advise on that, but I really think it's the most important financial asset ever created, if you view it as a financial asset. It serves so many purposes for me mentally. I know it sounds like you're like... Can you give a few of them? Yeah, so first of all, I have high conviction in price, right? So I think it's a superior way to store wealth. When you know what you know about the central banks and the United States government and the way money is created, which I don't think most people do, all of a sudden that volatility doesn't feel like a problem.

45:55You don't feel like you're speculating. But I think there's also an element of it that is somewhat apolitical. It's a statement of your belief system. And actually it was falling down the Bitcoin rabbit hole, I think that unlocked my political views, non-political views, I should say. Like that's when I registered unaffiliated and stopped choosing a party or choosing a team or choosing a side because to me, at least I felt, whether I was or not, buying Bitcoin to me does feel like opting out a bit or doing something to protest the existing systems that we all know are completely false and wrong.

46:42and so it's like I said it also just unlocks for me mental time and it sounds crazy but like I know that I can just buy that not think about it I don't need to go into the meme coin casino to try to figure out what the next thing is it's like you know Netflix and chill just Bitcoin and chill just buy some Bitcoin and hang out it's not that hard you know go like talk to a girl absolutely Absolutely.

47:10Bitcoin and chill. Just make t-shirts. That'll be the next t-shirt. And replace the NFA with Bitcoin and chill.

47:22What's your goal today in life? You have a number in mind. The number always changes. So that's a moving target. There's nobody who has a number and actually leaves when they hit the number. So it's not about a number at all. Actually, so outside of my business goal, which I told you is sort of mainstream adoption or being a voice, my personal goal is always freedom, right? So I can work very hard, but I work very hard on my own terms and means I can work very hard as a parent and as a husband as well. And if I want to go skiing or on a trip or if I want to, you know, take off for the day and take my kid out of school and go ride BMX bikes at the pump track, you know, whatever it is, like I value my time more than I value anything.

48:15So I happen to not view what I do as work. So I don't think it's a waste of time. but if I the minute that I felt like what I was doing was forced upon me or something I had to do I would probably pivot entirely and go sit on a beach or hang out with my kids all the time but I don't miss a I don't miss a baseball game my kids only six like I don't miss a game I don't miss a recital I don't miss anything I take them to practice I pick them up from school you know those things to me I value more than anything and yeah I think being your own boss to whatever degree, even though there's a lot of stress, a lot of work, it unlocks that freedom.

48:52My goal is to never stop working. I love what I do, so my goal is to keep doing it. You said before, I really fundamentally believe that everyone should own Bitcoin. What's the risk, and you explain why, what's the risk for someone who does not own Bitcoin? Well, to remain on the hamster wheel of life, fighting against the forces that are placed upon you of inflation and irresponsible monetary policy, everything you do, you're getting outrun. If you don't own some sort of hard assets, in my mind, Bitcoin, but if you don't, you look at the numbers. I mean, what percentage of people on the planet own some sort of hard asset that benefits from inflation?

49:42it can't be more than I think 90 % of people probably don't worldwide, maybe more. They're fighting an uphill battle that they can't win. And most of them have never learned why or can't explain it, but they just know. No matter what gaslighting the government gives them about prices coming down or inflation being under control, you don't save any money. You go to work, you go to your second job. You still don't save any money. And you need to get off that hamster wheel. So for me, listen, I'm cognizant of the fact that not everybody has any money to invest in anything. Most people don't. But even$10 a Bitcoin here,$20 a Bitcoin, buy some stocks.

50:27I don't know what it is. If it's not Bitcoin for you, but something that might benefit from the irresponsibility of the government, I just think most people don't know. what do you see or hear behind the scenes because you have a bunch of obviously like you talk to all these people on camera on record but also off record what do you see or hear behind the scene that most people who are not talking to the big guys like you like you do don't see or don't hear i think i get a lot of color or honesty about where things stand that publicly look like they stand in a different place. Legislation, for example.

51:09I'm super bearish on the Clarity Act passing. There's one example. And no matter how many guests I have come on who have told me for a year it'll happen next month, it'll happen next month, it'll happen next month. Then sometimes we get off camera and they're just beat down. They're like, I don't know, man. You know, like I, you know, I'll get a text here or there from someone very close to it and they'll be like, come on man your pessimism is killing me come on come on you're not helping the cause you know like i think uh a lot of things that like we cheerlead to the public or see being cheerleaded to the public are not likely to happen i mean that's a great example but generally i think you just get the whole story instead of part of the story sometimes you know Well, you see the reality as it stands, right?

52:03How do you stay motivated during a bear market to keep producing content, to keep investing more when people are kind of depressed? And even the big people that you talk to might say, actually, this thing is not really happening or not as quick as possible. Or for example, I talk to some mega founders in the space and when I'm in the car with them, they tell me, sometimes I'm really wondering what I'm doing here. Like literally, I'm like, holy shit. That's the kind of thing you hear off camera. I'm like, holy shit, if this dude is telling me this, like, I mean, I mean, we all are wondering sometimes, right?

52:41But like, who else? Who is left to? There's all, yeah. I mean, those are like, to me, they're classic bottom signals, right? I've seen it so many times now. that I almost laugh it off. But we're getting a lot of those now. Didn't Pomp tweet recently that crypto's over or something? Not hating on Pomp at all. I saw he said all crypto is going to zero except Bitcoin. We've seen a lot of that. To me, that's probably those type things. And once again, I think he's right about 99 % of the things that have existed in the past in crypto. The tokens, for sure. I don't disagree. But I don't know. Like I said, I'm an optimist.

53:30It's going to be fine. Except it's going to be fine. Tell us, make us feel, breathe your optimism. Tell us something that keeps everyone optimistic about the future. I mean, for crypto? Crypto and in general. I mean, I hear people say, I don't know that I have an exact answer for you, but I'll tell you. I hear people say that this bear market is the worst we've ever been through. And the recency bias of that is so absurd and insane that I can't even process that. If you were here in 21 and 2022 and you think this is bad, this is like a giggle fest. This isn't even a bear market. Bitcoin, yes, it made a new all-time high, but we're trading much higher than previous cycles by multiples.

54:21Like we had an existential crisis wondering if our industry would ever exist. The United States government was wholesale attacking every single person in this industry, suing anybody they could possibly find. Now we have ETFs and we have Larry Fink, arguably the most powerful person in the world. I mean, I like to joke like we have four branches of the United States government, like the judicial, the Supreme Court, the executive, the president, the legislative, Senate and Congress and BlackRock. You know, and like the most powerful person on the planet talks about Bitcoin like he's Satoshi Takamoto.

54:53Like not just like, oh, you should invest in this thing. He like gets it. You know, even Jamie Dimon to JP Morgan, our biggest skeptic is out here talking about how blockchain is the future. Like this is the best it's literally ever been. I don't understand how you can be bearish. Like Bitcoin is going to go so much higher. It's going to blow people's minds. And they also forget that Bitcoin spends almost all of its time sideways and boring. And that's like 10 days a year. You make all of the money. So you just need to be in it. That's an argument for your question earlier about buying and selling it.

55:27You'll just miss the big move. It's the same with S &P 500, right? If you miss, there's multiple studies. If you miss the best 10 days, then your returns are like 50%. Yeah, massively. It's like almost non-existent. So like, yeah, I mean, to give people hope, just zoom out. Like we have, whether you like it or not, I can get it if you're like a hardcore libertarian and you don't want the institutions touching it, but we have full institutional adoption, governments talking about strategic Bitcoin reserves, governments mining Bitcoin, literally everything being tokenized and put on blockchain rails.

55:58It's the best time we've ever had. Yeah, I remember when Bitcoin was like 3K. I mean, after COVID crashed in 2020, it goes to 3.5 or something. And there was the halving coming. And there was a bunch of people, me included, because I was telling my parents, Bitcoin is going to be at 100K one day. It's going to be at 100K, but like 3.5K. It just went from 10 to 3.5. What are you talking about? There will be something that happens that will make this thing go up, right? And now it went to 126, which basically is more than 100. And then it goes back. People say it's going to go to 1 million. Well, how?

56:33We don't really know, but there will be something that will happen at some point. We'll be like, actually, in hindsight, it was obvious. Yeah. Yeah. You just have to believe. But it is obvious. so I don't know if it's a million or a half a million or what the catalyst will be I know you can just keep buying it and you don't need to guess what that catalyst will be you just need to wait it's always happened I believe that it will happen in the future but that I mean that was the generational buying opportunity when it went from 10 to 3 ,500 the like generational buying opportunity and it went up even in that cycle it went up 17x from there you know people talk about the stock market post-COVID, it doubled.

57:12Oh my gosh. Bitcoin went up 17 times from just under$4 ,000 to$69 in that cycle. ETH went up 50X. It was the second largest crypto. Thank you so much, Scott, for doing that. That was fun. That was awesome. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Thank you. Nice. You're really good at this. As you probably know by now, I host some of the biggest names in Bitcoin and crypto on my podcast. But a lot of the best stuff never makes it on air. The Shift newsletter is where I share that raw behind the alpha, the insights, stories, and lessons straight from my guests that you won't hear anywhere else.

57:51If you want the real inside take on Bitcoin and crypto, join my newsletter, The Shift, in the description down below.

From the publisher

Scott Melker, host of The Wolf of All Streets, explains why most people chasing quick wins in crypto never make it, and why his own strategy is deliberately boring: mostly Bitcoin, bought on a schedule and left alone.

He also opens up about being a top creditor in the Voyager collapse, his first interview with Michael Saylor, and why he thinks crypto Twitter is actively hurting mainstream adoption.
