In short
The hosts swap travel stories from Colorado and France, then recap a Basque-region wedding in Biarritz, plus outdoor activities, driving culture, and party/DJ anecdotes.
Guests
Chris and Jason (co-hosts). No other guests are interviewed; they mention people they traveled with (Carolyn, Alex Chapman, Drew the guide) and wedding attendees, but not as podcast guests.
Guest backgrounds (as described in-episode): Chris and Jason are frequent travelers and outdoor/food enthusiasts; Chris is a musician/DJ who recognizes songs quickly and runs parties; Jason is an experienced cyclist (city/e-bike) and driver who talks about rental cars and road behavior.
Key claims
Trenchera Reserve protects large acreage from fire and preserves wildlife (including a rare beetle); Swarovski binoculars make bison-viewing feel close. In France, they crave “plain white rice”/Asian flavors when French food gets too heavy. At the wedding, Allison Roman officiated and the ceremony was non-religious with vows and rings.
Notable examples
fly-fishing brook trout; bison viewing with Swarovski; gravel biking downhill seat adjustments; hotel bath water turning brown; hazard-light “thank you” driving; wedding DJ transitions and playing Dolly Babe “Pink Blush” via Bluetooth.

0:32Jason Stewart:god's country okay what are they protecting these acres from or who i think they're protecting them from i think there's several animals that live here that are protected as well as i think just if you don't if someone's not looking over it shit will burn or get fucked up it's my understanding it's my it's my understanding if i i gotta keep an eye on this acreage or else it's going to burn you know so no data centers are allowed to go in no there's some type of rare beetle that we have to preserve yeah we saw look we were out after we went we went fly fishing both caught a brook trout not to you know not nothing crazy couple of brookies couple of brookies but it was that we had to do a new method that i didn't learn the bow and arrow cast which feels like it's cheating a little bit where you like do you know what that is where you like pull it back and launch it instead of with your wrist but it was because we were we weren't in waiters we were like on the on the uh on the bank right it's a little bit of a cheater shot if you don't do the little whip i agree well once we started getting that the hang of that then we started doing some roll casting as well but alex was a natural i have to say well she's more graceful of the two no offense to you that's true she has a dancer's body as well as a dancer's mind i don't think anyone would argue with that but then we went we went with our our guide drew and we just drove around and we had these i didn't know this but swaworsky makes binoculars they're very high they make a high-end binocular product that's very popular in this world so we went and looked at animal we went and looked at animals which i was like okay i don't give a fuck about this but then you know you see you see 15 bison hanging out it's it's pretty impressive okay so with the with the Swarovski binoculars it feels like you're right there with your bison friends exactly exactly exactly you're right there with them in a friendly way not and I'm gonna kill you way which is probably what they're used to when the humans creep up right right right damn that's that's beautiful I like that we're both having outdoor adventures in rustic rural locales while we take our how long on vacation break of doing one day off well i think i think that we both made the bet you're you're deep in france we both made the best of it i think that's the thing we did use the the one day off to our advantage there's no best of it yeah we made the we made the best of it we made the best of vacationing our evil our evil overlords only give us one day off a year so we got to make sure we're we're somewhere bitch you're the evil overlord that's you that was the joke that was the joke man in the mirror That was the joke.
3:02All right, so you're in. I know. Where are you right now?
3:04Jason Stewart:I am at a hotel in Biarritz, France called Brindos, which is sort of like, it has a lot of Chateau Marmont energy to it. It's like a little old, a little rustic. The plant life has sort of taken over some of the structures, you know, perfect ivy covering the walls and the tiles. It's really, really magical. but then also like the chateau you know it's kind of you know maybe the food's not great maybe well it's i mean it's french food it's not going to be great no matter what so that's that's tough i mean there's not much you can do there you know yeah actually when you like when you're traveling and you know in a foreign place and everyone has like a certain amount of days where they're like all right i'm tapping out i can't have any more you know x whatever the food is there what is the thing that you start craving the most like if you're in france and every time it's just like beef bourguignon and duck confit and just like you know what what do you reach for for me it's i think it's like plain white rice i don't want to do this because it feels like it is stealing your swag but asian flavors of some kind um asian flavors of some kind whether whether that's a pad thai with a little kick or it's a you know spicy tuna crispy rice or a fucking dumpling you know from one of my neighboring dumpling emporiums like whatever i that's what that's what i crave the most or sometimes then oh sorry go ahead sometimes a veggie burger and french fries sometimes that but that's that's the asian is usually where i'm going okay then when you'd go to asia and you're eating nothing but dumplings tuna tataki spicy crispy rolls yeah do at that point do you start craving you know creamed corn and things like that pizza pizza baby want pizza well even though even though the pizza in japan's amazing and actually the best i didn't i didn't want it they just simply perfected it i didn't want to wait in line for two and a half hours for a 16 incher pause so i just i was like you know what i'll wait till i get back to new york city the greatest city in the world and no only for a 16 incher i'll wait all day known for their zaza i'll just i'll just i'll wait till i get yeah i'm i'm fine with mid with middle not mid pizza middle pizza yeah the pizza that's just regular sometimes you just want regular i don't yeah i guess when i'm when i'm here and i'm craving the tie you know i want i want the tie that's like the neighborhood spot where it's just regular tie you don't want you know this is this is the night market song pastrami yeah uh you know with the green crushed peppercorns imported from the szechuan region it's funny that you i never eat thai food like i rare i guess i go to i guess we go to whatchamacallit sometimes why am i thinking i can't think of it in new york what the the place that's like crazy that people wait in line for all the time like thai diner thai diner thai diner yeah thai diner is fucking delicious but i agree that sometimes i mean we don't live quite as close anymore because i used to go sometimes you just want some reggie same thing with my 3.5 i want yeah exactly i want regular shit but now i told you about mommy you told me about i think you went to mommy pies first that's a special restaurant mommy pies is smack is smack is smacking and it's different mommy pies is smacking it's it's very easy to get spiced out there though sometimes you think you're just getting to something a little regular and then it hits your little yeah your blanc palette a little too heavy my palate my palate is blanc as hell you're Paul Blanc what'd that little white mouth do boy you've been in France for too long bro I bet you're craving some white rice like a motherfucker right now when we were leaving the Aubergue Chateau in sort of in the center of France we were staying at this hotel and it was kind of like a Michelin kind of experience but we just were like we just can't have another fucking whatever even though we had only been in france for like four days or something probably four or five days but we're i was like let's just get you know because the the resorts they kind of try to trap you in there so whatever it is that you need they're selling it to you you know what i mean of course um so we we decided to go off campus and sneak out in our car and you know they don't they don't want you to do it but we did it we hopped the fence and ran out and then you know this is literally in the center of france in the country and we're like let's go and i was researching restaurants around and like just places that have anything but you know beef bourguignon and things like that um steak and french fries and there's like this little like it's kind of like a summer camp kind of vibe it's right along the river it's a lot of like outdoorsy like traveler folks and the uh the menu like had all this different you know i had pizza and burgers and you know a little bit of this a little bit of that it was kind of a free-for-all a melange of things and then i was like okay let's you know it looks fine and i found another place and it looked really good and i called for a reservation i was like um a scottish woman answered and she's like oh we're all full tonight it's bingo night so you know there's not a single table open and i was like well where should we go and then she's like you got to go to this place called zen and i said okay that sounds fucked up and carolyn was hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on what is what is bango night oh bingo night i was just saying with her scottish accent oh i'm sorry i thought there was a new i thought there was a new thing i wasn't i wasn't aware of okay all right bingo about bango it's sort of like a cross between like dubstep and sorry so sold out and then she sent you to zango house zen which sounds like yeah she said we got to go to zen and then we we go to zen and it used to be a french restaurant but it just turned ownership over recently so all the google photos are from the old restaurant that's awesome so it's a full so we go there expecting one thing and it all they serve is thai food and it's just these it's like french teenage girls you know explaining what uh pad thai is to me okay so you got woman's pad tie by a french girl i got a woman's plane pad tie by a 15 year old french girl already covered in tattoos and sleeves don't let max bemis know about that don't uh okay so so so yeah we had i had you know we were we're eating some you know chicken curry lemongrass curry by the river it was with a bunch of like sunburned uh germans wearing tiva sandals and things like that but it was it was like the food was not it was not good Thai food for sure but it was it was such an oasis that Carolyn and I hit the spot I mean just any port in the storm and to to be slurping you know a spicy lemongrass broth with some white rice oh my god it was it was like the healing waters of of Christ himself were being poured down my throat that's gonna be whoa that's gonna be me pulling into uh air one tonight after i land from my my flight from denver that's how it's gonna that's how it's gonna feel oh you're going to la from denver tonight oh yeah i gotta well it's huge where we are is there's it's actually awesome we took an air it's called like denver airlines is how you get here you have to fly to you have to fly to denver on on delta or whatever and then funky name we go to denver airlines and i look at the board and it's 10 no joke 10 cities that i've never heard of and i'm like i'm like this is that local that it's like new mexico and and colorado and there's that many and it's a you know the flight was like pretty packed but unfortunately hyper regional there's only one today so alex and i are taking the same one to denver and then she's going to new york and i'm going to la so it's a it worked out i guess i would like to be there a little earlier but you know here we are but i didn't realize so you're where we are is is we're really close to taos new mexico we're like an hour and a half from taos which I didn't realize.
11:12Yeah, I would have made it because it's like, it's pretty, it's very remote, but like the guy who owns this resort also. It's Mecca for a guy like you. I love Taos and I would have gone if I would have, if I would have looked at a map.
11:23Jason Stewart:You gotta go to Taos, man. Yeah, it does feel Marin coated even though it's not. I don't know why it does, but it does feel Marin coated. But I was, I was thinking of you because yesterday I did some, did some gravel mountain biking yesterday. Which I found pretty engaging actually. I don't think it's a sport I would adopt into my normal life, but I have to say it's a, it's a nice way to see the peaks and valleys of a region like this. It was engaging. Well, I did the guide, this, this woman, Cam, who we spent some time with the whole time we're here. She was like, she wasn't gassing me up, but she was like, look, this is the fastest I've ever been able to do this.
12:00Whoa. And that's probably because the crowd is 60 plus and we're trying to bring it down a little bit. You know what I'm saying? So, but it was like, it's a little, it was a little scary. I have to say, I was feeling like a pussy and I had to power through.
12:10Jason Stewart:um because like it was like a a steep drop off or something like that it's steep and there's like little banks and it's like you know it's just i'm not i don't use a a gravel off-road you know yeah e-bike very often e-bike well they're all i guess that's the whole thing now like if you because oh honey i mean you don't use it when you're you know i didn't really use it unless it was like straight uphill only when you're cranking up yeah you don't you're not okay when you're zipping down the hill that's just gravitate but it had this like button we could adjust the seat while you're using it what the yeah like the seat would like basically because it's like when you're i guess when you're descending you want your feet at nine and three and you're like ass back over the seat so that like you're obviously you're less likely to go over the handlebars if you're like kind of brace you know if you're if you're aware of it you have to uh you have to go kind of kim petrus mode you kind of yeah exactly yeah you tuck back and you don't want to you basically you don't want the seat, you know, grinding so you can lower it.
13:09You just hit the button just a little bit so it's not tickling.
13:11Jason Stewart:That's crazy. It's smart. It's cool. It was really interesting. So you can tuck her on the downhill and then back up she goes. And I want to say something that all of my years of SoulCycle, which felt in vain, it felt like just an avenue for me to sweat out pills to take more pills. Yesterday, let me tell you something. When she said, let's get that ass back over the seat, I was transported to Soho 2015 the weekend coming on the loudspeaker. I'm in the front row. Parker's screaming at me, and I'm fucking riding at home. And I felt I had some real flashbacks. It's you, a 13-year-old Jake Shane coming off the seat, and we're pumping.
13:51Jason Stewart:Exactly. That's exactly what it was. It was an amazing flashback. I'm looking at these beautiful landscapes, and all I could think about is a dark, cavernous Soho sweat lodge full of fucking moms without jobs it was beautiful yeah you didn't know but you were you were in basic training much like a fellow marine semper fi you never forget your training it sticks with you so as soon as somebody says let's get let's get out of that seat lightning goes through your body and muscle memory takes over i immediately was transported back and i was wearing nike shorts with a you know a liner just like i was so the outfit was the same i think that i think that I didn't have a smart water squirt bottle that paid eight for, but other than that, it was...
14:39Jason Stewart:And there was no pumping music, no fog machine or anything like that. No, there was no, unfortunately, there was no music. There was no encouraging. Just the sound of the bison's call on the horizon. Exactly. This episode of How Long Gone is brought to you by Quince. Jason, as you know, but some of our listeners might not, Quince specializes in everyday staples that work harder, like their ultra soft organic cotton teas and premium Mongolian cashmere sweaters. I like my navy blue v-neck cashmere sweater. I wear it all the time. It's a little hot right now, but it's a go-to. It's versatile, timeless, and it transitions seamlessly from a casual workday to a big dinner out.
15:15Jason Stewart:Yeah, and almost every day you're taking a big dinner, and then afterwards, I like to come home from that dinner, take a nice cold shower, and then go into those nice quince sheets with a quince pillow, and they're priced so well that, you know, we can pop them out and get new ones every year and it feels so beautiful. We don't have to sit on those old pillows for so long, fella. Go on, Quince. Get some freshies for when that partner comes over and they're going to say, wow, it's so cool and it smells so clean and nice in here. Upgrade your everyday. 16:05Jason Stewart:riding or cycle cross kind of vibe whatever but i feel like the reason why it exists is it's like a reaction to how fucking goofy looking mountain bikes have become yeah where you're like oh let's go mountain biking and it used to just be like it's a regular bike that has like off-road tires and maybe like a couple, you know, a little bit of zhuzh here and there compared to a regular road bike. And nowadays they just look like these like malformed fucking like weird, you know, and they're like$8 ,000 in carbon fiber and they bouncy and squishy. And most people are like, that's way too fucking OD for me, bro.
16:43This thing looks pretty normal, I have to say. Like once I realized the technology involved, I knew it wasn't normal, but from a visual perspective, it wasn't hitting crazy.
16:52Jason Stewart:i have to say that's nice i've only been doing city bike riding i guess i'm also e assist it as well i would that's what she was like do you spend a lot of time on the bike and i was like actually yeah i kind of do like i use a bike every day in the city now if i'm yeah if i'm in new york i mean obviously it's different but like i i found but when you're doing that kind of world that you ride a bike more than i do nowadays hey man well i mean you live in a famously bike uh hating place i would say it's a dangerous place to live on two wheels there for sure it's just also it doesn't it doesn't really feel like convenient in any way unless you live in certain neighborhoods like there's no purpose unless you live next to the river yeah it's not really convenient whatsoever yeah there's no there's nowhere to go there's nowhere to go i ain't trying to die me neither yeah it was actually it was cool when we were at that um at that hotel in the middle of france there was like um a rainstorm and they uh apparently like made the water go like from like the lake reservoir like whatever the basin system it got like mudded up uh-oh and we you know we we we get in we check in we have dinner we you know blah blah blah we go back to the hotel and uh go to draw a bath for carolyn and the water starts coming out brown oh hell no and we're like bro and this is like 10 o 'clock at night you know in like a rural yeah this is this is an auberge hotel it's not like a little it's not a wooden shack but 10 p.m of brown water i don't care how it's i'm saying it's gonna be tough pulling up brownies we're pulling up brownies brookies rainbows it's just gonna be it's gonna be tough to get anything done at 10 p.m.
18:37in France, except unless you want a pack of cigarettes you can get, any help you ain't going to get.
18:42Jason Stewart:So basically we just kind of hit the hay unwashed, and the next morning Carolyn went into Karen mode, and before I even woke up, she already was on the website and was like, oh, I've noticed that the Soleil Suite is available. Jesus Christ. We got the upgrade and we are literally in a hotel room much bigger than our house, just like a giant, amazing, vast room. And it ended up working out well. And we were the reason why they ended up fixing it because we were patient zero. We drew the bath and they called the guys and they came and fixed it or whatever. But yeah, it was tough. it was tough and i i prefer i prefer driving in italy to france italy is really a driver's country the french are a little as it comes as it pertains to the blinker um and i was i'm really missing italy as i'm behind the wheel because i did i did drive about 500 miles from from paris dude i don't know i don't know why you do this to yourself i mean i know that it's i understand that it's in some ways more convenient and like quote unquote more fun if you're a you know quote unquote road and track kind of cat and i know you like to drive i know you like to drive fast and you're a very skilled driver i trust my life in your hands many times in our friendship but i i just don't i don't know man i have i would i would never i i've i've been driven hours and hours in europe in the back of a sprinter to avoid what you do and i i don't know if it's it's definitely not cost effective by any means but i just don't want the responsibility and i don't i'm you know what i'm afraid of i'm afraid of something going wrong and me having to deal with a french or italian person at fucking sixth or enterprise and it just not it's not going to work it's going to go off the rails yeah i guess i really have a uh devil may care attitude as it pertains to that because it is a little crazy to just be in the middle of fucking nowhere and, you know, just calling the sixth rental car assist line and, you know, waiting 11 days for something to happen.
20:57Jason Stewart:Everything, I mean, it couldn't have been better. Like, we were staying at the Chateau Voltaire, as you know, just across the street from CrossFit Louvre. One of my favorite gym in Paris, the CrossFit Louvre. The CrossFit Louvre. Love doing those pull-ups on those scaffolding bars. is a nice uh i like a girthier bar to wrap my large hands around you know brother i get it brother the girth matters so yeah girth does matter my bar at home i've got it taped up of course but i'm thinking about me you know maybe welding on a custom piece you had to add a couple inches you had to add a couple inches i had to let i had to let it out in the waist a little bit yeah i've been eating a lot i've been eating good uh but uh yeah literally we walk two minutes around the corner to the sixth rental car which is next door to the breitling store and the ritz carlton across from the cartier and some french guys like uh here's here's your keys you don't don't sign up for this you don't need that insurance here you go boom boom that's nice We get upgraded from an X1 to an X2 dimmer, diesel.
22:07Jason Stewart:How diesel? So, diesel, I was able to, literally, I was able to drive 500 miles on one tank of gas. So crazy. That is crazy. Better mileage than a goddamn Tesla. And then when we dropped the car off at Biarritz right now, the hotel that we're at is four minutes away from the airport. And there's six rental cars there. so it couldn't be more door to door i'm very lucky about it that is nice okay and i just love i mean but i really miss because like when you're in italy if you're if you're in the the passing lane the far left lane and if you're going any speed under 104 miles per hour the car behind you will be flashing its brights honking its horn a grandma will be sticking her head out the window and putting a curse on you uh you know a five-year-old boy is telling me to fuck my mother in the face because because i am blocking them they want to go 108 miles an hour and i'm only going 104 but um you're in the way so you you move out of the way at all at all times but i i sort of don't feel like i have enough time spent to to be doing that you know me as an outsider i i feel like i can't honk and flash the brights and things like that but in france for some reason i i feel like big dick swimming around i feel like i'm the i'm the king of the king of the road because french people they'll be in the slow land american american exceptionalism strikes again i love it that's what i like to hear personally there you'll gotta you got you know a grandpa in the in the Peugeot and he's puts the blinker on to to drive around the the 18 wheeler or whatever and then he's sitting in the fast lane the blinkers has been on for 17 minutes now he doesn't know what's going on he doesn't so like if you drive up behind him and give him a little tailgate for him to move he doesn't know where the car came from he's scared you drive past him and he looks at you like he's just seen a ghost he looks like i've got a gun pointed at him and it's just me sort of you know smiling at him or whatever but now i started doing the i've adopted turning on the the hazard lights as a way of thanking people for moving out of the way that's the move this is this is this something you've witnessed other foreign drivers doing or is this a tj original um no no this i did not invent this this is a it's i think it's a more of a european thing but just as a way of saying thank you or sometimes i'm sorry okay okay it works for it works for both like a like a good a good greeting or salutation should yeah i was somebody cut me off like uh the reason why i learned somebody cut me off and i'm like yelling i'm honking i'm like you motherfucker and then they've turned the blinkers on but you just you just kind of tap it for like two seconds and then turn it off give it give it you know two three flashes and that's to let them know like hey thanks or I'm sorry whatever so they cut me off they felt bad they flashed the blinkers and my my anger reaction time didn't even have a didn't give it a chance to flash more than once so I I thought that he put the hazards on because he was like in an emergency and then I started honking and yelling even more because I was like oh this motherfucker cut me off and now he puts the hazards on he's gonna slow down and i and and then i realized quickly you know what it means so now now i'm blinking i'm thanking everyone and i was you're responsible you're responsible asshole driver and that's what that's all you can that's all you can hope for yeah that's all you can do i i made it from uh from bordeaux to biarritz which is a two two and a half hour drive i did that in one hour and 20 minutes it's coolest the the funny the straightest thing about you is when you boast boast about making good time like you're a 50 year old man driving your family to fucking you know the beach in 1997 in a station wagon that's that is the oldest whitest dad it's characteristic of me i i literally i get in the car i i fire up the maps and it says you know you are 228 miles away from your destination four hours and eight minutes or whatever it is and i go 408 remember it babe and then you know we're all right not and then i call it it's like it's like when you're at the pool hall and you're calling your shots you know what i mean behind the back corner pocket no not that one i'm gonna bring it back over here and i turn that 408 and and carolyn's like i feel like 337 can we do that i'm like yeah i think we can hit 337 are you are you ever are you stopping for any reason like would you are you are you so desperate to make good time to feel manly that you will maybe hurt your you know your your liver is gonna get oh i wet myself you're sure i wet myself you're holding it you know you you're whatever will you stop i have a good example i have a good example of something that i did to shave a couple minutes off uh you hit the toll road every 17 minutes you have to pay four dollars and 90 cents four euros and 90 euros um you know every 17 minutes uh and so i'm going i'm behind a there's like a van and a tesla in line i get i'm like okay tesla you know maybe it'll be quick They'll be more tech savvy because you don't want to get stuck behind somebody who's never used the toll machine.
27:50Jason Stewart:They don't know how to tap to pay. You know, they're pulling coins out of their purse and plunking them in one by one until you hit the$4.99. So I get behind the Tesla, but they can't figure it out. They're having a tough time. so i on on an open freeway put the car in reverse backed out of the toll road and then resorted myself into a different uh empty lane and it ended up working out well but i gotta say it's uh it gets your dick hard driving in reverse on a freeway oh yeah even though it is it is at a toll it's not just an open road that would be yeah but no one's psycho no one is immune to that kind of excitement i mean you know if you're doing that's that sounds that sounds great and i'm glad you saved that minute because that could have been i saved that minute but halfway through i i just i always tell carolyn to just fall asleep because i don't want her to see what i'm about to be yeah yeah yeah yeah that's i mean it's it's i've i've seen this agree i've been a part of this uh in every way possible and i've seen what you're capable of and it's you know even though it is something to be proud of i could see some uh women actually some people just being like look look, I don't want to see this.
29:01You know, it's too aggressive. It's too aggressive.
29:03Jason Stewart:Yeah, I don't want to stereotype women like that. But women are more likely to tell you that it's a green light before you have a chance to even put your foot back. No, you don't say. You don't. No, yeah. That's never happened to me. That's crazy. It's crazy. All right, so Susan and Andy got married. Congratulations to them. Oh, yeah. What is your – that was last night. So are you feeling – are we getting a classic TJ hangover? What did we ingest? What did we not ingest? Okay, let's get into it. uh yeah wedding wedding yesterday susan and andy shout out to them great wedding in biarritz at the villa vignon the i forgot what it's called but the restaurant is called i would love to know their deep connection i would love i would love to know about their deep connection to biarritz but we don't have time for that so just keep we can just keep moving okay i didn't want i just been sobering here since the 70s i didn't want you to get caught i was Carolyn and I were the only people who had ever been to Biarritz at the wedding, as far as I know.
30:02Jason Stewart:It was old hat for us, of course, as we summered. We did our anniversary in San Sebastian two years ago and made the hike over to Biarritz, where we realized that we're more Biarritz people than San Sebastian. Even after my 23andMe revealing that I have deep history in the Basque region and the Spanish blood. Spanish heart. I was going to say, dude, that was so close. oh i'm so close to say that god wow we are sinking um yeah spanish blood english hat and uh let's see here yeah we came in we had we had the the rehearsal dinner of course which was at this really cute little wine bar in uh in a small town like 20 minutes out you we had some hold on you're saying they have they have wine bars that aren't in silver lake or downtown Manhattan you're saying these exist in European country yeah well they saw what we were doing over in Silver Lake and said we got yeah yeah that's what that's what it felt like to me for 8 ,000 years here but we didn't think that we never thought small plates and chill it for about 20 minutes before serving it no no no the servers are still rude it's the same concept it's the same concept yeah okay so there's okay we told them here's how you do this here's how you make a butter sculpture etc etc um yeah so we go into a little small town um first we we meet at the the little train station le petit train which is like a little train that drives around the city so you get to see all the sights of of biaritz you know all the casinos where uh serbian sex traffickers work and here and there ba da bing ba da boom everyone in biaritz is the hottest person you've ever seen and they have no sense you know they're just they're just hot they're not dumb they're they're cool nice amazing smart people but like the word hot dummy kind of comes into mind because they're just they're living in a remote beach town and they're you know everyone's job is like i sell bob marley t-shirts or like you know i scoop ice cream cones or whatever and this is my job but everyone is just like a tan surfer blonde hair blue eyes just everyone is just a a beautiful person it's it's an amazing little land yeah so then yeah we go to this little wine bar there's a piano player who is doing piano covers he was amazing like he he was doing some of his own stuff but then there was some requests that they put in he was playing elliot smith songs on piano he did a little jess buckley but he was also doing like pimp by 50 cents you know something for everybody he was it was all over the place they're like people would do uh they were doing they did some of the speeches before on the first night and then some on the second night and then um our friend max gave this really funny and you know tear-jerking speech it was really you know not a dry eye in the house and then as soon as it's done everyone's clapping and you know like snot hug crying each other and everyone's oh i gotta go have a cigarette it oh my god and then the piano player puts on i think it was the scientist by cold play and everyone's just like ah um and we had some vibes going let's keep the vibe going we had some nice little nice little light bites um i felt bad for our friend miles hendrick and leah his wife they're they're both uh veggies and we're we're eating just like pate and you know strange muscles and with induja sauce and like oh here's the salad finally with anchovy dressing you know like you can relate to this in europe oh for sure right for sure yeah i mean that's that's why i try to only go to london put anchovy in the toothpaste here yeah there's a special edition marvis anchovy that i've avoided luckily the yeah the marvis pinchos uh it's a little green olive and anchovy But next door, there was a Japanese, a Japuanaz artisanal restaurant where they were nice enough to bring out the vegan ramen bowl.
34:12Oh, hell yeah.
34:13Jason Stewart:Over next door, tap to pay in the courtyard. That's beautiful. We're slurping, you know, beautiful vegan ramens and enjoying cigarettes with our different pâtés and other pâtés. And then, yeah, next day, wedding. honestly perfect service i really like how they did it allison roman was the officiant of it she let's be let's be you know allison roman can cook but bitch can talk too i don't you know you guys might not know her irl but let me just say something she's she's nasty with the pen as a i called today i said you are you're a great cook but you are a content creator first and foremost yeah so i mean i know she has sub stack but it's it doesn't it's not obviously the delivery is the written word versus the spoken yeah she can orate and and you know we've known each other from the beginning of our careers to now and she's only gotten better with time you know only gotten better i agree like the local beaujolais that i've been slurping on yes of course of course all right so she they they only touch oak for about three weeks so roman's running the show basically roman's running the show and it's a it's a it's a non-religious ceremony and she comes out and they they they give each other the rings just like a ring thing there's no weird funny business or anything of that they both do their vows to each other really perfect nice vows they just let the bride and groom do all the work and then uh and then they were wise to to stick with beer and wine for because everyone started drinking at like 4 p.m and the the wedding went until two so we're we're having the birra moretis and more chilled funky reds and eating more pates and more anchovies and i'm not complaining at all all the food was good they had you know a little maybe a little sunchoke fritter with a pestilito or whatever you know a little a small lettuce leaf cup with an anchovy and some creme fraiche and local trout roe from the region and then uh a nice dinner we had some lamb some beautiful lamb and then around the dinner time part the uh you know well i did a good invention you know you know the wine mom move where we're gonna have all the girl girlies over and we're all gonna have wine and and key and then we put the little sometimes we get the the the not permanent sharpie where we write each other's name on the wine glass or we have the little charm bangle that we wrap around the stem well we're dealing with a charm baron here so i would hope there's we're dealing with the charm baron so of course you would expect nothing less but every guest everyone's name card was you know a hand written you know beautiful card that was very rustic and not you know overly fancy and then And it had a little, they made like a face out of like shells and little bits of hair and things like that.
37:16Jason Stewart:And I think her friend Lisa made them. But every single person had like a shell face sculpture made for each person. So like my little name card shell thing looks kind of like me. Which was sort of looking like, you know the guy, the Sesame Street guy who's like the mad scientist? Yeah, yeah, yeah. the beaker guy or something like that yeah beaker it's crazy to do a beaker big bird combo but that's i know my my my face card is giving big bird but my name card was giving bk l bk l um of course i kept that and saved it away but everyone also had a little kind of keychain beaded charm um i had of things that were involved on the property of the villa.
38:06Jason Stewart:So there's a donkey that lives on the property, a beautiful donkey. Okay. So there were little miniature bead woven donkey keychain kind of things and like little vegetables that they grow there in the garden or whatever. So we got the donkey keychain and I attached it to the stem of a wine glass and that's to let the people at table eight know that that's the one that has the molly water in it no cap this is a service i use all the time jason because you know i'm not like you i'm not super handy i don't have a toolbox thank god there's task rabbit so when i need some of my you know art hung or something put together maybe you know some shelving units or whatever it may be I always call TaskRabbit and a nice young person with a backpack stocked with tools and other useful items shows up and takes care of any problem I have.
39:03And the best part is I can search for them based on cost, skillset, availability, client reviews. So I know who's showing up. I know they're going to do a good job and I know I'm not going to have to, you know, kind of run away when they come inside.
39:14Jason Stewart:But Chris, I know how to do stuff. I'm handy. But then, you know, as you get older, time is money, money is time, certain projects, you know, the gate needs a new coat of black paint, you know, the it's been hot or whatever. I could do it, but it's starting to look pretty nice to go on TaskRabbit, pay a professional to come over and do it. The cleanup is going to be done. The disposal of the shit's going to be done. It's exactly what you want. And quite frankly, it's worth the money. Never hang another TV as long as you live. Just call TaskRabbit. When life happens, your to-do list grows. Get ahead of it now and get$15 off your first task at TaskRabbit.com on the TaskRabbit app using promo code HowLong.
39:52Taskers book up fast, especially for same-day tasks, so book trusted home help today. That's$15 off your first task using promo code HowLong with the TaskRabbit app or at TaskRabbit.com. Okay, that's nice.
40:06Jason Stewart:And then every wedding where the Molly water comes out, you have to have a nickname for it because you can't just be sort of chewing your own gums and asking somebody for, do you have that thing? Do you have that thing that I want? So we would say like, oh, Steve over here would like to try some of the donkey juice. And that's code for taking a little swig. And you want to also, because the molly can settle at the bottom of the stemware. So much like a local Chablis, give it a little spin around, see the legs on it. just to make sure that... Are you saying there's some sediment at the bottom of the donkey?
40:49Jason Stewart:There could be a little sediment just how your espresso might find in the bottom of the percolator. I get this. This is smart. So you want to, because you don't want to just start ripping bag at dinner because that's going to affect the coursing and it's going to affect your appetite. You're not really going to want to start sucking down that wood-fired lamb leg lamb shank um after a couple beautiful bumpies so you know just to set a molly water base and then we moved into the sea spritz nasal spray okay you know about this i i do know about this the math i mean yeah i don't yeah sea spritz feels like a bumble and bumble product from 2008 but i know that it means i know that it means cocaine in a nasal spray bottle that is easy to apply but the thing with that is jason and i don't i've never done that because it didn't exist in any real way during my time but here go old head what was it like back in the day coke unk the coke coke unk no i'm just saying coke unk is is gonna weigh in is gonna say i need the burn i need i want to feel it a little bit and when you do the when you do the nasal spray it's almost too seamless it's too slick of a process it takes this grit what you mean yeah we want a little friction we don't want it to be you know you want you want a little lube you don't want so much lube that it can't feel like you're having sex with a bathtub yeah no exactly i just that's all i'm saying but i mean i mean you sound i mean i guess it is quite late in the day there so you but you sound relatively 3 41 p.m you sound relatively recovered i'm sure you had a bangers and mash and then a couple of pints and and you're back to it i had all the wine and then uh the after party um our friend of the show alex chapman because he's he's old friends with susan they literally went to like high school or chicago old chicago old heads represent yeah he was talking about oh so funny i'm glad that we are chilling with alex because he's such a hoot but he's the he's the goat bro he's he was talking about um when he was 19 and like still like a twink or whatever um he was asked by virgil abloh to host a interview series for the rsvp store in in chicago rsvp gallery of course the famous um you know which is you know with ties to the bean trail mafia and other other pyrex familias my my boy my boy don see get your hats now yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah.
43:32Jason Stewart:And he was talking about interviewing Soulja Boy when he was 19 years old for the RSVC Gallery YouTube channel. And you could still, if you go on YouTube and search Alex Chapman Soulja Boy, there's a video of it. It's still up there, apparently. I haven't seen it yet. But he was telling me about the good old days and when Virgil would throw his parties. he was like underage and he would have to go in with him like two hours before the club started and hide underneath the dj booth until doors open so he could sneak in and there's he was showing me old photos of him like meeting mia and like having her sign a t-shirt and you know such such sweet stories but he he was the dj who was tasked to sort of open it and then they had a local sort of horny french dj who is going to be like the the the party dj so alex is is doing a great job of course he's an amazing wedding dj on top of regular uh djing and he's killing it and then uh it's time for him to switch over and then the the the local regional dj who's nobody knew who he was or knew anything about him he shows up and he's he's wearing like kind of like a kitsune a pesse like 2009 outfit like white sneaker tight denim jean valsity jacket he's got like a bob haircut shows up to the wedding on a motorcycle helmet in hand so he's sort of serving Kavinsky boots also the piano player played fucking Kavinsky night call I was like bro you playing Kavinsky on a piano diddy at a wedding he's like kovinsky that's really funny dude that's really he was glad that i clocked his kovinsky um uh everyone would whenever he would play a new song at the wedding everyone would look at me and because i was able to identify the song very quickly because i have an encyclopedia this happened to me this happened to me dj brain this happened to me when the banjo player the guitar player in the lobby at the trinchera played jason isbel i was the only one that recognized it so i kind of understand where i understand where you're coming from the cap to a fellow musician from one player to another exactly exactly exactly um so so frenchy guy gets out there and he actually is doing a great job he's playing you know like inspector norse he's playing the right madonna songs kylie minogue is going well and but then it starts kind of dying down maybe around 1 a.m 12 31 a.m it's going till 2 and everyone is sort you know the part of the wedding because every wedding they're like oh this crowd's a party crowd we're gonna go fucking crazy and all night literally every every wedding is like oh you're not ready you're not fucking ready and then you know people people start kind of falling off also you know we're we're we're older we're we're not it's not a bunch of people who are 21 it's it's millennials millennial folks and up so it kind of dies down everyone wants to kind of hang out outside it's a beautiful garden we want to you know chain smoke and whatever it is enjoy our sea spray mists and they're and carolyn's like okay uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh susan wanted to know if you might want to you know sort of revive and resuscitate oh hell no they said Big Bird needs to get to work god damn it Big Bird needs to earn his pate and I said I just gave away my last cigarette so what else am I gonna do let's get retarded in here and then so I go up to Frenchie and basically they had a song that Susan really wanted to hear um let me pull it up there was so the guy is playing like like i said he's playing nice good you know interesting music and it's it's fine it's all working out fine but sometimes things just peter out and you need some new energy it's not even like that's just how parties work peter started petering and then susan wants to hear dolly babes pink blush are you familiar with this person i know you guys think i'm gay i've never heard of that one um i don't know much about dolly babe pink blush definitely might be a fully ai generated character i have no idea it doesn't dolly babe doesn't i don't know dolly dolly babe two million listeners on spotify she's out here um but still i don't know i'm sort of detecting a little ai whatever it's just like a ratchet hood you know glorilla ass song you know what i mean okay just to get all the hoes out you know we're talking about lip liners okay and there's been fake spin that ai spin that yes okay the the hook of the song is she invents a new word phrase where she says got him going crazy for that poo na na na na which beautiful but it's yeah so and then so it's like a lot of kind of sing songy word play and it's a song about makeup and pussy I guess but so I they're like do you have a dongle so we can play this song for Susan off of your phone and nobody has un petit dongle and then I look at the mixer and I realize that it's the newer one the dja mixer that has bluetooth capabilities oh shit let's fucking go who knew france had device don't let jeans over here let me pair my device oh nah so i paired down i play this song and then all the ratchet hoochie mama bitches come out onto the dance floor everyone's going crazy and then and then the so the french sexy dj guy i'm like bro you know sorry but But she wants to hear the song.
49:48Jason Stewart:I got to play it. And then when the song, you know, like every, you know, it's a minute and 48 seconds long or whatever. And I'm like, so I'm going to play this song. And then when it's done in 90 seconds, I'm going to probably start DJing. And he's like, oh, thank God. I don't have any of this hood shit.
50:13Jason Stewart:Oh, that's really funny. And then I'm like, okay, good. i'm just gonna start playing and then you know then we we but alex had a lot of hood you know he he's in his bag he's in his dem franchise boys bag so when i'm thinking about the amount of interactions that you've had telling djs that their time is up it's it's it's like it's it's probably a number i can't tally no because the the amount of times i've told people because of just like running parties for hundreds yeah that's what i mean that's what i mean even when i'm not about to go on the amount of times where i'm like hey uh hey you know crookers remix you're you're out of here bud or whoever it may be hey uh rye rye we're all set we're all set time to shove off so that's funny but he was so stoked he was like thank god now i can go like you know smoke cigarette and lurk some baddies at this wedding you can and then uh and then alex and i I kind of did a little B2B for a while.
51:12Jason Stewart:And then for the last, you know, 45, I gave Alex, he had to catch an early flight. He had like a 7 a.m. flight. I felt so bad for the guy. So sent him off and we pulled his USB. And then I went sort of into, you know, indie rock mode. I'm doing the Yumi 'i Worlds and, you know, the strokes and all that shit. didn't do block party didn't felt didn't feel right for it well um and then you know bring it down for some some ballads at the end it was it was a beautiful beautiful time had a really fun time even though there's no booth monitor and one of the cdjs was broken and i had the the play button wasn't working this is why we have it you know how much i like to tap that button that's your number one go-to but this is why we got this is why we call on a pro because you can deal with these issues on the fly it's not a big deal yeah and then um at the end they did a nice you know the the food the little midnight snack kind of parting gift thing they they did some sort of like kind of japanese milk bread sandwiches but like italian vibe it was actually kind of interesting i never had it before but just like the standard maybe like italian or french ingredients you know like here's a sandwich with some arugula and olive oil and some tomato slices and you know know maybe a little mortadella kind of thing but it's in the you know a little burrata but it was all in like super pillowy soft milk bread kind of vibe it was it was very nice it was very interesting in a nice little sort of wax paper bag that you can a parcel that you can take home oh yeah i'm sure you were i'm sure you were starving at that point um i could eat a horse a very small horse don't bring up horses right now not while i'm colorado believe it or not not all of the hundred sandwiches were eaten you know okay okay well look you got to over prepare just in case you never know you know people people's intake is different you know people's intake is different we accounted for everything but yeah it was you know when and then we shoved off home hit the sack woke up and uh you know well of course you have the you have the hangover brunch you know hangover brunch back at the villa where i was able to enjoy some very small artisanal cups of coffee yeah of course yeah yeah the daddy wanted a venti the desperation i'm having for a maru right now is it's it's unbelievable unbelievable i went to the actually i went to the new maru in williamsburg uh the other day oh because it's next door to kathleen it's next door to sorbaros and i was having a meeting with kathleen at her store and i was like oh i didn't realize it was right here let's go man they spent it looks so nice they did such a good job i was really impressed but i'm i mean i'm sure it gets fucking lit with fucking dog owners and shit you know what i mean it was it was a we were we were there on like a wednesday at 2 p.m so it was reasonable but i was anyway my point is i'm i'm craving a fourth wave and i'm sure you are too oh i'm craving a fourth wave like right before we did this podcast i was in the lobby because we checked out so we're just kind of you know we're free floating carolyn's at the pool um doing her thing and i'm in here potting it up but i was like oh i go to the to the bar i'm like can i get an iced coffee and he's like yeah we can do that we can do that and he brings out the kind of tall highball glass and fill the iced coffee is maybe a quarter of the way up the glass and there's three quarters of it and there's no ice whatsoever it is the coffee is cold and it was enjoyable but i brought it he brought it out and i was like i'm really sorry but like can i have more coffee is there is there a way where you fill the glass up with what i ordered instead of only a quarter of the way and he's like what do you mean like you want water or you want more and i was like more coffee in the cup and we we eventually got there um but yeah you know the coffee is the coffee is no good no it's a rural colorado rural colorado and biarritz i didn't think there'd be much in common uh but coffee quality is one of those things but you know it's fine now i know how to order an americano in french along yes i actually i knew that sadly you may have a cultural old guy like you probably oh yeah you know you know me i'm just so tapped into culture fuck it's crazy dude it's fucking crazy yeah i got my elongate on i i finished my but also on the on the plus side when you order a a glass of shit coffee they always bring like a little chocolate treat alongside it you know what i mean like a small little they think it's going to offset the coffee and to some people who maybe can't resist that little treat it does but for someone like me who leaves that proudly on the saucer you're not fool you're not fooling me chocolate chocolate don't get me that hard i mean it gets me very very hard but just not in that situation that's the thing it's just this is the wrong shocking shocking yeah you've never eaten a meal with me you don't see my eyes bulge out like wiley coyote when the dessert comes you've never you've never seen that give me that milk give me that milk chocolate you don't want that dark cacao do you unfortunately i'll take any of it at this point but i've been dark dark chocolate was not like i'll take fish scale stepped on exactly yeah formula got diesel gasoline in there whatever you got we're good anyway break me off yeah the you definitely know you're in france when you turn the tv on and there's the you know tv streaming you know concierge room service and then there's one button that you could select that was called chocolatier oh that's nice that's nice i think so i love that like they prioritize chocolate so much that it ordering chocolate is not part of the room service menu it has its own separate subdivision category just for ordering chocolates to your to your i think i think now that i now that pulling weeds is over i think maybe chocolatier is my i think this this could be a good pivot for me just just because i agree i love chocolate i've never made it before but i could deliver it you know what i mean like i don't need to i don't need to necessarily be sweating it out in the kitchen but i could put on what what is a chocolatier outfit and show up at your house kind of with the goods chris black in the lint chocolatiers outfit i could i mean lint down yeah because everyone is like oh we're you know we're starting a wine company or i'm starting a coffee company or i'm doing it you don't really hear a lot or olive oil whatever it is chocolatier i don't know anyone who's a chocolatier well let me say this we're starting to 20 a piece this shit is the only the top top top so you get you can order one piece this ain't crumble i ain't bringing you a whole box you know you get one piece for 20 you get one piece for 20 this shit is special crumble okay well speaking of crumble your your gq career has crumbled you got the axe oh buddy I saw the Twitter announcement some people are up in arms they're upset other people you know the Taylor Lorenz of the world maybe they're less upset about it oh that's fine I don't I mean look I'm not no one no one is I haven't tricked anyone into thinking I'm a great writer with a necessary voice but I do believe that data centers couldn't be bad um that's another that's a whole nother issue uh no i just i was just sort of like i i i was it happened it happened a little while ago but the jake shake the jake shane thing had been in the pipes for a while and those kind of those levels those level of pr people don't really let you be like hey sorry you know it's it's kind of like you said you said you were going to do this we know where you live um but you know so that was it but i did don't cross a pr bitch but I did find it funny that that was the final installment.
59:14I thought it felt, it felt spiritually appropriate.
59:17Jason Stewart:Couldn't be more fitting. It felt like the ending of tar. It did. I have. It was, it felt like beautifully, beautiful and poetic, but I wish, I wish there was, I wish I'd done something wrong, but I think it's just a classic, like, Hey, this is the old guy's guy. I don't want his voice on my, on my website, which is, which is like what you did wrong. You asked for money in exchange for goods and services. people are like budget cuts. I'm like, And Kanye Nass said, ooh, I don't know if I like that. I was like, budget cuts? Like, they ain't paying me enough for that to affect the bottom line. Let me tell you that right now.

59:50They'd save more money taking the Diet Cokes out of the fridge than fucking cutting me off. So it's fine.
59:55Jason Stewart:And they said, if you think we ain't paying you enough now, wait until you see what this shit is hitting for. Oh, it's so funny. Post-Welch. It's so funny. Well, do you want to let, I mean, everyone is tuning into this episode because they want to know, you know, what your plans are. You know, are we sniffing around? Are we getting offers? Obviously, everyone is, you know, people, the heads of Substack, everybody who works at Substack who's listening to this right now. The best response to my tweet about the final pulling weeds was someone from Substack high up just responded lit. She knows how to get to you, doesn't she?
1:00:34i was like that's funny as hell uh no i mean i'm gonna talk to some people i'm gonna keep doing it for sure i mean i think it's like there's a home for it that is different and that's fine and i don't know i don't know i mean i have three meetings next week so we'll see what happens i
1:00:49Jason Stewart:mean you know what okay well we we can't really if we have meetings in the works then we can't really uh say anything more because we don't want to well like i've said a million times before i I don't know if people want to support me. So I'm keeping that in mind as I venture out into the open market. Yeah. Yeah. How long gone? Chris Black and Jason Stewart, we do not thrive on patronage from individuals. You guys will pay for way worse stuff. But for some reason, we're just not the thing. Look, I wouldn't want to give me money either. I get it. And that's why we take it from brands. That's why we take it from.

We're going to get a couple more sprinkled in, I think. I was just thinking yesterday how fun it was. I was like, I like Dinosaur Jr. just fine, but I love watching them play live. So good live. Barlow, no shoes on, just fucking ripping the bass. They were so good at that Wilco Festival. All three people in the band, it sounds like there's a 10-piece band.
1:04:27Jason Stewart:It's a wall of sound. It's just three guys just mastering their craft. It's lit. They played a bunch of shows this week in New York, like Lucinda's and shit, like what Morby did.
