In short

Conversation with fashion stylist Kate Young about raising kids in New York, her sons’ music/graffiti pursuits, and her views on luxury branding and fake designer markets; plus broader banter on AI/podcasting, celebrity culture, and reality TV.

Guest backgrounds

Kate Young is a New York-based fashion stylist (20 years in the industry). She lives with her husband and has two sons: one freshman at CalArts (experimental pop/music production) and a 16-year-old urbex/graffiti artist with a DJ/record-label family background.

Key claims

Saying feelings out loud is “terrifying” but central to Hinge’s free audiobook No Ordinary Love (five couples met on Hinge). Kate argues luxury value is largely “aura”-based and that fake markets can become hierarchical. She says doctors pushed her to lift weights for health/aging.

Notable examples

CalArts parties/halloween culture; CalArts dorm life near a pool/gym; China “fake malls” and bootleg Hermes/Rolex stories; “Love Is Blind” as widely relatable; Jennifer Aniston’s “hypnotist” boyfriend rumor; discussion of US Open fashion/celebrity moments.

0:02Saying how you feel out loud is terrifying. But that's what Hinge's new free audiobook, No Ordinary Love, is all about. It's a collection of real love stories about five couples that met on Hinge. The stories are written and read by Tembi Dinton Hurst, Nicola Dinan, Curtis Garner, Raven Smith, and Rufi Thorpe. I, Hunter Harris, wrote and read the foreword. The audiobook's out now. Give it a listen.

0:47how long gone uh it is a beautiful tuesday morning here in los angeles the sun's shining it's only warmer last yesterday in malibu yesterday afternoon but we made it through i met a horse named freckles um and uh now we're here podcasting you you're in malibu right now no i'm in west hollywood i was in malibu yesterday shooting and there was a i met we were on a ranch so i met a horse named freckles which i thought was a great name for a great name for a horse really good name for a horse it's so cool we we really are sinking i'm i'm currently in a horse area as well in the middle of the horse area horse area a horse area of ireland a city called abil abilay okay i believe at at the almost o-m-o-s guest house and what a dream got here a few hours ago had the uh the volvo xc90 drop drive us in from dublin through the beautiful countryside dropped everything off visited the culinary garden visited the chef um whose whose name is spelled c u a n i believe is that coon uh i'm not i'm not gonna i'm not gonna attempt that because there's definitely i think we're both wrong no matter what we say but it is so i'll spell i don't i've never seen that yeah i think a spelling is the safest choice here in this in this instance cuin cuin great anyway he's a great guy he showed us around the garden you know we're we're hanging out checking out the kabocha squashes and the fennel fronds and this and that had a beautiful um biscuit and a beautiful flapjack which is sort of what irish people call um a nature valley oats and honey bar i've had a flat i love chewy no i've had many flapjacks they're very popular in london at the off-license.

2:43I fucking love them. There's a certain brand I really like. I've talked to Sean about it a lot, and you can't find them anywhere in America. It's very strange. Oh, Chris Black, a known flapjack lover. There's a cranberry one I really like. There's several flavors from this one brand, but I have some sweet, some a little, all are a little sweet, but there's nothing too crazy. There's no like chocolate that I've seen. It's mostly fruit-based. Yeah, mine was fruit-based. Yeah, it was a little butchery, not too sweet, not too savory, just a just a nice little right down the middle but we did visit the oldest pub around called morrissey the morrissey it's an old this motherfucker is 250 years old it's as old as donald trump's america how to smell in there oh it smelled ripe like um was there was there carpet no carpet it was all every every single bit of it was was wood the floor the ceiling the this I mean, that does make sense.

3:38So it did smell old, but it was a very clean place. So it just kind of had that vintage warmth to it. And it was a beautiful smell, but just full of all those little knickknacks and things everywhere. And obviously the finest pint of Guinness that we were poured on this journey. I would hope. I mean, what's the point otherwise? Because you're out here having pints and we've got a crisis in the podcasting world. you know so it's i don't i don't you know a crisis in the podcasting world the movie podcast is under attack because because the pod father bill simmons is doing chat gpt ads they're having to answer for it you know in real time it's it's it's a crisis and i i need i need you to be serious jason this is no joke if you okay if you want to talk about you know the odyssey for four hours and a reader mailbag and you can't even advertise chat gpt what's the point you know what i mean like what's the fucking what's the point man what's the point i i've i've been following this story closely and i'm i'm confused that there there seems to be like he calls it chat ebt because it's it's roger ebert yeah i guess i'm very confused i'm very confused as a as a person who doesn't watch movies or listen to that podcast i'm confused as to what the drama is about yeah i think i think he called well i guess the drama is people well i know what the drama is i guess i guess so yes Some people are upset with chat GPT and open AI, and they don't like the impending AI revolution that is going to kill us all.

5:11in just a few months of, you know, if you read articles, if the hurricanes are not going to get us, then the AI cluster server chat groups that are starting and forming and killing each other, creating diversions for the cybersecurity people to set, you know, AI traps to signal to their other people. So basically like three different odysseys have already played out by AI agents already and and that's just the one that we know about and the one that people have like you know they have told us about so you know there's a there's a decent chance that we're all going to die soon um because of this ai so i understand why people are upset about it but for now chat gptbert is so awesome i'm like yo what is the name of the actor in dumb and dumber oh jim carrey that's right you know it gives you all this info or you're like how long is that movie and you ask it and it's like boom 96 minutes can i ask a question can i ask a question is is that podcast free to listen to it is correct yeah i think so yeah i think so all right well you know then shut the fuck up that's kind of where we're going with that that's kind of where we're going with that yeah well i mean if you want to join if you want to join uh uh you know a group like that the the ringer verse or the barstool network or whatever side of the of the bipartisan you gotta know what comes with it yeah then like if you got a boss you got to do what the boss does and if you don't like it leave and start your own podcast it's so easy you get a laptop and a microphone and you hit upload only on spotify baby unfortunately the warm hug of the ringer network is i'm sure that that embrace is tough to leave i can only imagine uh but yeah i just found that i mean some people love the stability of being a salary man or a salary them or a salary person and some people crave the independence of an independent content creator like you and i with a beautiful partnership with our friends at the talkhouse network which allow us to let our nuts hang freely and flap our wings as we wish i just yeah i've been following the amount i've seen this on my time brought to you by yahoo scout the amount that i've seen this on my timeline as a person who doesn't like movies is is unbelievable i mean i guess i guess i do follow talk easy closely because you know sam's a friend but i was just like man this is i'm seeing this it's like it's like the towers went down for nerds it's unbelievable the amount i'm saying well it's they're they're all friends and we we know all of them i've hung out with all of them we've podcasted with almost all of them um but but i think because they're both with network sam is with um the obamas and and uh and amanda and sean are with um bill bill simmons so they have those you know they have that money behind it they have that vc money or some someone's money is behind it there are millions of dollars behind it and people with interest behind it and those are the people that create things on the algorithm those are the the people that have chat bots to start oh i don't think no no i no you're now you're i don't know no no i this is i'm it is a little conspiratorial it's very conspiratorial i open up my my twitter i open up my twitter and it is just you know accounts with no followers fake blue checks all this shit having this immense discourse post after post after post after post being fed to me defending attacking both sides i think we're i think we're this war and i think we're underestimating how popular this podcast is and how big nerds are but i i think both things can be true because i i'm also not clicking it i'm not clicking in to see follower counts i'm just seeing people things are true both things i mean it's just weird when you're losing their minds yeah like we're we're trying to make reaction gifts out of i mean yeah i mean i like amanda whenever i see her at a party we hang out and have a good chat but you know it's not a good reaction she turns her head from the right it's not a big enough reaction and with the i don't i don't get it and and you know i i think things are trying to be fabricated and um you know i also that's how these podcasts grow i mean if it's if it's not about the show it's about the clip and all it is is just a bunch of clips yeah no i mean that's true that's true i um i also clip clip clip i also wanted to talk about um how stupid no me osaka looked in that outfit um i'm glad we have a fashion stylist on our episode today so we can discuss this and so much more we can't let this keep happening you can't let somebody go to a press conference and say how much i hate attention and then wear the ugliest clothes you've ever seen to get attention and make someone carry your tennis bag i i don't know if i've ever seen anyone walk out onto the u.s open court not carrying the tennis bags yeah because of her look she had to have somebody carry the bags and that just feels that just feels crazy to me yeah and and the look on her on her face it looks you know when you know when the camera when when john galiana realizes he's being filmed saying um nazi stuff and he looks really upset that's she has the same she has a 10 times worse look she is so upset for a stadium full of people cheering her name hates it she hated it but i mean i i guess she won which is good everything is a bummer she said well it was dedicated to alan iverson her inspiration so let's not forget that jason i didn't know i didn't know they have alan iverson in japan i didn't know why i think it's an age thing too i'm a little bit like i know you know he said he hates practice which i'm sure she does too he retired before she was alive definitely she's a hoop lover i don't know 100 but yeah that is yeah i mean does she maybe her it was her whoever her law roaches maybe it was it was their decision and law roach if you're listening come on the pod i'm a full roachiana now i don't i'm good uh but the um yeah it's it's gonna be between that and carlos alcaraz's nipple it's been a big US Open so far.

11:11We're not even into the... Yeah, we got to see some side titty off of that big, nice, hunky Carlos. And also, I feel like he buzzed his hair four months ago, and now his hair is longer than Davide's. He's growing hair. It's unbelievable how good he is at growing hair. I don't... I just... I just making him... They're really trying to make him a sex symbol, and I just... I just can't find it. I just can't see it. And I know that it's better for... That makes one of us, honey. I know it's better for the sport if he is, but I'm just like I just don't I don't know man there's something he's too goofy he wears too much he wears like team Jordans you know what I mean he gets like he wears the wrong he wears the wrong stuff I know which is our greatest brand it makes him a hot dummy for me and I know that it is very divided on if people are attracted to him or not but something about his hot dumminess you know like I feel like the first time he's gonna have sex he won't know what to do and it's gonna you know like he's he's very robotic but he's also so bronze and muscular and he can you know he's he doesn't know like addition or subtraction but if somebody was like hey can you do a handstand push-up he'll do it the first try you know what i mean yeah definitely oh definitely yeah i mean his warm-ups are amazing when he's he's just locked in doing the wildest shit you've ever seen with his headphones on just like not not acknowledging his trainer at all who's like putting extreme pressure on his hip or whatever um i need help with my side plank we have a very prompt guest say kate young is a as a stylist she's in new york we met recently and she said and i quote i know who you are which made me feel bad i think that means that something bad has happened but we're gonna we'll get to the bottom of it today we'll get to the bottom of it today let's uh let's give her a call okay no cap this is a service i use all the time jason because I'm not like you.

Okay, so your summer's over. it's back to the grind yeah um i was just in la because my older son moved into college this weekend you have a son that's in college yeah what school um he's a freshman at cal arts oh shit cal arts serious business did you give him the ketamine speech yet be careful what's the ketamine speech like only do it with me only do it with your mommy okay what is okay what is what is it's it's a he it's a son yeah i have two boys okay what is he attending cal arts for what is his discipline music and his major is experimental pop and music production holy shit that you can okay so he's going to script he's going to minor in skrillex uh yeah yeah okay what kind of music does he is is he sorry go ahead what is it yeah i would like i would i would love to know what cal arts classifies as experimental pop honestly that's i'm not even kidding like what death grips honestly i don't know um here i'll tell you the trajectory a little bit um so he was like a classical classical viola player okay and went to la guardia and played in like elite symphonies in new york city was like very into the viola until he was not and he was like this isn't cool sure well i really realized i can't get no pussy off the viola i wasn't gonna say that he doesn't have a lot of he doesn't have a lot of problems in that department luckily oh shit but like it's not it's not like chill like there's nobody i can chill with here beating them off with a bow is what you're saying um he he's good um but he was just like i don't i don't want to play viola for the rest of my life and i was like too bad because that's how you're getting into college so like go to viola practice um and he was like uh well he started messing around producing his own music and yeah started talking about producing music and we sent him to summer camp where they taught him how to use i guess ableton there are two he one he was using before and the other one he learned at music camp and he like produced all this music and got really into it so when it came time in fall last year to apply to college he was like listen i'm not applying to any conservatories i'm gonna apply to like all these music production programs but a lot of them he still like auditioned with viola because that's like his skill right and he chose cal arts a lot really largely because he didn't have to play viola anymore like it's a straight pop and music production thing like he worked in a recording studio all last summer like that's what he wants to do he wants to make like beats i don't know hip-hop i think okay it sounds like he wants to he wants to be like like the corked up white boy who's got like rosalia song credits type of thing yeah probably yeah he's making dope experimental beats and he's a musical phenom if he can master a viola then he can definitely make a fucking hip-hop beat yeah i mean viola i mean if you want to get in the nitty-gritty viola kind of is like a bad instrument to do when you're learning music because it's in it viola is in the f clef i guess and like piano and music theory and everything you need to know is in the g clef is that right did i get my clefs right i'm not i'm we're we're clef free here we don't know i actually don't know about the viola clef okay yeah his dad is it is music so that's like none None of this is for me.

19:32Oh, okay. Okay. So is dad is a musician or just a lover? No, Mexican summer, Chris. Yeah, yeah. You met my husband at that party. Oh, oh, oh. From Mexican summer as my husband. Yes. I'm sorry. Jeff told me that when we left and I forgot. So thank you for telling me again. Okay. So yeah, he's fine. He introduced me to Dunien back in the day. Dunien are the best. Tadalong. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're good guys. I'm sure they are. Wow. Okay. This is cool. This is great. So CalArts is a very cool school. He's on the east side. He's going to have a bunch of great, awesome, interesting friends. Do you know what city he's living in?

20:09He lives in, it's like Valencia, which is part of Santa Clarita. Oh. Because he's in the dorm this year. Oh, you made him go to the dorm? You couldn't pony up for the apartment or they got to do dorm? No, freshmen have to live in the dorm. Yeah. But meanwhile, there's like a pool out front of his door and a gym next door, which are like the two he just wants to be he's a little bit like jersey shore or like gym tan laundry hold on this guy has it all i is he looking for friends because i'm available so he's so he can his he can deadlift more than chris and he's mastered the viola jesus fuck yeah i used to go to cal arts parties back in the day they would have these infamous halloween parties yeah that's what we heard i saw the far side play there one time like way back in the day and you would just like drive up and it was almost like a woodstocky kind of thing you would like people from far and wide would come over there and you like pay 20 bucks and you get a plastic cup and instead of like kegs it's like pinot and chablis and stuff like that i'm not joking that's amazing it's like all you can drink all you can drink natty natty orange that's really hilarious well he's set up for success i feel like but you're right it's it reminds me of when someone dedicates their entire life to sort of a niche olympic sport when there's no possibility of financial upside no matter how good you are at it the viola feels like yeah it just he went my both my kids went to waldorf school and they had to be in string orchestras starting in third grade and they would like have them play all the instruments and then pick one so he picked viola because it sounds good like it's easier he didn't want to carry the cello and it sounds better than a violin because the violin's really squeaky when you don't know how to play it and like he was good at it god's plan so he did really well at it and he played all the time and that was great until he was like i don't want to do this yeah you guys got lucky with your kids i gotta say well done good parenting well let's let's unless this all happened organically all right so raising kids in new york are they too precocious is he done too much too soon oh yeah i have a 16 year old son too who's like an urbex graffiti artist so like yeah they're like me at like 28 so these motherfuckers these motherfuckers are lit like they're out here yes is your 16 year old going out like at night yes do you know what he writes um he just changed it this summer hold on i can i can tell you based god that's so crazy i can't even imagine my mommy knowing what i wrote when i was a fucking when i was 16 listen here's the thing his dad has a record label and used to be a dj and he has me as a mom so like if he were bad at graffiti i would not let this go on his graffiti is amazing you're like look son i love you but this you're you're a toy you're a toy you can't do this shit anymore and it's dangerous right your mother did not raise a toy young man but like i think it's a valid pursuit when like he loves it and he's clearly good at it and getting bigger like getting better at it and stuff but we have a lot of rules like he has to like text me before he goes into anywhere dangerous send me his coordinates turn on the Life360.

23:20Weirdly, in all the abandoned train stations, there's Wi-Fi. So he also FaceTimes me from down there a lot. I gotta say, that seems like a good way to get caught by logging into the subway Wi-Fi. He's got the Arteryx with the hood up and he's underground. He doesn't wear Arteryx. He wears like Chrome hearts because they're like opium style. You know? I'm like really suited to your bro podcast, right? For the listeners at home, Kate just said opium style with quotations around opium style. You're talking about rapper Playboy Cardi's crew and the look that comes along with that. Correct. It's sort of goth hip hop.

24:05Yeah. No, you're not wrong. Now, is he able to obtain this opium look on his own or are you assisting him in getting the opium style? So my younger son has incredible personal style. And even from like the age of two had the sickest personal style, like made himself a choker. He's amazing with clothes. Okay. Amazing. I will say they both got really into like designer clothes. And last year I went to China on a press tour and I definitely assisted because we went to the fake mall. and like everybody i was with on the press tour was like buying you know louis vuitton and chanel bags and i was buying like margela and um tons of prom hearts like all these hypebeast sneakers that are like travis scott sneakers for like 50 bucks you're looking for all the rick yeah so like i bought a suitcase while i was there and filled it with all that stuff so they also have like the watch collections of billionaires.

25:12They wear like APs that, you know, they cost 25 bucks. Okay, hold on, hold on. This is both good and bad parenting because you're doing the right thing. You're doing the right thing by making your child happy, but you have to walk around knowing your son's in fake chrome and you can sleep at night with that. Okay, but my friend is really good friends with the people who own chrome and apparently they like it. Of course. They're like, it adds to it, it's fabulous. They're like, I wipe my ass with$100 bills, so have fun bootlegging whatever you guys want to do. Yeah, you do whatever you want. Okay.

25:47That does make you feel better and me feel better at the same time. But I've never been to China or the fake malls. How robust is the offering? It's insane. I mean, listen, everyone I was with was dying and buying so much. we're talking about a shopping mall with like a sneaker store that's selling every sneaker you know and they're all fake and belt stores with i mean anything you can think of they have fake so it all looks pretty fucking good a lot of it i think is real it's like no it's like stolen from people in the factory or people in the shippers i mean there were things there were things there with Corso Como tags on them.

26:32Like, why would you make a fake T-shirt? Because China's that far advanced. No, they were going to Corso Como and somebody stole it off. No, you're not making a Corso Como. Yeah. And Corso Como needs that stuff. Every week I hear a new story about how Chinese Rolexes for 500 are now indistinguishable. You can take them into Rolex dealerships and they'll service them for you. yeah like i don't believe that no those are swiss watches really they don't make them in swiss no more that shit is china now really and also with uh with like high like high level like tour de france racing bicycles all those italian bike making companies that sell like twenty thousand dollar road bikes they're all made in china now so all these chinese factories are just starting bicycle companies they're saying like here's china bicycles now it's the same exact bicycle except it's 2 ,000 instead of 20 ,000 and everyone's just buying them.

27:31We just don't care anymore. I care. I can't do it. There's no way. I just can't. I just can't do it. I got into this whole thing in my head where I left those fake malls. I was having a good time buying my kids all the stuff they like. I was like, oh my god, this is amazing. I mean, that's very pretentious, but I really don't need any fake designer stuff. I have been working as a fashion stylist for 20 years. Like I haven't paid for a handbag in years. Like, you know, like same girl, I don't need that stuff, but I was sitting watching people negotiate between like a Louis Vuitton bag and an Hermes bag, both fake.

28:08And they're charging more for the fake Hermes bag, which was 100 % fake. And the Louis Vuitton, some of them are sort of made in China and finished in Italy or France, but the Chinese ladies charging more for the Hermes. And I was like, there's a hierarchy in the fakes. Like, how? Based on advertising, based on Aura. Like, what is a brand and how does it apply also to fakes? And like, I mean, there's a huge, it really messed with my head. Like, what's the meaning of all of this stuff? Because these handbags don't cost$6 ,000 to make, right? So we're buying the marketing. But like, are you buying the design?

28:51because that's what you're buying if you're buying fake, right? You couldn't buy the design. With the real actual luxury brands, it's a completely made-up fake market based on everything that you just said. And the world of fakes has become so big that it also has its same sort of microclimate of none of this is based on anything and it is just an aura-based value system and we set a price based on whatever we think it should be and you're still willing to pay it. I think we're underestimating just demand is, I'm sure, the real factor. Like, if it's selling more, we're going to charge more. And I mean, I imagine the Birkin is the most want-desired fake or real bag in the world, I would assume.

29:34And it's like a tricky one because, you know, only Hermes can validate whether they're Hermes or fake. And if they're fake, they destroy them. Just like your fake ID at the bar? Yeah, so it's like tricky. Like you can't prove that a bag's fake. Which almost hurts Hermes. So you're saying if I roll in with my Pharrell men's fucking big boy Hermes bag and they say it's fake, they yank that shit off my little shoulder and light it on fire in the back room. Yeah, they cut it up or something. Yeah. They take a Chinese exacto to that bitch. Honestly, I would love to see that. I want that to happen to me.

30:16I might buy one just to imagine. Actually, when your 16-year-old son releases his first music video for his opium rap style music career, that is a good visual. And you could use Chinese AI to create it. Okay, he's not making any music. He's only doing graffiti. Either way, one of your sons needs to film themselves like pissing on a Birkin and lighting it on fire. I didn't know. That's actually really, I did not know that. But I can't imagine the joy that one of those sales associates at Hermes gets every time. What a gift. because all you're doing if you work at Hermes the tug of war between the handle the crying moment.

30:52You're saying no to people and you're cutting up bags and everything else is easy. That's a great job. What a dream. Totally. So you're saying you have a closet full of bags but when do you reach for the big boys or do you keep the big boys? Like how big is your day to day? Do you have a laptop size bag you're carrying around during the day? Oh, you mean a big bag? No, I don't carry a laptop I have I'm in my office and I have a laptop at home and I have one here. So that's not I work out before I get here. I'm not carrying like a giant bag. Where do you work out? I have multiple. I have like I've just started doing weights.

31:34So now I have a trainer. I go to her gym. I go to Pilates. I go to yoga. It's all about strength training right now. Yeah, they've really they've really finally gotten chicks to lift weights. It's been 10 years of telling you you have to. Are you taking creatine? Yeah. Obviously. Yeah. What do you think happened? Because like for my whole entire life, every woman I know is afraid of looking like too jacked and having like their shoulders be too big. Yeah. And then like two years ago, because of like the protein maxing situation and then the Reda True Tide that's, you know, sucking our muscle mass away.

32:13Do you think that's what happened? or like is there something that made you want to start pumping some iron? Honestly, my doctor was like, you need to stop doing Pilates and yoga and start lifting weights. You're a woman of a certain age. Damn, your doctor said get your old ass to the weight room? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I'm very serious about doctors. I love a doctor and I want to live a long time. All right, Brian Johnson, what kind of protocol are we on? No, no, no. No, I'm like not. I don't do all those peptides and stuff people do. I just like. Just some of them. That's like a standard recommendation.

32:52You have to start lifting weights, right? Yeah. No, but the tide, the way the tide turned. So like Jason's saying, it was. I mean, I am scared of it. I don't want big muscles. I want to look like a string bean. I'm in fashion. Like, I don't want to look fit. I want to look emaciated and junky. Which Madonna arms do you want? Oh. um there is like honestly there was a a really good madonna phase that body phase yeah i think it was like um you know when she turned hippie and had the like the denim video that like i do remember that mondino shot that video that was a good body phase ray of light hippie madonna arms Yeah, Ray of Light was a good look.

33:42I feel like she was doing yoga with Eddie Stern. Those are Eddie's shoulders, aren't they? Right? A few of my friends train with her baby daddy, though. Like, that guy's around. What's the guy's name? Oh, he's hot. Yeah, he's hot. And he trains people. I'm loosely on. But he does, like, 30-minute sessions, which is so fire. Like, he's charging the same price for an hour, but it's 30 minutes, which is just, like, that's the hot tax. Maybe I need to do that. 30 is all you need, Kate. It is all you need. I love that. But I hear about Madonna arms, but I also famously remember Aniston arms was a big.

34:17Jennifer Aniston had an arm phase that was iconic as well. I feel like she always does. She's kind of jacked. She's kind of jacked. It feels a little bit natural to some extent because I feel like she's always kind of look like that. I feel like she works out a lot. Definitely, definitely, definitely. That's what she's into. You know, like people who don't work out because their doctor told them to, they work out because they like it. Yeah, I'm one of those people for sure. There are people like that. Or they work out because if they don't, they'll jump off of a cliff with a gun in their mouth kind of thing.

34:47Isn't she marrying a hypnotist? That feels like, I mean, cry for help. Wait, what? I didn't know that. Jennifer Aniston's marrying a hypnotist? Isn't her boyfriend like a hypnotist? Look it up, Jason. I'm almost positive that her boyfriend's a hypnotist. He's hot. He's a good looking civilian. but like things are moving fast from what i hear and i believe he's a hypnotist jennifer aniston's hypnotist boyfriend jim curtis brings stability and peace to her life can you imagine just read the daily mail every morning chris does yeah he's he's kind of a silver zaddy he's a silver zaddy i read the daily mail i i actually had a discussion with uh our mutual friend sarah moonvez about i was like who pays for the daily mail premium and she was like i do and I was like wow that's amazing because it's so worth it giving in to your darker angels or something well as they say it ain't tricking if you got it you know it's like three dollars too it's like it's not some it's like not a big commitment it's just like less than a sub stack it's way less than a sub stack and you don't you basically you get to the most salacious headlines daily mail plus they're paywalled you know they know what they're doing you know taylor swift's getting divorced or whatever you're paying 3.99 a month for that you ain't gonna read that we've already talked about this chris is already getting this for christmas this year it's the perfect gift you know what i mean that's a great christmas gift because it's not you'd feel like a fool paying for it but if you received it for free you're gonna look right like all the all the great gifts i just i'm sure i like to follow jennifer annison's love life because she's such a legendary stick woman and her ending up with a like silver fox hypnotist life coach feels sort of like the final frontier it feels like what you she had nowhere else to go and that's kind of beautiful to me she's done it all i like her i hope she's happy we hope jenny's that's kind of that's kind of how that's how america that's how america feels though that's what i'm trying to say like everybody wants her to be happy totally i was begging her manager when trump won to please have jennifer and brad get back together fake just for america so so you you think that just to cheer us all up because that's like we're so like we're so we need that because they they made us happy as a culture to reverse reverse the the polarity of the world that trump brought down yeah like you know how like i don't know who your affinity is for but i'm a new yorker like when the nicks won it didn't matter that the world was in crisis like we were just happy and i feel like if Jen and Brad got back together.

37:22They're like, it's okay that that woman who was stabbing people in Times Square got shot in broad daylight because we got Zoron and the Nixon Five, baby. And same thing for me when And Just Like That was on every week. It doesn't matter what's going on. The fires in California. I don't give a shit. Evacuate this. I don't give a fuck. Jason lost 100 acres, but he was on the couch watching And Just Like Us with a smile on his face. He doesn't give a shit. And that's part of my rule of three of ladies arms because Sarah Jessica Parker also great arms she had some good arm years didn't she and it's on the mind because I know that you have some sort of devil wears Prada you know you're sort of in the convo because of your history with you know the people who it's based on in real life I'm not the bad mean lady that everybody seems you're not the bad mean lady but you were Wintour's assistant at some point You were at Runway Magazine at one point, but two days ago I was watching Devil Wears Prada 2 on the plane, and I was like, this is such a better movie than Sex and the City 2.

38:26Would you agree or disagree? I didn't watch Sex and the City 2. How many flights have you been on and been able to avoid that? That's unbelievable. I don't watch the provided entertainment. I like download. I travel with an iPad, and I download whole shows. like i always feel like um people talk about shows and i miss them because i'm not a big tv watcher at night and i don't download like two full series and i like to watch a whole series on a flight and if i don't like it i go to the next one i've done that i i've done that too i mean that's the best way to kill eight hours i've done that too i don't watch the provided entertainment as well but sex in the city too how could i resist i love the middle east it's it's the best plane movie of all time god damn it it's so good crazy rich asians is my favorite plane movie i will always select that like food and shopping and pretty people and travel i prefer the book but i think the visuals do add a lot to the story yeah i if you're if you're 30 000 feet and like one and a half glasses of wine in and just like the opening scene where where the rude hotel person denies them and then she turns around and says, oh, I actually own the hotel.

39:42Try to not pull a Kleenex out and wipe the tears away five minutes into the fucking movie, right? Good fucking luck. Good fucking luck. And we're not even Asian. This happened to me recently. TV is such a, like I was at this ranch in Colorado over the weekend and with people who like basically live off the grid and the woman who picked us up from the airport was like yeah i bought a plot of land out here like i'm building a homestead like that kind of person and i was talking to her and she was like well i love love is blind and i was like wow i cannot believe that i am relating to a like a person who fishes for a living about the power of tv is is it knows no bounds that's what people relate on the most it blew it blew my fucking mind i would say you're not off the grid if you watch love is blind i think that's the thing i mean sure you have the internet i guess but you know what i mean it was it was a shocking revelation that it made me download all of love is the new season and watch it you know on the plane that's that's i prefer the book but yeah exactly yeah they get married at the end well i mean kate it depends if they make it or not i mean is is is love blind is the kind of the big question you know so they i watched it during covid they make it down the aisle they they get to the aisle if they get that far and then they sometimes they'll be at the altar and the vibe is like no actually i can't do this you know like you you sounded a lot less fat over the phone so no they already they already they already know if the person is fat so they've got and then they've lived together for a couple weeks or whatever and then it's like are you too fat to marry you know what i'm saying it's a different it's a different question you give them two weeks do they make them do they force them to kiss or anything like that are they able to sort of interact on their own most of them most of them have intercourse depending on their comfortability with cameras you know what i mean it's not it's not as old school as like real world would you throw your boxers over the camera in the corner and kind of get to it so it's a little they got cameras that you can't throw boxers over well these people are just like these people are literally like i'm an it guy from denver like and i'm not this is not i don't know they're not like they're people that want to be on tv but they're not the same kind of people that want to be on tv if that makes sense it feels like it feels more genuine in some ways yeah it's more innocent we're gonna run out of those people pretty soon i feel like i've kate did you have you have you not been approached for reality tv i'm shocked that you haven't had a zoe project of your own i have but i don't have any interest what what real housewives of new york or something more fashion-based oh my god are you kidding wow you just went from i don't have any interest to christmas morning as a child andy call me i will do it right now fuck jenna lions is me oh my god um no like when rachel had her show i definitely got offered a bunch of shows and i i mean there was a time my agent kept making me do these meetings with this production company who really wanted to do a show and i was like how about we do it more like pbs style where i take you to see like the best embroidery house in france and like take you to see like the italian shoemaker and then they never made me meet with them again so your idea you said you went into the reality tv office and said what if it was more pbs and you're saying this was a purpose you did this on purpose to sabotage it i mean i had two agendas one was like that's the kind of tv i would be interested in participating in and two yeah i didn't want them to ask me to come back again and have my whole team trying to convince me to do it you should have done it why not maybe now you know it's a slippery slope yeah so i'm i don't have twitter and never have for a reason because i don't i'm very inappropriate like i'm not i i don't say the right things all the time well kate that's why they wanted you to do that's what it requires to do reality tv you have to be an alcoholic or a loud mouth or preferably both.

43:51That's why they were calling you. Yeah, they liked your... Because you have the gift of not being able to self-govern your own words. 45:20No, I'm really self-aware. Like, I know what I mean. That's what you think. That's what you think until you start podcasting. That's what you think until you start podcasting. This shit gets wild. Yeah, this ain't no Lauren Sherman shit. We're going to get you to say something. You know what I mean? Yeah, this ain't fashion people. This is different. We do a different round here. Okay. No, I think that I know what you mean. I think we're at that point, too, where we sort of we know what to say and not to say to the to the right people. That's that's part of the job, whatever the job is. And I'm not a kid.

45:49Like, I'm not trying to get famous off of this. You know, like when you see the people on on Love Island, like this is their shop. They need to get famous. Like I have a job that isn't dependent on me being famous. yeah but i don't want to be famous so law roach has a job and and and rachel zoe has a job but they also had a part where you know they not necessarily they wanted to make it all about themselves and not about their work but you know a little little bit of both right you you never felt pressure or were you more like i want to let my work speak for myself i just think i'm very different yeah yeah i think that both of those people are very like their personalities and they were interested in fame they both were from the very beginning and they used styling to like launch you know careers as as talking heads and cultural face of culture right and that's never been my angle right like i'd much rather like design collaborations that's fun for me i like designing stuff on the side i didn't go to school for it so like i don't really want to launch my own brand i don't think i i like the idea of making stuff where like a whole team can produce it and execute it and sell it um like there are there are different things i'm interested in that styling is a launch pad for than just getting famous yeah i i like i'm like super private i really struggle with instagram because like i don't want people to know what my real life is sure and my husband would probably leave me if i had a reality show like he's cool right right you know i mean we're from like a generation where saying look at me is like yeah that's that's actually true thing you could possibly say yeah i mean that's yeah that's a good point i mean chris and i we're we're a little younger and we sort of are on that we're on the fence with that and i i often feel the same way and i don't i don't always want to always be posting shit on instagram even though it's unfortunately the only way to make a living nowadays unless you're working in the minds you know yeah i read i'm trying to think the name of the woman who wrote it do you read that book hunger makes me a modern girl i think it's this later kinney girl wrote it oh yes she did it was such a it was such a good um like description of gen x values and like i don't think people under like 40 even can conceive of like how shameful selling out was oh yeah we've we've talked about we've talked about this a lot it's crazy yeah it's crazy because now trying is like yeah i mean all people do is try like desperately in front of the camera And what we consider selling out, they consider proof of talent.

48:41Like when a young actress gets a Dior contract, she's like proof that I've made it, proof that I'm important. Where like even when I started my career styling, my clients, when they got these big deals, which are so coveted now, would be like, is anyone going to take me seriously? Yeah. And it started. I mean, that is. that's it's only in japan no one's gonna know about it that kind of thing and now yeah like you said it's it is the that is your validation that is your stamp of approval that you have made it because givenchy thinks you're gonna sell perfume for them at an airport i mean it's it's a i mean you got to make money i think that's what it really is it's like i think people are like you dangle that kind of money it's either that or do you want a real job no i don't want a real job so let's do the photo shoot for my new fucking watch i would say that stuff bothers me less than the the brand like the all right we're caa we're packaging up we got this actor what are you interested in you like what do you like you like fucking pinwheels you like gummies you like what do you like we're gonna make one and we're gonna sell it that to me feels more disingenuous than like i'm a hot actress and i'm walking red carpets constantly and a brand is going to pay me to whether that's sort of that feels at least like it makes sense i agree with like hey zach zach galifianakis you like gardening we're gonna give you a gardening show on netflix but i would say we're back to jennifer aniston because that is the og of brand deals because she owns part of vital vital protein she owned smart water till they sold it like she's oh she owned living proof the hair care like everything she endorses she takes ownership in it and then they sell it and she makes a fortune yeah no that's that that's and she's quiet i mean she was in smart order ads of course but it's like kind of quiet like you know that and we know that but it's not some it's not a huge thing but you have to be already huge in order to negotiate equity deals with these brands because if if i try that now they'll just laugh at me they'll say you're gonna get this 15 000 and shut the fuck up and i'm like what about all All I can ever think about is Glenn Powell's sauce brand and how successful it is and how dumb it makes me feel that Glenn Powell's barbecue sauce has produced more income for him than I will make in my lifetime.

51:04Never seen it on a shelf anywhere in my life. Never seen anyone eat it. Never met a person in my entire life who has tried it. If I see one more person talk about fucking the Kardashian flat tummy gummies, it's like this shit. Some of this shit works. It's crazy. It's like some of this shit actually works. Chloe's popcorn got me fucking jacked. Okay. That has so much good protein in it. It just, it feels so manufactured in a conference room. Whereas at least like whatever, you know what I mean? Kristen Stewart wearing Chanel feels like real to me. At least like there feels like some, there's some, there's a reason this is happening.

51:38I guess is what I'm trying to say. I agree. That's because she's hot. She is hot. Do you use AI to make mood boards now? No. Are you sick of making mood boards? No, I love Pinterest. She doesn't do that, bro. She's got four people in that office right now. I don't know. I was an assistant for almost a decade. Don't lie. There's two people in this office. I'll show you.

Read the full transcript

52:03You said, bitch, I'll turn the camera around. Don't make me rotate this line. I love Pinterest so much. And I love making mood boards. But I am consistently disappointed by AI. I feel like AI is like asking a fifth grader for answers. They're like sort of right and like not insightful. Or I don't know if it's because I don't know. Like if you ask it for a recommendation when you're traveling, the recommendation is obvious. If you ask it for, if you ask it for like, I don't, I just find that the answer is very basic. And the tiny subtleties of photos, there's no way AI can do that yet. Yeah, I mean, I guess maybe not so much with the image selection itself, but maybe for just like the layout process of it or something like that.

52:54Oh, no, my assistants do that. Okay. Maybe they use AI. I just think when you, if I see an AI deck, I can tell and it's shitty. Yeah, for sure. Like you can just tell. And maybe it's because I've looked at so many decks in my life. I did a job this summer. I did a job where the reference for fashion was so bizarre and we were like what is this what is this outfit it was it was a like a gown made into a jacket with pants underneath I mean like like um it had all the clothes like a video game outfit yeah and we like reverse Google searched it like did this ever exist and it did not and the only place you could find something sort of similar was in like witch clothing on Etsy and they were not searching witch clothing Etsy no well my wife is also a stylist and she said that she'll she'll make a make a deck make a mood board send it over and they're like this is cool but what if it was a little more like this and then they'll send over an image of clothing that does not exist in the real world and she'll say that's a great ai image of like what you said uh you know a basketball jersey with coattails that that are rainbow sparkles that connect to a pair of converse all stars with dreadlocks yeah but i can't go on the real real and buy that for you for the shoot tomorrow right and like there might not be a head hole you know like it's not clothing clothing has to work yeah you got you got to be able to put it on technically technically you have to close you have to be able to put on yeah that's really funny did you did you did you mention this to anyone or is this just fun between you and your people oh no like i i'm a i'm like a people pleaser at work so i was like trying to find this and then i was like this is ridiculous and i had a call with the client and i was like can we talk about this image and this thing that you want me to get because it's not real and they were like oh yeah yeah something sort of like that and i was like could i propose this option and they were like oh yes that makes more so they didn't they didn't necessarily admit they didn't necessarily admit wrongdoing but they said that it was more of a reference they were trying to save time they had two different shots and they wanted one outfit that would convert into another and i think that's what like without having to take somebody off set and change them and do a whole thing so they were they were just trying to streamline the process which if you are a fashion stylist there's many ways to do that you can just take something off that's covering something else right i think they call that layering i've read about that yeah so i've heard about layering a lot lately like it was very logical how they came to that outfit and once they explained how they came there i was like got it okay so this is what we can do and they were like yes that's great but when you have non-fashion people they're like look we live in san francisco and you're like oh got it okay so here's what we're gonna yeah like they're just like they're like non-fashion people who are like working in production trying to you know just like streamline things let me guess though the check did clear oh yeah and it all worked out and it looked cool so it's fine but they're like that was the biggest instance of ai it's really funny to be like this this garment doesn't exist this is not real clothes that's often what i say when i look at people and how they dress i'm like what is that garment what is like where did i often look at people and i think where did you find that and what would you call it you know like i'm always shocked at what people wear it's it every day walking around new york my mind is blown by some sort of unnecessary innovation that has been made by like an nyu you know sophomore yeah did you see that article about you know how gen z just the ugly fashion yeah yeah yeah yeah of course i mean my whole i woke up i'm on i have this fashion group text where we have we all met in new york but we've all dispersed there's like people in asia and people in california and people in new york and it was like 25 messages deep when i woke up in new york on that article what's the name of this group chat on your phone it's called is that twiggy because um two of us were at a gagosian opening for avidon and somebody said is that twiggy and it was it was not it was um oh god no i'm just as bad it was another model from the 60s and it just like killed me and i was laughing so hard that i change the group text is that twiggy every every group chat like that always has a fun name like that i thought maybe you had like reworked the meaning of the word twiggy but not just not you know what i mean like is it is it twiggy meant something more than was it the model twiggy that's what i was hoping for no but it was not the model twiggy and that's hilarious to the group because that person really should have known sure how many how many people are in this group Six That's a lot of people That's an intimate group of divas No, three is the max Is it women only or is there one gay guy?

58:24I'm the only woman Oh, twist, it's all gay guys? Wow Jason, that's a great question I wasn't expecting it to be all gay guys I thought it might be a 50-50 at least Do you get discriminated against? I don't think so maybe there's probably an offline where you think all these you think the guys would have a they would talk about you you don't talk about them oh we have break off yeah there's a five-person group chat called that is twiggy where they just talk about you

59:02that's what i was asking that's what i meant do you think they do you think all five of them get together and like oh this bitch again here we go that's what i was hoping yeah probably okay Yeah, because I feel like there needs to be, you know, I'm not a gendery person, but, you know, when it's just women only or just men only or just thems only, it's nice to have that, you know, where you're able to speak freely amongst your own. Do you agree with that? Yes. Locker room talk, you know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, my lady group texts are much different because we all have kids and talk about that stuff.

59:36That's where we share penis photos? Totally. Totally. that's so crazy it'll it never ceases to amaze me because i would never send a photo of my wife's vagina to any of my friends you know what i mean

59:54dude you're a good guy and i i think people need to know that you're like i feel like i have not dated a woman in my entire life where they didn't send all of their friends a photo of my penis you know what i mean it's just like a prerequisite it's like well are you being serious or is this an extended bit. No, I'm being serious. No, no, this is definitely real. This is definitely real. Seriously? You guys are dogs. Women are hell. I would never do that. You've been out of the game too long. I would never do that. I've been married for 21 years. If not a photo, but just like, you know, how was first, you know, we hooked up last night.

1:00:28Tell me about the penis, you know? Good penis, bad penis. And not like, was the dick good? Not yet. Not was the dick good? Like, details. Like, is there a mole so I can identify him if he dies? Like, that kind of thing.

1:00:46Gorbachev dick you know something like that okay so I was when I was researching you there's a we have some through lines you're you're a stylist my wife's a stylist I I am a dj you married a dj you styled Dakota Johnson my wife styles role model are there any similarities that you've noticed between your husband and I

1:01:11a penis to brag about um and i swear on my life i was not making a penis reference that was just just a quick follow-up it was just tell me about your husband's dick it was just a quick follow-up uh he has tattoos and like white t-shirts i don't know you well okay i just thought it was like wow there's a few there's a few little you know coincidences there i mean i imagine you have good shoes and lots of records in your apartment no i had a lot of records probably live in a similar way those are gone shoes are okay not great he's more of a digital files guy records yeah i'm yeah i'm uh i every nobody dj's off of vinyl anymore unfortunately except for nerds you know white guys like your husband no i mean he hasn't dj'd in a million years but he's a record collector yeah who's got more shit he's a discogs guy you or him probably he's got more shit god I mean, he has a record store, but he also...

1:02:07Oh, he has more records. The records are a prominent feature in everywhere we live and dealing with the records. It's obscene. So you got him in the city and upstate. Yeah, and his office. And then he has a record store downstairs from his office in Brooklyn. I mean, I'm glad that he held on to them because there was definitely a lull in the market for a long time. And now it's really pumping. and all that vinyl is your retirement fund. That's what he says. And I'm like, in what world? Who am I selling it to? I don't think that record collection, it's just, it's too cumbersome. It's too much. It's too much.

1:02:47I just don't, I don't know. I guess I'm that way about books, but something about records, it just seems like such a, I don't know, like a real hole if you have to move or do anything. It is. And we do, I like to move. I like to flip real estate. so we don't move that often but like moving records is a whole thing because they can't get hot they can't get cold they're very heavy you can't lay them down sideways you gotta be careful he has to pack them himself i mean the whole thing is unbelievably annoying the marriage of a record collector and a house flipper that those two things are at odds with each other i say we get jennifer aniston's hypnotist to hypnotize your man into selling his vinyl collection good idea Without experiencing like terrible depression.

1:03:36Yeah. Without, well, you know, take that money. And is there a vintage car that he's been thinking about getting for a long time? No. All he cares about is records. Like old band t-shirts. In the scheme of things, as far as husband stuff goes, you lucked out. Like this could be, you know what I mean? This guy could be collecting vintage beer signs and pool tables and shit. Like you're better. You're much better off. You're much better off. Totally. Or fashion. That would annoy me. Well, he would be gay then. And that would be weird if he was married to you. Yeah, you would be dating the first opium husband.

1:04:11Oh my God. Or like watch collecting would annoy me too, I think, just because it's so expensive. I'd be like, come on. Yeah. It's pricey. It's a little fruity. It's a little fruity. It's also pricey. But I think that feels like there is a big upside on that market selling wise. but if you're a collector you're not selling that much you're usually just buying that's the problem with collecting yeah because he ain't selling shit is he no never yeah i've never i have a pretty wild collection of band t-shirts i've never sold one in my life i there's i don't care if i've never looked at it in the closet i'm never going to sell it that's just not part of the same we have like many many of those giant tupperwares full of band t-shirts that he doesn't wear anymore that he's saving for the children who don't want them they're like dad i don't i don't like spoon that shit sucks get out of here with that shit it's like all heavy metal stuff what size what size is he really he's like what size is he in vintage t-shirts usually a large he's like six three six two six three like slim yeah i'm muscly i go more xl just because i like the fit but i was hoping you would say xl we could do a little we could do a little meet and greet you know what i mean again he would be depressed and kill me i was i mean a big thing in that world is guys posting like these accounts i follow that have the most wild knee shit always post things that aren't for sale and then of course if you dm them and offer them a price they will sell it to you which is sort of like this it's it's a real cat and mouse game that i don't really understand But I guess it creates a demand.

1:05:51I like it. They do that with fashion as well. Like, oh, this is just my archival, Rick. Not for sale. Unless. Yeah, everything's for sale. Everything's for sale. Unless you zell me 7800. Okay, my friend. Well, I have to go hit the sauna and then go have a beautiful dinner. So we have to end this now, Kate. But I hope you had fun chatting with us. We appreciate you taking the time. Thanks for having me. Yeah, what a pleasure. Thanks. I'm glad this worked out. Also, at the beginning, Chris said, when you met him, you told him, I know you. No, I said, I know who you are because you went to introduce yourself to me like I didn't know who you were.

1:06:31Well, I was just. Well, no, you had a tone of voice. I recently admired your apartment in what was it? Financial Times. Oh, well, thank you. I thought it was more of like I thought it was more like I said something that you didn't like and you heard about it. That's what I was a little concerned with, with your tone. That's why I don't have a reality show. because I say things like that. It's like my nature to try and antagonize and make myself more interesting. It worked. My interest was peaked. Birds of a feather. You're here now. You're here now. Shit, it worked. Welcome to the flock. Welcome.

1:07:04All right. Thank you. Yeah, if you ever want to have a podcast, just let me know. Your son can produce it with Ableton Live. Yeah, it's easy. This is your new path forward. Fuck YouTube. That takes a lot of time. I'll be your advisor. All right. Well, thank you. Okay, we'll see you soon. Thank you for having me. Yeah, of course. Later. Bye.

1:07:42I don't think I can be your friend, Isabella said. Rebecca's stomach flipped. This is the love story of real hinge couple Isabella and Rebecca, written and read by me, Temi Denton-Hurst. Listen to the free audiobook now.
